Are we wasting Yusuf Pathan?

He is in form batsman, very very destructive, with all top 4 firing and playing longer innings. he is getting very little chance to show his destruction. i think he should be sent one down or 4th and allow him to attack in middle overs. thats the only way we can get past 350+ on consistent basis. and with out bowling attack anything less than 360-370, we're in trouble.

In the last 3 matches including warm up we have made 360, 370, 338.. how much more we can be destructive? We are destructive alright. Yusuf pathan is there for few overs and when there is a collapse situation during a chase he can pull off a miraculous victory. To be honest we are selecting him for one particular situation. I think Raina might come in for the next match.

I agree. I think if we have a good start, say 20 overs or so without a wicket and then if a wicket falls, it'd be the best time to send Pathan and ask him to launch a swift attack...even if we lose his wicket, its allright...he'd have not got to bat anyways.

I hope they play Raina instead of Yusuf

He should be batting when spinners are operating with the older ball.. between 25th and 35th overs. Power play can be taken after the 34th over as we always do. It seems like 330 kind of scores may not be enough against good batting sides.

It will be a very dumb decision to drop Yusuf. He has not gotten an opportunity to bat for a period of time so far. On what basis are you dropping him ? And why would you drop him to bring in another batsman ? It doesnt make any sense.

Yusuf cant hit from the get go (like Raina).he needs an over or two get his bearings right .this might be a problem if he comes in late in the match,i have no problem sending yusuf earlier ahead of yuvi if the situation is right.

2 matches and we are wasting players? vs BD, Sehwag and Kohli batted almost through the innings and the match vs England, Yuvi got back to form. So where's the question of wasting someone? It's a long tournament, everyone will get the opportunity at some stage.

All the top four batsmen have been getting all the runs and 5-7 have been coming with only a few overs to go. That's not a bad headache to have. When the top order fails, 5-7 will get plenty of time and will be under a lot of pressure to deliver.

Here is an idea for the South Africa match. The Saffers know about the hitting ability of YP and are surely a bit fearful of him. If we get off to a good start and lose only 1 or 2 wickets in the 1st 12-15 overs (just after the fast bowlers go off and the spinners come on) i would send in YP after the next man goes out. The Saffers (who are only playing 2 genuine quick bowlers - Kallis is not that threatening these days) would have to decide whether they will bring the quick men back on to try and get rid of him or whether to risk bowling the spinners against him. If they do bowl Steyn and Morkel and they get him out we have the batsman to rebuild. If they bowl the fast bowlers and he plays them out for a couple of overs they will surely take them off after a couple of overs he will get a go at the spinners. If they back their spinners from the moment he comes on he could take them to the cleaners. Does anyone think this could work or is it a stupid idea?

^ No, that's a decent idea. Worth taking the risk because you are correct in saying that they will be forced to alter their plans regarding Steyn and Morkel if Pathan is sent earlier than usual.

Yusuf hasn't reached a stage where he can confidently and consistently deliver. Say what you want. His range of strokes are limited. But ones that he has are devastating and destructive. So it all depends on how he connects on a particular day. So don't build so much hopes on Yusuf. He can do things that no other in our team can do. But that is not going to happen every day. We have to keep our expectations realistic.

#5 would be a good position for YP. Probably that would give him enough time to settle down and get the fireworks going

Folks, don't fix what ain't broke. Our batting is doing fine and fairly well set. No need to tinker around with it and let Pathan play. It's good that he hasn't been needed as you wouldn't want to use your no. 7 a lot. Pathan is more of an insurance against a collapse or in case of high run chase. Let him be and let's focus on the bowling and fielding.
