Sreeshant versus Ishant

It was pretty funny watching Sree bowl today. He bowled two good overs and all of a sudden started mouthing off to Taylor and acting as if he was a dominating bowler. The next Sree over Taylor pretty much took him on, shut him up by hitting a couple of boundaries and Sree started bowling a bit more short rather than the fuller deliveries that were moving off the pitch. Dhoni took him off after that over. So much for Sree bowling at least one good long spell.
You really need to quit making up things when discussing Sreesanth. Taylor hoicked one to mid wicket from off/slightly outside off stump against the swing, played a backfoot punch for four, edged one to Dhoni while trying to hoick another one which fell short. Not sure how this is shutting someone up. Dhoni took him off because he said at the end of the match that in these conditions he likes to use the fast bowlers in 3-4, maybe 5 over spells. But yeah, what can be expected from someone who wants Nehra to play ahead of Sreesanth in tests despite not playing a FC match for 2 years, and breaking down after 10 overs the last time he attempted to play one.

Seesanth a lot better than just two wickets he got in this match if he bowls like this he should be fine in SA and it is nice to see Ishant get some wickets which will boost his confidence up. Both of them will be playing in SA so it is a mute point to compare them , on side note why is Sreesanth playing in odis, who cares about this odi series.

Hmm, so the Sree supporters have resorted to what the Pak fans call 'The Mohammad Sami is great" logic where Sami is supposed to have bowled amazing spells only to be be denied wickets because of bad luck plaguing him Sree was good no doubt, but in this match, considering the trouble we had in the last 2 dismissing even tailenders, Ishant>>>Sree

I wouldn't call it 'trouble'

Well the basic premise of this thread is irrelevant anyways for now. India don't have a home test scheduled for another 11 months. And away from home, both will feature in the line up. Now, if there is someone better than both of them, then it's a discussion worth having.

based on last test alone, noone is >>>> anyone else. See and Ishant are both erratic. both can be a hit or a disaster on any given day(rarely anything in between), disciplined bowling simply isn't there.

Ball to ball when I saw both IS and SS bowl in the Test, SS appeared to have been the more lethal on display and have put the batsman in a spot of bother and hurried them more. That said they both did good in their own way and IS has the wickets to show for which cannot always tell the true story. But instead of making it one versus the other I would want to see them bowl in tandem more often in Tests. That might really happen in the near future if they find a way to stay fit and also given the injury prone Zaheer who is over 32 now and may be out of it in 12-16 months especially if he plays ODI's and 20-20. So I see IS and SS as the first choice pair in Tests going forward in that conext.

I actually belive we will have an awesome attack in SA. The 3 of them ZK, Ishant and Sree will be handful for anyone. Zk is of course top class. Ishant has improved it seems and was very good in last test. And sree is a real talent, real wicket taker whose seam and movement will be effective. I am optimistic our pace attack will be potent in SA and England. And would say these 3 in tandemn is the best pace attack we have ever taken for a tour. Bench strenght is average but if these three stay fit, then saffies better be careful about producing pacers tracks

So what exactly did I make up? Sree did start mouthing off to Taylor, and Taylor did start to take him on and Sree then changed his length then was taken off.

Even Sami has his spells where he hurries the batsmen and put them in all sorts of bother without taking wickets. Doesnt count for much. It was the debutant who took a 5-fer. Its like a batsman looking good but not scoring even a 50

Omitted the fact that Sreesanth almost got Taylor in the over.

If you are hell bent on ignoring the qualitative aspects of their bowling and just want to talk about numbers, Sreesanth has a better average, wickets/match, and strike rate than Ishant. And the difference was quite substantial till before the previous test match. Point is that it is not very prudent to judge players solely on numbers, specially when both bowlers have had their moments of brilliance, their periods of being erratic, injury concerns, and inconsistencies. There has been very little to choose between them overall.

Out of curiosity, who would be your choice for being the back-up seamer to Zak, for tests in India?

If it is just an opinion you hold, there is no way for me to either prove or disprove it. But just to put things in perspective, even though Ishant took 7 wickets in this match, this not even close to his best bowling in Indian conditions. Just check his bowling out against South Africa in 2008 or against Australia later that year in India and you’ll know what I am talking about. He was making the opposition batsmen hop and jump with a lethal combination of pace, bounce and reverse swing in those series’. In fact, his absence due to injury in the first two test against South Africa was one of the primary reasons why we could only draw that series. For someone who’s still trying to hit his peak form, Ishant bowled really really well in this match. But Sreesanth does brings something invaluable to this side that few pacers can – He has this amazing ability to bowl some incredible wicket-taking deliveries on some really flat tracks. Plus, he is also one of those rare pacers whose intensity actually grows as the day progresses. Most pacers are at their peak in their first spell and their intensity flags after that, but oddly, Sreesanth’s intensity picks up after his first spell. In fact, most times, his best spells are those that come either in the post-lunch or post-tea session.

Agreed. But the thing with him is that those incredible wicket taking deliveries are far and few between and usually he's much more erratic than Ishant. Also, Sreesanth has always had some issues off the field that have'nt exactly helped his cause.

But Ishant seems to be really getting back into some good rhythm over the last few months. I was pretty impressed with some of his sporadically good spells in Sri Lanka, which were absolutely dreadful wickets for fast bowlers. To his credit, Sreesanth has also bowled some pretty impressive spells on these dead tracks. I wouldn't mind seeing either of them in the team.

There's a difference between omitting something and making something up like you said. Fine, Sree almost got Taylor out. Sree almost got A LOT of players out. I just wish he would work on getting people out as much as he works on his dance moves and verbals.

They both just SUCK!! Wudn't even make it to Australian or RSA "C" grade teams.. Both are lucky that we dont have a single 135+ bowler in India... Though I will take Ishant if I have to choose one kaana among lotsa andhaas.. Atleast the guy doesnt cry like a girl when slapped and act like one mid-pitch...
