It'll make for a fascinating study to see how the entire operation was carried out. I hope someone will make a kick a$$ documentary on the entire saga. Mumbai, May. 23 (PTI): Five persons, including 84-year-old Abdul Aziz Gharatkar, were sentenced to rigorous imprisonments ranging from six years to fourteen years in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case by the TADA court here today. Gharatkar, who accompanied main landing agent Dawood Phanse in both landings at Shekhadi coast in February 1993, when the arms and RDX arrived in India, was given six years' rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 50,000. "Old people go for morning walk. He went for a night-walk," special TADA Judge Pramod Kode said, referring to the fact that Gharatkar must have been about 70 in 1993. Tulshiram Dhondu Surve, a watchman at the Wangani Microwave Tower who allowed the use of tower premises -- a government property -- for unloading and reloading of contraband before its journey to Mumbai, was sentenced to nine years' rigorous imprisonment and directed to pay a fine of Rs 55,000. "Who were your real bosses ? The government or the smugglers to whom you accorded such hospitality for a paltry amount of Rs 2,000 ?" Kode asked Surve. The "operational in-charges" of the arms and ammunition landing at the Dighi coast -- Uttam Potdar and Mohammed Lajpuria alias "Mechanic Chacha" -- were sentenced to 14 and 10 years' rigorous imprisonment respectively and directed to pay a fine of Rs 1.5 lakhs each. Kode held that the "main mind" in the landing was Potdar, as he negotiated with the police party at Dongar Phata and also facilitated the landing on behalf of one of the prime accused Mohammed Dossa, who is at present absconding. However, Kode said both Potdar and Lajpuria were spared the life sentence because they were not aware of what was being smuggled into India untill the actual landings began. The judge also noted that Lajpuria had initially objected to the landing of anything other than silver -- the usual contraband -- but relented after talking to his masters in Dubai. Also sentenced today was rickshaw driver Sajjad Alam who was awarded a prison term of seven years' rigorous imprisonment and directed to pay a fine of Rs 50,000 by the court. Alam had participated in the landing at Shekhadi and had taken the main accused to the coast in his autorickshaw and also transported the contraband in the same vehicle. Special Judge P D Kode while sentencing the 83-year-old Dawood Phanse to life imprisonment, imposed a fine of Rs two lakh on him and added that he was spared the death penalty considering his age. Phanse was convicted of going to Dubai and attending a meeting with gangster and prime accused Dawood Ibrahim in which the conspiracy to carry out the serial blasts in the city was made. The court sentenced Muzzamil Umar Kadri, found guilty of participating in landing explosives and arms at Shekhadi in Raigad and illegal possession of 13 AK-56 rifles, was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to pay a fine of Rs 1.25 lakh. Khalil Nasir, also convicted for his role in the Shekhadi arms landing, was awarded ten years rigorous imprisonment and directed to pay a fine of Rs 1.25 lakh by the court. Another convict, Mohammed Dawood Khan, found guilty of keeping three AK-56 rifles in his posession, was given six years RI and ordered to pay a fine of Rs 50,000. The court sentenced Mohammed Yusuf Botomiya to six years' RI and ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 50,000 for illegally possessing a AK-56 rifle. Aziz Shaikh, found guilty of illegal arms possession, was given five years' RI and orered to pay a fine of Rs 25,000. The court also sentenced Salim Durrani, the scion of the formerly princely state of Tonk, to five years' RI and Rs 25,000, for illegal possession of an AK-56 rifle. Guest dada_rocks Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Court should be swift particularly in heinous cases like this. If that happens there will be no need for extra-judicial killing by police. But the way judiciary works today crminals run free in prime of his crime career and any incarceration if at all happens comes at the fag end of his life. What's the point of this kind of justice system.

DomainK Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Sanjay Dutt has been sentenced to jail for five years. The SC reduced his sentence from six to five after his counsel brought in his good conduct and his participation in various charitable acts. They were asking for probation, which was not granted keeping in view the seriousness of the crime. He has already spent 18 months in jail. It's speculated that he will have four weeks time to surrender and serve out the rest of his sentence. Technically, however, he has right to a review of the judgement in front of the same panel of judges that delivered the judgement. That however will not stop or deffer his surrender and subsequent incarceration.

Raghav_12 Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Seems harsh when you hear such punishment 20 years after crime. But then your past catches up with you. Can't complain. And with SC giving verdict, there is no more door left for Sanjay Dutt.
