When asked whether he will agree if he was offered the post of the bowling coach for India, De Villiers said: "Well, I don't think I shall be able to be with them around the year, but I can definitely be a consultant for the Indian team." "I want to introduce a system through which the budding stars can start bowling 140kmph within six months." "I need to have a group of coaches through which I'll impart training regularly and they will start winning matches for India," he added. The 46-year-old further said that bowling at 140kmph is an art, which the Indian bowlers lack. "The Indian fast bowlers who have bowled in this tour are talented, but they do not know how to bowl real fast and swing it simultaneously," the Gulf News quoted De Villiers, as saying. Ganeshkumar Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Why is the thread-starter angry at Phannie de Villiers? :O He was one of the most unplayable bowlers during the 1990s in ODIs.He couldn't play many Tests,as South Africa was admitted very late into International cricket(He was 28 years old then.)

achilles Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Its just as funny as assuming Stephen Fleming would be an ideal "coach" of the Indian National team. But Fanie was a good bowler and can certainly do a good job, if given a chance.

rkt.india Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Fannie was a superb bowler...Was quick and his javelin throwing style developed coz he was also a javelin thrower was treat to watch with his banana outswingers which were pretty much like dale styen now..He used to swing that way in indian conditions too

First of all, the article has no source, so we dont even know if Fanie said these words for real or not. But if he did, then it is really surprising to see such words coming out of the mouth of such an accomplished bowler. He is going to introduce a system whereby all our emerging bowlers bowl at 140+ in six months? This sounds more like one of those fake weightloss informercials that you on American TV, than a sensible coaching strategy. I dont care what speeds our bowlers bowl at. They can bowl at 150 kph if they could, or even 120 if that is what the manage. All I need them to do is win matches for India by taking wickets and have good endurance. That is what the bowling coach should be focussed on and not some ridiculous speed target set in an unrealistic time-frame.

He has been eying job of Indian bowling coach for some time now. LOL, yeah, 140+ speeds does look like someone just inserted as a hope, perhaps to juice up the article. The actual cricinfo article does not contain that reference. I seriously think we (read BCCI) should decide the newer bowlers' renumerations or bonuses based on the average speeds of balls that are bowled above 135kmph. That way the somewhat true average speeds of the "fast" balls can be better known, and this takes away the surprise slower balls they may bowl in their spells. History has shown us bowlers crash to the scene bowling at a pretty good 140+ pace and within a few months drop their pace to around 125-130 kmph. I remember Munaf Patel was said to be the fastest in the country when promoted to the national team, and within a few months he was nothing more than a trundler. Same with Ishant Sharma. It just becomes easy to bowl slower. Laziness comes naturally. Everything must become performance based. Period.
jibranpatel15 Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 has this become some kind of a pattern for BCCI or what. 1st gary kirsten from no where & suddenly succeded as well that doesn't mean u bring another SA to coaching staff for bowlers. Best choice for IND bowling coach is definately WASIM AKRAM rather than any1 else on earth
