EnterTheVoid Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 I will be travelling a LOT in the upcoming months -- A LOT of time will be spent flying, in hotels, jetting to and from on - site locations and so on. I do have a laptop but I feel it won't be suitable for the work I will be doing. For one, its heavy. Secondly, battery life is non existent, goes dead in about 55 minutes. I am thinking of buying one of these ultra thin Apple MacBook Air' but I am not sure; I don't want to buy a *****y tablet. I've decided to buy a laptop and this macbook air seems to be the closest thing to what i need. Any advice ? :/

I will be travelling a lot (interstate for now, overseas later) and I need something that is light weight and has a long battery life. Re the job, I accepted their offer and I will be starting soon.
Holysmoke Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 I would recommend you to go for the macbook pro rather than the macbook air. I have the 13 inch macbook pro and its fantastic. Good battery life, thin, light, and powerful. (Not to mention it has all the ports, optical drive, etc) If you can.. wait till jan end when they will be refreshed and you'll see core i5 in them. Otherwise you'll have to pick up a core 2 duo right now.

I bought one last year and couldnt be happier its compact, easy to carry , gets the job done and the best part is they are cheap. If you are worried netbooks wont look professional enough then you could also look at vaio x series, little more firepower and have everything you need but over priced in my opinion.

I need a laptop with more processing capabilties than a netbook as I will be installing some heavy software and will be doing a bit of coding in C++ :woot: What happened to the defense option? The code is written in C++ There is no Microsoft Visual Studio for Mac OS X. If you go for an Apple laptop, you have to dual boot Windows or install Windows using Parallels/VMWare and then install Visual Studio in Windows.

Its light, well, as light a 17" laptop can be and very powerful. .You can obviously get the 14" model.The touchpad and keys are great too. A very good feature about this laptop is that you can disable battery charging when plugged in. I suppose that will save some battery life in the long run.
zen Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 From what I have read here, the Mac Air is definately not for you. You would also have to carry an external DVD/Blurray writer with you if you have to burn disc. The Macbook Pro seems like a good option in Mac. But if you are using mainly Windows based softwares then why go for Mac? Also for business use a Windows based laptop would be a better option. I know you can run Windows parallel to Mac on Mac but why split the hard drive unnecessarily? If your company is paying for the laptop then get the Thinkpad T series. The 14" model is pretty good for road use. If you really like something funky and don't mind 11" screen then Dell has Alienware laptop which has a good graphics card.

Lightweight ; I will be travelling a LOT and I will need to carry my laptop with me almost all the time. 2. Strong Battery Life ; Mobility is an ABSOLUTE MUST. I need a something that can give me a battery life of a good 3 - 5 hours. 3. Performance ; I need something with some serious grunt, I don't intend on using this to run heavy games or anything but it will need to run some heavy applications. Seems the Mac Book Air satisfies the first 2 but fails miserably in #3.
