Stuge Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 New Delhi: World champions India's success is, to an extent, a result of the initiatives taken by their former coach Greg Chappell during his controversy-marred two-year stint with the team, feels outgoing Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss. The controversial Australian's tumultuous tenure ended after the India's first-round exit from the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies. "I really don't know what went wrong with Greg. But I am sure the kind of hard work that Greg put in during his times like shuffling the team and giving the younger players a chance is playing a part in India's success now," Bayliss said. Post Chappell, India enjoyed a hugely successful period under the guidance of former South Africa opener Gary Kirsten. The winning run that started with the Border-Gavaskar trophy in 2008-09 culminated with the silverware in Mumbai last Saturday. "Kirsten has been a great player of his time, knowledgeable and is well respected. To be a good coach, you first have to get the respect of the players and Gary achieved that over his time there. And the results have helped him too," Bayliss, a former first-class cricketer, said. The 47-year-old Aussie, under whom the islanders have won five Test series while losing two, has also identified India and Australia as the 'last frontier' for Sri Lankan cricket. "We will like to win away from home, especially in Australia and India. These are the two big frontiers for Sri Lankan cricket. Having beaten India in Sri Lanka in 2008 and recently beating Australia in a ODI series Down Under, I would like to believe that we are getting closer to that goal," he was quoted as saying by 'espnstar.com'. Asked for his take on Justin Langer, whose name has been floating as Kirsten's successor, Bayliss said the former Australia left-hander "will be able to bring in some new thinking on the table for India". "I have never seen Langer coach. I have played a few times against him many years ago, but honestly have no idea of what sort of coach he would make. Like his playing days, Langer will be very dedicated to his job and hardworking and what more can you ask from a coach? "Langer played during Australia's most successful era, so he will be able to bring in some new thinking on the table for India." Like Kirsten, Bayliss too stepped down citing family reasons. "Almost four years without your family is a tough situation in itself. I am first going back to my family in Sydney and will take it from there. Four or five years in a position is a long time. Sreesanth . . . I am sorry but he didnt find anyone. IIRC it was Srikanth who "found" dhoni and raina for the A tour and after Dhoni's enormous success in Africa, he powered his way to the Indian team. If you go back to the old ICF, there were many people who were already rooting for Dhoni before he even made his debut. If it was upto Chappel, we would be without all our seniors who cannot run/field well and not flexible in the batting order. That would have included Sachin, Sehwag, Zaheer, Munaf and Yuvraj, basically most of our best performing players in this WC.

Dhoni was already doing very well in domestic matches. So we couldn't keep him away. Raina was already a force in India under-19 world cup. Sreesanth.. he got shot into limelight through challenger trophy when he dismissed Sachin Tendulkar much like Chawla who also got the attention when he dismissed Sachin.

This pint size retard was hurting us so bad that we started looking for a keeper in all nooks & corners. And in came Dhoni... Point is it makes no sense to cite their win in Lanka to say they are coming closer to winning in India when they keep getting thrashed in India.

In any Indian team, you cannot last long if you begin to antagonize the seniors and Greg did exactly that. One after one, he took on almost every senior player in the team. He was instrumental in the demoting of Ganguly from the captain’s post and even got him dropped. He asked Sachin to come down the order in ODIs, something Sach absolutely loathes. He called Zak fat and dropped him from the team. He even managed to piss of Sehwag. The only pillar of the Indian team that wasn’t at loggerheads at Chappell was Dravid and this caused a lot of tension between Dravid on one side and the rest on the other. If you’re the coach of the Indian national cricket team and you want to succeed, you better get on the good books of the established players.

Sadly Guru Greg had this crazy idea of providing stability in the middle order. Sachin brings out his A game to world cup invariably. Not surprisingly 3rd time in a world cup he was the highest run getter for India.

Ram Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 But to be fair to Guru Greg, the circumstances under which Kirsten became coach were far more conducive than what was present when Greggie took over. Gary took over right about the time the team was transitioning from the old guard (Ganguly, Kumble, Dravid) to the new leadership coterie within the Indian team (MSD, Sach, Bhajji, Zak). That meant Gary could sell his plans and strategies to the team much easier, without having to constantly watch his back. Plus, you can never discount the impact of a made-to-order captain. Dhoni is everything you want a captain to be and more. Under him, with this team, we would have probably accomplished most the things that we did, even without Gary.
