ViruRulez Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 I was just watching a discovery documentary on Turkey and they said that nearly 25 crore turkeys are produced annually in US which is nearly the same number as the number of US citizens. They are also mentioning that it is more healthy with lesser fat, more proteins and less cholesterol compared to even chicken. This made me think of a question. In India, we already have lesser variety of nutritious meat mainly because beef and pork are not very open and spread out in most places here due to religious issues of the conservatives. Chicken is the primary victim of the huge meat-eating appetite of this nation. :giggle: And there is not enough nutritious meat left left for the whole nation as production of meat/chicken is not upto the demand. So, why have we not adopted turkey farming as a substitute to all the kinds of meat currently prevailing in India. Turkey wont have any problem with any religion at all too and at the same time, we dont need to go to extreme of snake or octopus eating etc. like in China. Some questions in this regard: 1) How does turkey meat taste? (I have never eaten it and hence asking) 2) Is there any specific conditions for farming turkey? If so what are they and why can they not be farmed in India? 3) Is there climate factors too. I dont think that might be a case as turkey is farmed in Latin America, Iran, Israel etc. which have somewhat similar climate to India? For any confusion I am saying about the domestic turkey bird http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_turkey
punjabi_khota Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 turkey meat is like chicken, only leaner, less tastier and drier
Clarke Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Have you seen this ? Far more efficient to farm, less fat and good amount of protein and iron :P http://discovermagazine.com/2008/may/07-want-to-help-the-environment-eat-insects/article_view?b_start:int=0&-C=
ViruRulez Posted October 27, 2010 Author Posted October 27, 2010 turkey meat is like chicken' date=' only leaner, less tastier and drier [/quote'] If it is somewhat like chicken and as mentioned more proteinous and less fat and cholesterol than chicken then why can it not be a good source of meat especially for the poor people. The documentary mentions that a modern domestic turkey grows to more than 20 kg in just 20 weeks. So, that would mean each turkey would produce a lot more meat too compared to a chicken. So, the price of one kg of turkey can be kept at say one third of the price of chicken which would make it quite affordable to the poor too and would be a great source of protein for them. Maybe it might not be tastier than chicken, beef, pork or goat but if it is healthier and more nutritious then why should it not be adopted. In fact, why has it not been adopted till now in India. Are there any special conditions for farming of turkeys which is not available in India maybe. :hmmm: Have you seen this ? Far more efficient to farm, less fat and good amount of protein and iron :P http://discovermagazine.com/2008/may/07-want-to-help-the-environment-eat-insects/article_view?b_start:int=0&-C= I rejected all these ideas in the first post itself when I mentioned we need not go to extremes like in China and eat snakes and octopus. :winky:

ViruRulez Posted October 27, 2010 Author Posted October 27, 2010 alternative to meat? didn't know turkey was vegetarian. :giggle: btw, do people make/sell Tandoori Turkeys? Wonder how that tastes like when compared to Tandoori Chicken. :hmmm: I mean alternative to Indian sources of meat which is mainly chicken with somewhat pork, beef and goat and very less extent pigeons etc. Sorry for the confusion. :P Chick rocks.:nice: Chicks obviously rock. Who does not like hot chicks. :P turkey sucks.i avoid it like the plague.its not palatable to indian tastes. As I mentioned it might not taste that great but for the crores of India's poor suffering from malnutrition due to food and meat prices and unavailability is it still not a good source of protein and nutritious meat. If it can be sold at say one third the price of chicken for example say Rs. 30 a kg then what is the harm. This brings me to another question. How much is the cost of turkey per kg in the US and what is its price compared to chicken. Secondly, if it is that bad then how come 25 crore turkeys are eaten in the US every year as their palatial senses might not be lower than India's poor. Not only in US but in many other countries all over the world too turkey is quite popular. So, if it is nearly inedible then why would it spread to so many countries across the world.
Guest Gunner Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Turkey is useful as a grilled meat. It won't work if you want to make curry etc. It tastes exactly like PK mentioned above. In Europe the price is about the same as chicken no great difference.

Got it. It means that tandoori turkey would be better than turkey curry :giggle: Just saw that turkey farming has already started in India and found a link while searching the web regarding the same. http://www.cpdosrbng.kar.nic.in/TURKEY%20FARMING%20GUIDE.pdf Which gave rise to an interesting business idea for me. :P We have 2.5 acres + of village farm land as part of dad's share of ancestral property and that is almost not used up at all and only lent to some relative to continue his farming for a few thousand rupees a year. So, I thought of starting the business too but dad said that this is India and the farms get inundated by floods every year and is nearly useless for poultry. So, I had to drop the idea. :giggle: Anyways hope that it is promote a lot more and it might be a good solution at least for nutrition of the poor people if it can be sold at a cheap price compared to other forms of meat.
Dravid Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 any food out there that u dont love, smokey? :hahaha:

Best one I had was Turkey Biryani cooked in Chinese Style
Nova Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 I have eaten Turkey Kheema and Turkey Chilli. It tastes delicious. If done rightly, turkey goes well with gravies. :dontknow: Turkey breeding is potentially more viable than conventional poultry farming but the marketing takes a lot of convincing. It probably has more to do with tradition of how regional dishes are usually prepared than anything else. Our taste buds get accustomed and we develop memories with what we grew up eating. Taste of a particular dish is more ingrained in us in our formative years. What if you just ate turkey curries since your childhood? That then would become a delicacy! An alternative thought here. It would be interesting to see the results of blind tasting done by people who have never eaten either a chicken or turkey curry before. In Singapore, I had this Asian dish of squid and sea cucumbers. It was enthusiastically being eaten by others while it was bland for me and I couldn't even finish it. Yeah so breaking those shackles between "taste developed through tradition" and "acquired taste" can be tough. No wonder some of my Amreeki friends have a negative reaction to Pani Puri... for them it is yuck, while I am in seventh heaven.
Texy Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 turkey tastes so bland though....very healthy alternative though...... indian thanksgiving :woot:
