I guess by and large we would take 1-1 esp. after 1st test, but feel slightly down for we were the team with best chance of winning this match. Anyhow, Gambhir 7/10 :- Looked ugly. Was extremely lucky at times. But he has shown character yet again when needed. His play outside off stump needs some work Sehwag 2/10 :- A tour that he might want to forget. Dravid 4/10 :- Raises more doubts on his future. He hasn't been bad necessarily but one just gets the feeling that there is not much left in the tank. Tendulkar 10/10 :- No words. Just an honour to watch cricket in his era. Probably his top 5 100 of the decade. Laxman 10/10 :- We probably owe it to this man for 2nd test. The pitch was for the bowlers and this man yet again almost scored a 100 and put on some vital runs with the tail Raina/Pujara:- I won't be so hard on Pujara since this was his first tour and he probably looked more assured than Raina. Raina shouldn't be anywhere near test team for sometime. Serious technical and mental issues with him. Persist with Pujara and blood some other youngster. Dhoni 5/10 :- Did well with the bat in first test, one of his better innings. But nothing else to harp about. Captaincy was good enough in 2nd test but he lost the plot in the last innings of this match Bhajji 9/10 :- This series was a "Sree" like slap to his detractors. Bowled better than anything I have seen in last 2-3 years. I hope he keeps this up. Zaheer 9/10 :- Arguably one of India's "great" bowlers now made a huge impact with his presence in durban test. Sometimes he didn't seem fit esp. in this test where he almost ambled in to the crease. Tbh I was a bit disappointed with the perfomance in 2nd inn. here. Sree 7/10 :- Only got going from 2nd test. When in rhythm with his head set right he is a joy to watch. But that happens once in a blue moon. Conditions will be ideal for him in England. Needs to make this tour a turning point in his career. Ishant 0/10 :- Nuff said. Get someone else. Umesh or even RP Singh. Ishant needs to go back to drawing board. He was our Tsotsobe except only worse.

Pujara was unlucky I expect him to perform against west indies and england. Ishant was a massive dissapointment. In hind sight We should have played ojha instead of him in this last test. I would rate Zaheer a 7/10 simply because he didn't do anything special in the 3rd test and probably would have struggled had he played the first test.

Jammy looked good , just got a good ball. He will come back soon. He atleast got another year in him.

I wouldn't say 9/10 for Zaheer. More like 7/10 by his standards. Injured for first test, excellent second test and then injured/unfit again in 2nd innings of third test. Thats NOT a 9/10 series by any stretch of imagination.

Sehwag: 3.5/10 - 'cause he's the reason why Smith didn't declare early on D4 and made India bat on D4 evening pitch for last 10 overs or so. Gambhir: 8/10 Dravid: 4/10 Tendulkar: 9/10 (twin fails in T2) Laxman: 8.5/10 (twin failures on T1) Pujara-2/10, Raina 1/10 - Puj has failed, but I'd pick him over Raina as Raina/Yuvi-II is clueless Dhoni - 4/10 Harbhajan - 7/10 Zaheer - 8/10 we are 1-1 because of him Sree 6.5/10 Ishant - 3.5/10 Unadkat - Poor guy, bad timing of debut

What about rating of SA players. To be honest, other than Kallis and Steyn nobody contributed much in this series. It has been "twoman show" from them.

Actually now it is clearer why my arguments are lost on you. Maybe I ll dumb it down for you next time. But just to reiterate for your benefit, I have no interest in the actual stat of No.1 as per ICC ranking. They have their system and India is No.1 according to them. As for the tenability of rankings, prior to this series India had not won a test series against SA in India in last 5 years ( drawn two ), neither drawn or won one in SA, they had not won in Aus, SA have won in Aus., both of them have won in Eng. After his tour India have proved their mettle in SA by drawing (not winning) series which tells you as much about India's record prior to this as much as it explains the "ostrich" approach of so called Indian fans.. So, the question was is India the "undisputed" best team in the world ? I never said there is any other "undisputed" best team in the world. But the crux of the matter was how much should one harp about the ranking and how much should one look at Indian cricket's record at these places from historical perspective. To me you don't become a heavyweight champion till you play and win against the toughest competitors in toughest conditions. For lesser souls like you, the stat of No.1 from ICC might suffice.

