Ashwin patiently waits in the wings

Ashwin is an off-spinner and so as such replace another off-spinner IMO. Bhajji hasn't been taking wickets consistently over the last few years. Chawla has gone for runs, but in this World Cup, we've already seen what damage a quality leg-spinner can make (Imaran Tahir, Shahid Afridi). I would give him another chance.
The keyword is "Quality". If Chawla can't perform against the likes of Ireland and Netherlands in group games, what makes you think he's gonna perform against much better sides in pressure games? Harbhajan has been much better than Chawla so why should Harbhajan be dropped for Chawla? Just because Chawla is a leg spinner? SL won the cup in 96 with the likes of Murali, Dharamsena, Aravinda and Jayasuriya as their main spinners and 3 of those are off-spinners. It's the quality and how the players fit in with the team plan which matters not the variety.

Is Chawla one? He has one of the worst economy in this world cup. Going over 6.

I guess you will never understand. Didn't we get it right by allowing the team blend well by playing the same team in the matches instead of the chop in and out where players will have little time and too much pressure to perform in that match. And saying that, with the WC, every player should grab their chances and not make excuses( which includes the fans)
Well chawla has not grabbed his chances (infact he has failed miserably).Dhoni thinks Ashiwin is very mature and does not any practice. The aim of the league games should be to get the combination right for the knockout stages. Its no good when you keep playing a failure hoping that he will come good.Chawla is a good bowler but he bottles it in the international stage. He should never have been picked in the squad at all.

Please explain why. Chawla has sucked big time while Ashwin deserves a chance as he done well in the few chances he has got so far. What makes you 'think Ashwin is as bad as Chawla'? He may well turn out to be as bad. That's another thing. But how did you jump to the conclusion without giving him a chance at all?
You are missing the point. I am in no way saying Chawla is better than Ashwin. And I am not even saying Chawla should play the next match. Of course, Ashwin should play if he performs well in the training but that does not mean that Chawla is a bad player and just does not deserve in the squad.
How did you reach that conclusion? Coz Ashwin's performances for India don't back your conclusion. Since you make your "points" based on your "views" which have no bearing on actual performances, let me show you some stats for both these players in the games they have played for India courtesy cricinfo's Statsguru... Ashwin Mat Runs HS Bat Av 100 Wkts BBI Bowl Av 7 38 38 19.00 0 14 3/24 23.21 Chawla Mat Runs HS Bat Av 100 Wkts BBI Bowl Av 25 38 13* 5.42 0 32 4/23 34.90 I am sure in your "view" both are "risky" and Ashwin's 14 wkts in 7 games at an average of 23 is as risky as Chawla's average of 35 :haha:
22 22 190.4 6 943 28 4/23 33.67 4.94 Chawla's stat before the world cup, clearly they are exactly in the same boat. Of course, Chawla has performed bad in recent matches, but clearly he is better than people think and Ashwin is clearly not as good as people think. I wonder if Ashwin will keep this record in 25 matches. So again few sample size to compare between both of them as both are not very experienced.

Sachin was poor in the IPLs as a whole, and there definitely better players in IPL who did not get into the team (Rohit Sharma??) So please do not bring IPL into this issue. I does not matter what Dhoni says after a match because his role is to protect his under pressure players. But your point is why was he picked him before not after the match. Ashwin was part for a little time and surely you cannot make your statement of that being a great achievement. Even Rohit Sharma was the highest scorer in our series in Zim. Chawla may not be best choice for first 11 but there is definitely a solid logic behind his selection for the squad. And maybe he is showing more in the training to get into the first 11 than Ashwin
All the players you have referred have done something.. either in IPL or some series. What has Chawla done in the recent times? Best answer you are coming up with is "He may have shown more in the nets". You are willing to discount high pressure IPL games where he often opened the innings with ball. What about Champions league where they were playing for 6 million dollars. He won man of the series in alien conditions. But you are using his "possible net performance" to support your theory. THat is a brilliant argument.

