Mark Taylor and Arjuna Ranatunga both genuine leaders .....One Indian captain who could have been Ganguly of 80s/90s is Ravi Shastri ( I never liked him but with hindsight he would have been much better bet than Azhar)

Ranatunga is underrated here as a captain-Credit where due,developed a team from being minnows into a world class side :hatsoff: Personally unlikeable-His attitude and just his overall presence was a disgrace to any athlete but can't knock out what he accomplished by the time he was done as a captain. Fleming is another guy who always kept Nzl competitive and a wonderful strategist Another guy who is vastly underrated is Darren Sammy-What he has done to WI cricket in the last few years is praiseworthy Overrated-Dhoni and Imran. Current lot has to be Clarke,makes test cricket entertaining in agood way :two_thumbs_up:

I was impressed by Martin Crowe, the way he lead NewZealand during WC 1992. Opening with Spinner, Sending Greatabtch as opening batsman were some of his innovative thoughts. Ravi Shastri, even though captained India only in one test and I guess 5-6 One Day was impressive.

The best captain I've ever seen is Brearley and closely followed by Mark Taylor. The rest I've seen: Lloyd, Imran included- are nowhere close to these two. Cronje came close but he was forever tainted. Of the current crop, its Clarke, easily but he is not in the same class as Brearley and Taylor.

Captaincy is overrated. Criket to progress should get rid of it. have couple of guys making decision with bowlers and coach making plans. Captaincy is all BS.

Among modern captains: Graeme Smith - leads from the front, whenever he got a hundred, SA drew or won the game. Again, he took over this burden at the age of 21 with only eight matches on his name and captained for 12 years. When he came into the SA side, it was in a crisis mode due to Hansie Cronje - he not only set right every thing there, but he went onto produce a world beating side for all conditions. Earlier era - Mark Taylor and of course Brearley who transformed the English side into a very formidable one, and brought out the best in his team members.

This is what I call Captaincy by committee and works fine compared to one guy making decisions like a dictator. I think you people were brilliant in the world cup. I was very impressed with the thinking planning and execution of SL.You just were better at all the levels. India OTH was stupid to let Dhoni make tactical decisions which was total BS. Dhoni should not be Indian captain in any format. Once again you guys were brilliant.

If that can be done quick enough then it is not a bad option. But letting one man make all the decisions like Dhobi did regarding selection of Yuvraj is stupid.

Smith took over in 2003, 3 years after the Cronje scandal. Shaun Pollock was the captain from 2000-2003 and did a fairly decent job. He lost his captaincy due to the run rate calculation blunder in 2003 WC.

I agree. New captains are innovative, have fresh ideas etc. But they get jaded after a while and continue with bad decisions and selections. Rotating captaincy between 3-4 senior players wouldn't be such a bad idea IMO.
