jhakati Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 guys just look at Mahender singh dhoni, he already has a legacy with him. he has killed the best sides at their turf within 1-2 years of captaincy. he has created a team who every1 in the world will fear. while i accept ganguly was a successful captain but i don't think he can ever come close to what Dhoni has already achieved. people who talk about him being most successful captain should also know that he had lost most numbers of finals as an Indian captain. Dhoni is creating a dress room chemistry by skilled man-management but wat ganguly did was creating camps, he actually used shout at players, abuse them, Have anyone of you seen Dhoni doing this??? I know know it doesn't matter much now but ganguly ruined the career of Off-spinner Sunil Joshi. Ganguly has got just victories to his name but MSD has the victories along with EUPHORIA around the team. Under Ganguly team never threatened the No.1 position holders, now we are No.1. ru greg chappell's private chump? this is a joke, ganguly is the first ever indian captain to create team bonding, team spirit and an aggressive attitude not seen in indian teams of the past the term "team india" was formed under ganguly in the 2003 WC u moron ganguly was a legendary captain and without him dhoni would not be able achieve all that he has done as far as the better captain, dhoni is a great captain but not in ganguly's class just yet.
jhakati Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 No. Dravid didn't take. Ganguly bluntly told him that only way he could find a place in the side was by acting as a keeper. He made lot of terrible decisions on the field which are conveniently overlooked. India could have done lot better with that team. This was 2003 Test and ODI ranking of INdia http://icc-cricket.yahoo.net/match_zone/test_ranking.php?year=2003 lol and u conveniently forgot to put the 2004-2005 test ranking when india climbed from the no.6 to the no.3 position, thanks to the great performances under ganguly in australia and pakistan with our first ever test series win in pakistan. http://icc-cricket.yahoo.net/match_zone/test_ranking.php?year=2005
Andy Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Srinath' date=' Kumble, Harbhajan, Zaheer were his main bowlers. So yea. he had a better bowling line up.[/quote'] No Doubt Spinners were Better. But Zak wasnt half as Good What he is now. And for the Major part of Ganguly's Leadership Tenure Srinath wasnt available. Due to early Retirement from Tests IIRC.
fineleg Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Dhoni assigned a role of mentoring to Zak. Do you really think Ganguly did something like that. He was a big egomaniac who had lot of backroom controversies. His head was saved by some out of the world performances like 281 by Laxman' date=' 32 wickets in a series by Bhajji, Some outstanding knocks by Dravid (at one point he scored like 4 test centuries in a row), Some match winning spells by Kumble. He looked better because his predecessors sucked big time. His obsession with Parthiv patel cost INdia many games.[/quote'] This!
Andy Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 oh man those were the days in the 90s, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Dravid at their best and the holy trinity of Indian cricket. I think someone's signature here is Tendulkar - The Destroyer, Dravid - The Preserver, Ganguly - The Creator. And creator is exactly what Ganguly was. He took over in a period of extreme adversity and turmoil. We just lost 5 test matches straight against AUS and SA, match fixing. We needed a fresh start and a strong leader, and Ganguly goes on to go to the ICC Champions trophy. The players that are our match winners today -> Sehwag, Yuvraj, Bhajji, Zak, and Dhoni himself are all players that Ganguly handpicked and fought the board over.If you think the board is unreasonable now, they were a menace back then. Run by a bunch of senile old men who egs as big as the himalays. Ganguly created this team, Dravid nursed it along, and Dhoni's taking it to a new level. On a slightly different note, one of the things I'm proud about most is the lack of ego shown by our players over the years. At one point, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Dravid were all playing under each other's captaincy. But there was no revolt, no problems. These guys aren't only great cricketers, they're also great human beings. We're blessed that their Indian. Fantastic Post, Only if Indian Cricket Fans can Take the leaf out and not Resort to Comparisons between Batsmen Like SRT,RD,VVS,VS. And Leaders like Ganguly and MSD.
jusarrived Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Ganguly was very overrated as a captain .
jusarrived Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 What did we actually achieve under Ganguly ? one drawn series in Aus & a win in Pakistan ? WC finals , Natwest series ? lol
Andy Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 What did we actually achieve under Ganguly ? one drawn series in Aus & a win in Pakistan ? WC finals ' date=' Natwest series ? lol[/quote'] CT 2000 Final + CT 2002 Joint Winners. Only Team to Beat SA. And a drawn Series against the Best Side in the World in Their Den. Now what Special has Dhoni Achieved so Far that You are Laughing Out Loud on Gangu's achievements other than Underwear Cricket WC?
jusarrived Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 CT 2000 Final + CT 2002 Joint Winners. Only Team to Beat SA. And a drawn Series against the Best Side in the World in Their Den. how about losing to ozs at home after 40 years ? we dint even win one Major away series under him ...a team with Dravid , Tendulkar , VVS , Shewag , Kumble , Srinath wasnt good enough to beat even WI , NZ or even ZIM ? Considering the team we had , dont know how Ganguly is hailed as great captain .