Net performance is the difference between being in the team and being in the squad. If you argue with that, then I cannot explain more. Remember, Chawla and Ashwin both started the world cup with decent records, Ashwin was inexperienced and played far to few matches against more countries. So logically, Chawla would be better. He got a chance to play and with common sense, one bad innings or one good innings does not make the player bad/good. Therefore, he has been given chances after his 1 match. Now saying that, you can have a case of Chawla having 1 too many chance but there cannot have a case on saying Chawla was a bad selection and should have never even played or be in squad.

Point 1: Chawla's average was 33.91 whereas Ashwin's average is 23. Are you telling me they are in the same category? Coz if you are I don't think you have any understanding of the game of cricket. I sure hope you realize the difference between bowling average of 23 and 34. Point 2: So now we have "clearly" seen what Chawla can do though he was given enough chances and that too against the likes of Netherlands and Ireland. In fact Chawla should have inflated his stats bowling against minnows but he was carted by even the minnow batsmen!!! Don't you think Ashwin deserves a chance now as Chawla hasn't done much. Or should we play him in every game till India crashes out just coz he's as "risky" as Ashwin?

I don't think Chawla and Ashwin should be compared..Both bowl differently and at different stages of the match.. Let's see how Ashwin performs if he gets a chance. Whoever grabs the opportunity to cement his place, will stay for a long time in the ODI team. I think Dhoni will introduce Chawla in the Test matches as he has had enough of Mishra, which could be a good move for both Chawla and the team..provided Chawla sorts his habit of bowling No-Balls and atleast one short and wayward ball an over..

3 bad inngs do make the player bad. It is not only that. Did you even watch his bowling? It was worse than club bowling. Half tracker after half tracker. We do have a case that he should have never been in the squad. It was discussed as soon as the squad was announced. http://www.indiancricketfans.com/showthread.php?t=259634&

Since Chalwa has done so badly and everyone has been saying "bring Ashwin bring Ashwin...." now there will be tremendous pressure on Ashwin and even worse for him, Craptain Dhoni seems to like Chalwa more than Ashwin, so just one failure for Ashwin will be more than enough to bring back Chawla IMO.

"It is good to have Piyush in the side as he provides that variety to the attack. He is one guy who can bat a bit. He has scored decent runs in Ranji and also while playing in County circuit. If we plan to play with five bowlers, then he can be a handy number seven or eight batsman,"- This was the reason Cheeka picked him :cantstop: Handy batsman. That is rich. He has mentioned about his runs in Ranji. He forgot to notice his pathetic average of 44 in Ranji.

If he does it would be rather stupid to go back to Chawla. Drop them both and go for Sreesanth. Regardless of how Ashwin does in the match, we should rid ourselves of this costly infatuation with Chawla. This guy is an insult to leg spin bowling atleast in current form.

+1 Watching a player play will tell you what kind of material he is. When Chawla starts his run up to bowl he doesn't look like who can look in the face of the batsman confidently and take him on. He doesn't look like someone who has the skills to outwit the batsman. He looks more or less like a lamb that's about to be sacrificed. He gives a feeling that he wants to get done with the delivery as soon as possible and hopefully the batsman won't hurt him much. And such a player, we can defintely do without in a premier tournament like world cup.

The last reason that I would want is a non- cricketing audience explaining in-depth technical analysis on "their" opinion and teaching how a cricket player should behave in their opinion. After all, I guess most of us never played for any levels of India and so no point in mentioning these kind of comments.

:hysterical: Irony is Chawla averages 5 with the bat after 25 games and Ashwin is a much better bat as well compared to Chawla. Maybe next they will say Chawla is a much better fielder, has great leadership qualities and is a potential India captain to keep out Ashwin :cantstop:

Please speak for yourself. Don't expect others to be of the same level as you when it comes to cricketing knowledge and experience.

That's a hoot coming from a guy whose argument is littered with "in my view" and "point of view" without even looking at the stats. So you don't argue based on stats and you wouldn't "want a non- cricketing audience explaining in-depth technical analysis on "their" opinion" So what exactly is the argument based on? Your "opinions" and what you "feel" is right? :cantstop:

Good, please tell what have you done so differently than a typical supporter? There is absolutely No logic in your previous post mentioning your psychology report on Chawla and teaching Chawla on how to bowl.
