Texy Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 8.5/10 from me...touched my heart....this movie deserves its own thread The ending was fascinating for me shows all 4 characters come to term with their societal limitation and constraints This movie was not about Aamir Khan's stardom....what a brilliant actor...took a step back and essayed his brilliance in the background. His gaze through out the film echoes his inner struggle....and the star of the fim...Munna aka Prateik....his poignant personality personified his shy yet outreaching affluence to fulfill his personal dream Monica dogra is absolutely gorgeous ...she overcomes her fascination of mumbai from an outsider perspective to subtly overcoming her inner love for day to day commotion...perfect balance between her character to portray an outsider in a city full of outsiders ie: Munna who himself is from bihar. The muslim girl played by Kriti Malhotra is another example of all the unfathomable hindrance put forth by our society that clamps one's inner dreams of freedom....her love for her brother essayed in her attempt to bring out the positivity surrounding her life while quelling her own turmoil in her marriage. Ahhh loved it.....:hatsoff: to Kiran Rao to presenting the story of our inner struggle with a scapel..digging and poking through each and every character's strength and limitation Background score was brilliant by Gustavo...made the city even more poignant yet so outreaching thru every scene and character development

Which is it? :idunno: it depends one's perception and movie viewing choice. If you have enamored yourself over the years with bollywood latka jhatkas...this film is Not for you. You can't even call this a bollywood movie. you have to the watch the movie like a newborn baby opening his eyes for the 1st time and submerging himself into the world around him, the characters, the locale, the sound, the struggle

Texy Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 Mariyam Your assessment: Aamir Khan is quite subdued in the film. I know his role demands it, but he's way too subdued. Off course, he is subdued..he's the central tree and all other characters are directly/indirectly branched to his character. "shai" played by Monica represents his enthusiastic past, his exuberance of inner self portrayed by himself thru his art. His expressions are his dialogues in this movie. "munna" played by Prateik represents his ambitions, his humble background where he proclaims -- mumbai the city for everyone. "yasmin" played by Kriti represents his struggle w/ his own family, his past relationship that clamored his artistic ambitions. Pratik Babbar put in a decent effort but doesn't look/ walk/behave like a dhobi no matter how hard he tries. He is not supposed to portray a typical 'dhobi' .....he's an aspiring actor....an amble larvae struggling to break out of his cocoon and fly like a butterfly into stardom. He works hard, and developes his physical attributes inspired from posters of other hunky bollywood actors hanging from his wall in his mud hut...towards the end the scene where he runs after Shai's car -- he instantly transforms into someone who comes to term with the realization of his position in the hierarchical class society structure The investment banker chick speaks Hindi as if she has Down's syndrome. Whats up with that? Just because you are a big corporate honcho doesn't mean that you can't speak a word of Hindi coherently???? She's suppose to be an NRI on sabbatical..visiting Mumbai, fiddling with her ever so growing photography interests where she wants to capture the realism of Mumbai. Her lack of local lingo skill essays her inability to be one with the city. She's an outsider trying to fit in thru the highs and lows the city offers. She was chosen for the role especially for her lack of fluency in the language to portray the views of an outsider. (she's actually born and brought up in Maryland, USA) Saving grace- the background score This I agree wholeheartedly. The soothing tone reflects each and every character's undying attempt to go past their inner struggle. Mariyam 1

retterimp Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 saw it on youtube good quality, but by the time got to 3rd last part movie got deleted :( liked what i saw, diffrent than usual bollywood, but nothing great, or maybe im not a deep thinker oh yeah and the actress is gorgeous :)
