That Vaio is pretty good too for the price. You can't go wrong with that. If I were you, I would go to a sony store and check it out, esp to see the screen and how comfortable I feel with the keyboard. You could even chk the Thinkpad line up. I don't know their price range in UK but T-series is considered to be quite good.

In the last few months, I can count the occasions on my finger tips when I popped in or burnt a DVD. I usually download the stuff, watch movies through iTunes, use flash drives, etc .... I guess, you would need it to re-load the OS, burn a DVD, etc but in my case, it is not getting much use

I use a vaio on regular bases and the volume is very very low. That's the only bad thing about it though :--D HP and Dell laptops don't last more than year. vaio will last a couple of year without any problems.
