zen Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 We have seen on many occasions how the batting PP changes the game. Ind lost 4 wkts in this one to bring SA in the game. As far as Ind is concerned, I think, the right time to take it is when the guys in the middle are shaping up well (mentally too) to get the big shots going. Here, both Tendulkar and GG had come out from a mindset of getting their individual milestones, along with milking the middle over, and was probably difficult to for them to switch gears straight away. Best time for Ind would be take it when Viru is playing. That's the safest bet to get some quick runs w/o much heartache for India

Both past their milestones and in good form. Cannot blame the time for the PP.
kabira Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Well when Tendulkar got out, Gambhir should have stayed there until 50th over. thats only thing I am pissed at.
Anakin Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 By milking middle overs they still maintained a very healthy RR. It is the following batsmen who messed up everything.
vvvslaxman Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Batting Power Play - Death Bell If i remember right we made only 30 runs in the batting power play against England. Things started going pear shaped in the power play. This one is worse than that.. Any idea how we handle power play in the last few matches. Not just world cup matches. Overall.
DomainK Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 We have done decently. And PP has not only hurt India, it has created trouble for other teams as well in the past. If I remember right, England's chase against us in the last match got derailed due to PP only. Teams have to be intelligent in using PP and not go over enthusiastic over it. If a couple of wickets fall, a rebuild is necessary and must be done irrespective of whether the PP is on or not.
HowardRoark Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 It is quite a simple thing. PP is not a magic wand that can get you lot of easy runs. Treat it just like the first 10 overs of the innings, where the focus is on punishing the bad balls and trying to get a couple of boundaries every over.
asterix Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 When you are already scoring at a rate of more than 6.5 runs, there's no effing need to take PP early...
vvvslaxman Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 I think it is psyhcological. There is an inherent compulsion that we have to score at some abnormal pace during power play.
HowardRoark Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 I have to agree with what Ravi Sastri suggested today when Sehwag and Sachin were playing - Take it from overs 15 to 20 and all you have to do is keep doing what you did for the last 15 overs. Sensible thinking from Ravi.

Sensible thinking from Ravi. It was an interesting choice. Since they would be forced use their seamers and they won't have anyone for death overs.
Misu243 Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Do you think Tendulkar wanted to take that powerplay? He was in the mindset of hitting and rightly so as he had been accustomed to the pitch after bringing up a hundred. But I feel like he should've waited it out a little bit because its very difficult to come in fresh and start hitting like that. Sending Yusuf was a huge gamble...10 overs went down the drain. India could've brought up at least 50 runs if they kept wickets.
Switchblade Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Its just recently we have started to mess up in the PP if i remember correctly in South Africa during 2nd ODI same thing had happened which happened today and in England game maybe our batters get complacent that there are other guys to come and i also feel that they start to feel the pressure that the PP is about to end so they end up getting out i felt today that either Sachin or Gauti should have stayed till the end i was more unhappy with the way Gambhir got out it looked to be a casual shot to me.But in general if a batsman is set he should make sure he sees off the PP
fineleg Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 As weird as it sounds - I'm just throwing a wild idea out there - Should we not take batting powerplay at all (just decline taking it) and just bat normally? Just like ODIs of the yesteryears. Maybe we can put 330 without too much added pressure that way? I dont know. Maybe this suggestion is knee-jerk based on horror that happened. But what do you folks think?

fineleg Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 ^ No its not mandatory as far as I know. Correct me, if I'm wrong. Teams have on occasion 'forgotten' to take it in some matches?

Yes you are right Raina in Zimbabwe when India fielded forgot to take the 2nd PP but i did hear 1 commentator say that 3rd PP would automatically start frm the 45th over im forgetting the match
vvvslaxman Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 We should get BCCI to abolish Batting power play and reintroduce supersub system :hitler:
Switchblade Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Supersub wasnt that bad IMO wonder why teams hated it
vvvslaxman Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Supersub wasnt that bad IMO wonder why teams hated it It helped India perfectly :cantstop: . Irfan Pathan was effectively used by India.
