vvvslaxman Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 If anything he has to sledge in a different way. By all accounts his sledgings are amaturish.
yoda Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Pah...that's ridiculous! What is "our culture" and "our way of winning"? Can you kindly elucidate? Our passive attitude during the 70's' date=' 80's, and 90's were very productive, weren't they? It took a Ganguly and his very vocal attitude to give us some moxie and we decided to build on it to much success. Fast-forward to the present- we have arm-chair experts who blackball such attitudes and feel the need to drag in "cultural sensibilities." So someone has some swagger and decides to strut his stuff and all of a sudden the masses of sheep collectively drag him down. Come to think of it- THAT pretty much sums up "our culture."[/quote'] So we are winning all of a sudden cause Sree can sledge? How about our top bats like RD, SRT, VVS and Sehwag who've pretty much carried the team during thess swagger years? Do they sledge too?
Late Cut Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Some people need to be an asshool to be effective. There is no point in trying to force them to be gentlemanly; Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, and numerous other athletes have outsized egos- it's what helps them be the best. It's pointless to ask them to be gentlemanly like a SRT, Dravid, or Lakshman.
Homerus_Unus Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 What I wanted to say is that you can still be aggressive without being cheap, by showing or saying cheap things, Agree, if some one says something abusive do not take it quietly, "jaise to taisa dena padega" you can also do this with your style of play also, i.e. determinded knock or hostile bowling, BTW, we were not that bad in the 80's when we won the world cup, world series cup, beat Aussies in Aus, and england in england. and who was leading cricketer then, Kapildev, he was aggressive but not cheap way. We don't have to be "chhichhora" to win, but, yes if some body starts it give them reply with due interest. Your "jaise to taisa dena padega" contradicts your stance against saying cheap things or using Tendulkar or VVS as examples to show how it's done. Neither of these players ever really responded to whatever verbal abuse was hurled towards them. Can't say if they had the right or wrong approach. They played the game the way it suited their effectiveness. As for the 80's- your information well-noted, but this was our record in the 1980's. Tests- 81 played- 11 won, 21 lost, 48 drawn, 1 tied. ODI- 155 played- 69 won, 80 lost, and 6 NR. Compare that to our record in the 2000's Tests- 103 played- 40 Won, 27 lost, and 36 drawn. ODI- 307 played- 161 Won, 130 lost, and 16 NR. Correct me if I'm wrong, but we won only ONE test series (against England in England) in the 1980's, including having to face the ignominy of giving the then minnows Sri Lanka (granted test status in 1981), their first ever test series win in 1985. You may think they were not "that bad" in the 1980's, but the losing record in both tests and ODI's, speaks for itself.

You don't read very well, do you? I am not claiming that Sreesanth's sledging skills are winning games. Each player in a team has to work to his own strengths. If being quiet makes SRT, VVS, etc. more effective, then so be it. If Bhajji's and Sreesanth's sledging makes them more effective, then so be it. You don't have to necessarily drag someone down and make this a "cultural issue" because someone's going against a popularly held norm. The concept of "our way of winning" and "not our culture" is bull-shite! That's what I intended to convey. Stop stooping to strawman arguments.
Homerus_Unus Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 to be fair he's calmed downed a lot. Q2Y97fKNqkE Personally, I thought that was hilarious. You need such characters in the sport to make things interesting. My only gripe against him is that, had he backed his attitude with an equally effective performance, people wouldn't be on his case today. His fault, really.
CG Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 dhoni is a pussy, remember how he once in a test went to sightscreen to jut make some adjustment for hayden.he has colonial hangover .
hari504504 Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 dhoni is a pussy' date='remember how he once in a test went to sightscreen to jut make some adjustment for hayden.he has colonial hangover .[/quote'] Wow ! really ??.:((.was he a captain then ? That is just bending over too much..I am sure Ganguly would've asked Hayden to get ****ed..

Neither of these players ever really responded to whatever verbal abuse was hurled towards them. Can't say if they had the right or wrong approach. You were the one who claimed that we were pussies in the 70s and 80s and that didn't get us anywhere thereby implying that this new found attitude/sledging has made a significant contribution to our winning ways. You talked about Sledging making guys like Sreesanth and Harby effective. While I can agree that may be the case when they are able to get under a player's skin with some verbal jabs thereby distracting them, how exactly does it make them perform better when they use foul language or give nasty send offs after a player has gotten out? How does that behavior make them perform better?

Well you motivate yourself before getting to a target, not after getting to it. I mean after taking a wicket, it is ok to celebrate success, high fives, whatever, how exactly is abusing the player who just got out motivating you to bowl better?

He just does his cute little dances that irritates the opposition :hysterical: Very infamously everyone brings up Symonds sendoff in some ODI. I don't see him abusing there :dontknow: And all this keeps him geed up for the next wikkit
Manny_Pacquiao Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 sree is to south afrika what harbhajan is to australia