1) Can you just post that series ? I actually don't recall that series. 2)Again that is not my point. I have said I have little interest in the rankings per se. I don't look at it in isolation. If it was No.1 team with record of beating all other teams on their home ground, then I wouldn't mind it much. Even the great all conquering Australian side had a question mark on its greatness after 2001 series in India which it did answer later. For me, I look at Indian cricket's history at these places and it is important for me that India prove their progress in conditions where they have traditionally failed. Hence, a perfomance like in Durban makes me the happiest cricket fan

Two test series . Must confess I forgot this one. But that SA side looks pretty weak I must say esp. in bowling. I ll edit my post.

Virender Sehwag 3/10. - He did help us fight back in the first Test, but all in vain.Probably the reason why Smith decide to set a manmoth target was because of presence of this man in the XI.Although he didn't had a wonderful series, he still deserves a 3. Gautam Gambhir 8/10 - He was phenomenal in the third Test, although he looked edgy and streaky at times, but one can understand that, because of the conditions it wasn't easy out there.He batted with some passion on the final day, I can still remember his focus in the Napier Test, and this was almost the same as Napier, but against a better side which makes this innings very special. Rahul Dravid 3/10 - Got some jaffas, some absolute peaches, but all in all, a very disappointing Series for The Wall.We expected so much better outcomes from this man, but to be fair, he was unlucky at times, got run out once and played well on the final day of the Third Test.I expect him to come back strongly in the next Series. Sachin Tendulkar 9.5/10 - Well he was the only ton getter in the whole series, this itself speaks volumes about the tour he had.But again, he would have loved to see India winning after his brilliant 146 in the first innings, but not everything can go the way we want :). VVS Laxman 7.5/10 - Man for crisis.They say he plays well, and India wins, and that is exactly what happened.No one played well, India looked at reaching a fighting total, but this Man made sure we get beyond that, and along with Zak, stringed together a very vital partnership.I have never seen anyone bat so confidently with tail like he does, he thrives under such circumstances, and hence I have tons of respect for this Man.He always performs well when team needs it. Cheteshwar Pujara - 2/10 - He got 2 points just because of some good close in fielding, he never looked comfortable when he was at the crease, but since it was his first tour, we can forgive him as he didn't had any match practice there.But the illusion that some of us were in, about him performing well under trying and testing conditions seems to have taken a U-Turn.I do think he has some talent, but still needs some technical adjustments to survive against good seam attacks. MS Dhoni - 4/10 - Captain Cool played well for his 90 in the first Test, but that wasn't enough to seal the deal.He looked vulnerable against Steyn's swinging ball, and had no answers to Morkel's bouncers.He scored some negative points for his field placements too along with a negative mindset, which perhaps was one off the reasons, why the game slipped out of our hands (3rd Test). Harbhajan Singh 7/10 - Good Series for him.I know when the series commenced, no one thought of Bhajji bowling well, but he did manage to prove everyone wrong with his performance in Durban.The ball was turning, was bouncing, and Bhajji looked menacing, he pitched the ball in the right channel, bowled at the right pace, allowed the ball to bite the surface, and purchased some wickets with skills.He also looked threatening on Day 4, and got us 4 early wickets.He loses his points for not being consistent enough when the pitch had flatten out, and due to his bad performance in first Test. Sreesanth 7/10 - He looked good at times, but was wayward in the first Test.He bowled with some heart in the 2nd and 3rd Test, and looked more like a bowler in rhythm.His consistency was the key in the final Test, where he bowled the right channel all the time, and didn't experiment much with the lengths he bowled (Although he manufactured some new runs for a latest ramp walk ups:D). Zaheer Khan 6.5/10 - Zaheer had an ordinary series.He was injured in the first Test, look out of colour in the 3rd test too.But he scored his points for his good partnership with Laxman which set the tone for an Indian win, and also the initial breakthroughs that he delivered in the Second Test, just made the win possible.All in all, a much better performance is expected from him in the Next Series. Ishant Sharma 0/10 - He was the most disgusting part of the tour, his no ball spree, his inefficiency to bowl at the right channel all the time, his inconsistency in hitting the right lines was the main reason why couldn't build the pressure on the SAF and allowed them to score freely in the second innings of the Third Test after we had them in our net with 6 down for nothing substantial.We had Bhajji and Sree bowling their hearts out to build some pressure, and here Ishant was releasing all the pressure applied, with his bowling, for which even "ordinary" is a compliment. In a nut shell, it was a series of ups and downs.India had their share of ups and downs as well.Both the teams looked very competitive, and we saw some really grooving, absorbing Test Cricket.It was a splendid series, and that is what one expects when a No.1 side clashes with a No.2 side ;-)
