The Outsider Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I don't understand how people can have a serious thread regarding Pathan's selection. It's like opening a thread saying I deserve to be selected for the Indian team. The minimum criteria for selection has surely got to be the ability to go and play cricket matches. Pathan has not played a FC match for a year and has played no competitive cricket after the IPL. Just giving interviews every month about how he is doing this and that in the nets and at the academy qualifies him for selection?
vvvslaxman Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 You contradicted youself. IP is a good player because he was a part of t20 team while Jogi is a terrible player despite winning us the cup literally. If you are talking about T20s, clearly both of them are pretty crap.Although Jadeja has better economy. One days, clearly these economy rate matter more and therefore Jadeja is a better player while Pathan is a crap player who has declined yet people rate him as the next thing. Well.. IK pathan was the man of the match if i am right for that match. I misquoted as Gauti. Secondly.. Jadejas economy is better coz of him bowling middle overs unlike Irfan who often opened bowling in his career and bowled death overs. Wit your argument you can say All seamers are poorer than Jadeja. IK pathan economy 5.25 Ashish Nehra 5.17 Zaheer 4.96 Sreesanth 6.01 RP singh 5.42 Ishant 5.74 Praveen 5.07 Tell me which bowler is light years ahead of Irfan. None. They are all there and there about. They all are going to have this kind of economy considering they play mostly on Indian flat pitches which helps spinners more than pacers. How exactly he is better than a part timer like Yuvraj let alone Irfan. In the matches played together with Yuvi. Jadeja 18 matches 12 wickets 47 avge 5.07 economy rate Yuvraj 18 matches 9 wickets 48 avge 4.65 economy rate Yuvi completely pwns him in the ER front. Irfan has achieved something of note in his career. Jadeja never achieved that even in domestic cricket let alone at the international level.

You are saying as if Indian domestic players are playing 365 days of cricket . He missed this season that's it. Last competitive he game played was in Febrauray 2010. Duleep Trophy final. http://www.cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/259/259166.html After that just one Ranji season he missed. 8 matches to be precise. You sound like he missed some 50 matches.

He was injured last season as well and played only half the season - no one day matches at all and around half the FC matches. You're advocating the selection of someone who has missed 1.5/2 of the last domestic seasons.

It is all to do with a general clamour for him to do well...to be fair I can understand this as, performing well, he would be a genuinely excellent option in shorter format. But people seem to lose all logic and credibility when willing him on. He has not played FC cricket in about a year
Sooda Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Very simple question. Any stats on Mr Pathan Yes, he had a very good season last year before injury cut it off. And did well in the Duleep final too with a 5-fer and useful runs though his brother took the plaudits for that crazy double ton. And whilst youre making pretty insulting comparisions of him and Jadeja consider his MoTM performance in the Perth test taking 5 wickets and a 40 odd batting at no 3 vs Lee Johnson Clark and Tait. Honestly...Jadeja??? please. This is not to mention several fine performances with bat and ball in ODIs. Look youre basing you opinion of him on how he was playing as his form tailed off, Pathan at his best was very very good- possibly a bit reliant on helpful conditions, but not much difference there with our other pacemen. There was a time when India were in red hot ODI form under Greg Chappel and Pathan was an integral member of that side; for a brief while the best ODI all rounder in the world. For now he needs to rpove his form and fitness in domestic cricket, but India could do with a good allrounder and he fits the bill.
flamy Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 I'm not saying that Irfan needs to be drafted right away. Certainly, there are better and more deserving players right now and I don't really see Irfan fitting in the WC team right now. Yuvi has taken over his spot of all-rounder :D And, it is dangerous to pick a seaming all-rounder in subcontinent ODIs. However, he should definitely be an option post-IPL for the national squad (both Tests and ODIs) Even Suresh Raina went away for a couple of years and came back better. I believe in Irfan :icflove:
yoda Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 How can you select someone who hasn't played a cricket match for 10 months in the WC probables? Even if he hasn't held a bat or a ball he is probably better than at least a few of the guys on that list (which honestly I haven't looked at). If he is walking, he should be in the top 30 ODI players in the country, IMO.

Just shows how bad Pathan is that comparisons with jadeja make him look bad Pathan is just a myth perpetuated by the misguided. He was pants for India and has done nothing in domestic cricket to push his selection

And again if one of the few guys on the list according to you did not deserve, includes Jadeja, you need a reality check. Pretty deluded for you to say the same thing for 3 years and still today, yet nothing has happened

Hmmm...isn't a bare minimum of match fitness or practice - the guy had not played a cricket match for 9 months when the probables were announced and still hasn't - a criteria for selection? Irfan is a rare option who can be the elusive all rounder that we need in WC. Look at this comment from the coach which shows that he was in the radar. http://www.crickblog.com/entry/kirsten-expresses-concerns-over-world-cup-2011-indicates-irfan-pathan-is-out/ Here he is not talking fitness rather his bowling speed etc. Why not keep him in the probables at least? It is not like all the other guys in the probables are at the performance level where they are a shoe-in. I hate to bring in IPL here, but let me anyways. If he is really unfit to play do you think a team will risk $2m picking him there?
The Outsider Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 ^ IPL is in April-May. The final WC squad has to be given by January 19. BTW, there was is no restriction that the WC squad has to come from the 30 probables. If Pathan had played and shown his fitness and form, he could still have been drafted in.

Don't think there is any chance whatsoever for him in this WC. His train has gone this time. It is the England tour I was looking to...IF he proves his fitness AND form in the 4 day format as well. IMO, he may get an opportunity to play for English leagues, if not the main county sides, as they might not sign him as their overseas player, and there he can prove his form and fitness.
Feed Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 I will make a comeback in 4-5 months: Irfan More... I will make a comeback in 4-5 months: Irfan May 23, 2011 "I am a man on a mission," cricketer Irfan Pathan said on Monday. "I will make a comback to the national side in the next 4-5 months," he told rediff.com on the sidelines of launch of cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle's book titled The Winning Way. Responding to a query on how he would fulfil his fans' expectations, Irfan said he was fully fit and raring to go but rued the fact that there were no domestic matches to be played in the next few months. "I can guarentee that I am ready for international cricket. My target was to play the ODIs against England. Test cricket will come with time as well. However, there are hardly any domestic matches being played in the next few months where I could have grabbed the attention of the national selectors. The more matches the better it would be for me," he said. "I want to play any form of cricket, anywhere, and I am goint to contact the BCCI to seek their permission to play. But I am looking to make a comback to international cricket in the next 4 to 5 months," he added. Thanking his fans, he said: "When I travel, they always respect me and ask me when I would make a comback. My message to my fans is to make sure that you never give up; never doubt yourself. First of all you need to do what can do with your life. Keep that belief in yourself."
pensionplan Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Talk is cheap. He did nothing of merit to stake a claim to this point after he was sidelined. First do something worthwhile consistently in the domestic cricket and let us see what happens after that.
Ramzz Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Irfan, less talk and more hard work will get you there. Good luck ;)