And losing the series in WI Well Ganguly 'Transformed' The side, And it takes quite some time to transform a Team who never knew to win a Single test Outside India to A Side Which Started Winning Tests Outside India and Then to a Side who Started winings Series Outside India. It doesnt happen Over Night. He started Off in 2000 as a Captain But First Major Test Assignment started in 2001 from The Zimbabwe Tour. He couldnt win the Series, we drew it, Then Came SL in Late 2001, We won a Test Abroad against a Major Team But lost the Series. Then Came 2001 South Africa Series we Played 3 Tests But lost only one of Them. Then in 2002 We toured West Indies, even There we won one Game still Lost the Series. And all this Series we Had Srinath with us, But the Batting Line Up was not half as good as This, Not a single Good Opener, No Wicket Keeper half as Good as MSD. Till This he was not able to draw a Single Series abroad against Major teams, Yet managed to Win Few Test which our Past teams Couldnt. And i Doubt any Indian Team could have done Better without Good openers. Then Came the England Tour where Sehwag was tried as an Opener for the First Time and We drew the First Major Away series with a Win in England after So many Years. So after 1 and Half years we started performing Well and drawing series. It doesnt hapen overnight, You need to Givethe team some time to achieve the results. Now it would be interesting to note from here we hadnt had the Service of Srinath, Yet we manged to Drew series in England. Then Came the NZ tour where we were whitewashed, But then again we lacked a Support for Zaheer as the New Ball Bowler and the 3rd Seamer. Cant believe Sanjay Bangar was our 3rd seamer so many times those days . The We toured AUS and Drew against the Number 1 Side in the world despite not having an Opener Like Gambhir and a WK like MSD, Then we Toured Pak and Won the series. So its clearly Visible how he transformed the Side over the years and Improved them. Now about the 2004 Tour, he is being criticised for not wining or drawing at Home against Aus, Those were in the Late years of Gangu's Tenure, We can compare him with Dhoni and Call Ganguly Overrated, Less Effective Blah Blah, when he will need to start finding the Players to Fill up the Positions for SRT, Rahul, Laxman Etc . And only after ana.lysing the Leadership Tenure of both the captains e can Talk and Compare. Because Ganguly clearly dipped as a Leader in the later stage of his career, You never know that can happen with MSD too. Having said That, Ganguly sill have achievements in his side that makes him stand out as a Leader than MSD. MSD is yet to achieve that, This SA Series would be veery important in that regard.

maniac Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Ganguly inherited at a time of turmoil Matchfixing scandal ,Over dependance on one person i.e Sachin etc where as Dhoni inherited the captaincy when India was already a top team with already established greats.
virufan Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 He is better than Dada in one way that he is icecool. He does not throw tantrums on the field. Having said that, he inherited a great team from Dada who I think had nurtured. Dhoni is very very lucky. Who would have imagined Harbhajan saving the test against Newzealand twice by hitting centuries?

Blah Blah Blah :hysterical: Under19 Team Seriously? :hysterical: Firstly I mentioned in my posts before Dhoni has not achieved anything Special Which Gangu couldnt other than Underwear WC. 2ndly Dhoni is a better captain than Gangu in ODIs involving Bilateral Series. Havent i said that before too? But he goes missing in Big Tournaments. And Your 3rd point about 3 Loss and 14 Wins, His wins will increase too and so will his Losses. So lets not compare both of them Now. Cant we go without Comparing Batsmen like Tendulkar, Dravid, VVS and Leaders like MSD, Ganguly? Both have their own places in Indian Cricket history and did the best possible Job At That Momment. So If you still want to Compare compare him at the end of his Leadership Tenure, we all saw how Ganguly Faded out in his later half of Tenure as a Captain, It can very well be the same for MSD too. He is only in his 2nd Year and Ganguly Led us for 5 Years and hence we can scrutinise his achivements and Failure, Dhoni has done too Little to talk much about as Yet.
don_corleone840 Posted January 1, 2011 Author Posted January 1, 2011 Dhoni has done too Little to talk much about as Yet. hahaha can u tell me what is better than being no 1 in test cricket.
DomainK Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Dhoni has done too Little to talk much about as Yet. hahaha can u tell me what is better than being no 1 in test cricket. Nothing indeed. And he deserves full credit for that as the captain of the team. He has been innovative, full of positive energy, optimism and confidence that he infects others with. This Indian team, great as they all are, probably could not have managed to occupy the no1 position under another captain. But we dont need to call Gaguly bad in order to praise Dhoni, do we? Ganguly came in at a time of utter disaster immediately after the fixing controversy, the worst days in Indian cricket history, and did a great job of collecting the team and taking it a much stronger position. My objection is not to calling Dhoni a better captain, which IMO he is. My objection is to undermining Gnaguly's contributions in the past.
