Why were Aussies so defensive?

We all know how was the pitch behaving.. We all know how was Indians bowling at that time, we all know there were only 3 spec. bowlers.. Considering all these points, Watson played for his century and forgot team's casue...

Even if we hadn't got Hussey and North relatively late in the day - that would have had the Aussies just 3 down - they still probably wouldn't be in an utterly dominant position due to their pedestrian style after lunch. For a team only 3 down that's poor cricket.

Just 70 runs off the last 48 overs? WTF, even if you leave every ball to the wicket-keeper, you're bound to get more runs through byes alone. Heck, if Kamran Akmal was keeping on that pitch, Australia would have scored 200 runs with 'well-left's alone. That is some pretty impressive stonewalling right there. One of the things that the Aussies often boast about is how they elevated test cricket by scoring as fast as they do (3, 3.5 RPO).. Looks like they forgot the elevation part and stuck to the flat-plane part.

Someone on cricinfo pointed out today that no one barring Punter has scored a double ton in this Aussie line up. These guys are not what Australia used to be. They have lost too many recently and they are falling down the rankings too fast. That Australia team is long gone, what remains is a shadow.

They scored 17 runs in 40 overs. What a relevant comment.

Was it that difficult to score or... In my opinion, it were the Aussies who handed over the game in our court clearly.Maidens after maidens, started building pressure once Ponting was out.Indian spinners were allowed to settle, whatever they bowled, was handled with a straight forward defence, whereas they could have easily rocked back on the back foot and nudged it behind square in the leg side for an easy single, which they didn't.Also, the running between the wickets wasn't at its best, easy threes were limited to twos and so on.Nothing to take away from the Indians though, they bowled a tight line, but singles were always on, and available if Aussie wanted What do you have to say guys.Did India bowl that well, or Aussie batted ordinarily ?

India bowled well. On a dead pitch with no bounce, no pace, no carry, getting 5 wickets for 200 odd is a commendable effort.

^ I agree that they bowled well.But they were allowed to bowl well, no positive intent from the Aussies as they were happy to sit back and defend a good length ball, which with a lil more positive intent could have made our bowlers look ordinary.
