If they really wanted an additional spinner logical choice would have been Pragyan Ojha not this guy who didn't exactly do anything in the domestic to merit a place. Even in the IPL he was cartered all over where as Ashwin finished with an impressive economy of 6.10 despite bowling inside power plays. In a T20 6.10 economy is outstanding. Then he won man of the series in champions league in south african condition. In the 7 matches he played he always took vital wickets. He had the added advantage of bowling in the power play. Logical choice should be Ashwin. it is another matter if he fails or succeeds. You cannot randomly pick a spinner and give him chance until he finds his touch. He is also a decent bat. Only downside is his fielding.

So these latter group will always be questioned. So the point is even Ashwin is no logically choice. He has little experience. Ashwin is a big risk itself and there is no point in arguing otherwise. And if you use the IPL performances as the measure, Sachin would not even be in the team. And I can really see why Chawla was selected, surely when we expect Yuvi to complete the 5th bowler quota, the SLA was not an option and Ojha did not go himself anything good with his test performances and offer little batting. So Ojha can be said as unlucky as the squad composition would be greatly negatively compromised with his inclusion. So the other option was a right handed spinner and no better than Chawla who is really no different from Ashwin in any matter. Remember we are not blessed with spinners atm, both Ashwin and Chawla are high risk but are the best ones for the team atm.

Are you saying Chawla is not more "risky" than Ashwin? IIRC Ashwin has performed creditably when given a chance to bowl in intl cricket, not just IPL. On the other hand Chawla hasn't done anything ever... in fact he hasn't even played for India in the past 3 years! Sachin was the highest run getter in the last IPL. Second of all your explanation for picking Chawla out ofnowhere is pretty lame. And also it is in contradiction with what Dhoni said. Dhoni felt Chawla required more confidence than Ashwin. Ashwin has been part of the Indian squad and played in the recent times something Chawla hasn't done for more than 2 years. Ashwin was the highest wicket taker from both sides in the recently concluded Ind/NZ series. How do you explain that Chawla would have been a better choice. Chawla was nowhere in the frame until the squad was announced. It was a contentious decision from the outset.

what excuses???????????????/.I am just laying it out there.we had 6 league matches to get our combinations right and some minor issues (like batting order,batting PP) etc.We have completely failed to accomplish most of these goals and are right back where we started before the WC.It is reasonable to expect that the 2 spinners who are competing for the 2nd spinner's spot would each get 3 matches each unless you believe Dhoni's idiotic psychobabble about giving chawla "confidence" .the only positives so far are the batting of sachin,viru and to some extent Yuvi's all round performance.

Sachin was poor in the IPLs as a whole, and there definitely better players in IPL who did not get into the team (Rohit Sharma??) So please do not bring IPL into this issue. I does not matter what Dhoni says after a match because his role is to protect his under pressure players. But your point is why was he picked him before not after the match. Ashwin was part for a little time and surely you cannot make your statement of that being a great achievement. Even Rohit Sharma was the highest scorer in our series in Zim. Chawla may not be best choice for first 11 but there is definitely a solid logic behind his selection for the squad. And maybe he is showing more in the training to get into the first 11 than Ashwin

Please explain why. Chawla has sucked big time while Ashwin deserves a chance as he done well in the few chances he has got so far. What makes you 'think Ashwin is as bad as Chawla'? He may well turn out to be as bad. That's another thing. But how did you jump to the conclusion without giving him a chance at all? Bias overriding common sense??

Ashwin is an off-spinner and so as such replace another off-spinner IMO. Bhajji hasn't been taking wickets consistently over the last few years. Chawla has gone for runs, but in this World Cup, we've already seen what damage a quality leg-spinner can make (Imaran Tahir, Shahid Afridi). I would give him another chance.

How did you reach that conclusion? Coz Ashwin's performances for India don't back your conclusion. Since you make your "points" based on your "views" which have no bearing on actual performances, let me show you some stats for both these players in the games they have played for India courtesy cricinfo's Statsguru... Ashwin Mat Runs HS Bat Av 100 Wkts BBI Bowl Av 7 38 38 19.00 0 14 3/24 23.21 Chawla Mat Runs HS Bat Av 100 Wkts BBI Bowl Av 25 38 13* 5.42 0 32 4/23 34.90 I am sure in your "view" both are "risky" and Ashwin's 14 wkts in 7 games at an average of 23 is as risky as Chawla's average of 35 :haha:

Didn't we get it right by allowing the team blend well by playing the same team in the matches instead of the chop in and out where players will have little time and too much pressure to perform in that match. And saying that, with the WC, every player should grab their chances and not make excuses( which includes the fans)
