Duncan Fletcher to be the new Indian Coach

All the players met him while they were in SA. If they seemed happy with him, why do we fans have issues, thinking we know his personality and whether it would be good for the players or not

Some people need to realise that at the top level these people are managers then coaches. You dont need to be coached and taught at this level, you need to be managed. Thats what Gary did, hopefully this grandfather does too.

this is a disaster in making.... I can already see it.. MSD ego clashing w/ Fletcher ....Where is Dada...plz coach the team

Why is having a disciplinarian a bad thing? IMO its good for our team culture
too much of discipline can lead to clashes among the coach and players .that can lead to disaster :(

I don't think the players will have problem with Fletcher, he will be in the Gary Kirsten model, unobtrusive, letting the players get on with it and helping them. His issue during his time in England was mainly with the media, he never got along with them and the media in India can be even more intrusive and harsh then the English media. Some English jurno already tweeted that it will be interesting to see Fletcher interact with his old nemesis - the English media during India's tour here.

Stop being an A** and support him . Interesting thing is we are already predicting clashes etc. BCCI may have listened to seniors like sachin and captain before appointment.

We shouldn't make rash criticisms and label him as an egomaniac. Let's not forget that Fletcher worked well with Vaughan (seems quite a similar character to Dhoni) and England made very good progress throughout his tenure. It's not like a hands-off, relaxed approach is the only way to go for us just because of the Chappell disaster.. Fletcher's is a two-year contract, enforced changes in Indian cricket will be made during that time, it's not like the seniors who manage/coach themselves will be around forever in both formats. Certainly in the ODI team, u guys will be the first to complain about lax management if the next generation are unfit and unmotivated..

A bit shocked to be honest - I have concerns about how he will fit in with the Indian environment. That said, with Fleming unwilling to take up full time coaching there weren't many top class candidates left. I guess Kirsten's recommendation made the difference in the end. Still, wish Fletcher all the best now that he is our coach. One thing is that Fletcher is a very good batting coach - this should hopefully help some of our youngsters who struggle on more pace friendly pitches.

He also shaped the highly potent seam bowling attack of England in 2005: Freddy, Harmison, Jones and Hoggard all bloomed under him. I think he also handled a limited ability spinner like Giles rather well. He also knows the SA and English game very well, he knows how the Aussies can be defeated. Those are the three teams that will challenge India in the next 2 years, so we have the right man to help us plan and strategise. I am very hopeful and see this as a good move in the circumstances.

Well, Troy Cooley was credited with the success of the seam attack (though Cooley hasn't been as successful with the Aussie seamers so maybe it was just the talent of those English bowlers rather than coaching). As for Giles, actually Fletcher is obsessed with spinners needing to bat - he kept out Swann so I don't think his handling of spinners is worth praise. Agreed that he knows the SA and English games thoroughly, though, and that should be an advantage. But by far my biggest concern is his controlling nature - it simply will not work in Indian cricket. Hopefully Kirsten has spoken to him about this and he will adjust appropriately.

How are all saying Fletcher is egoistic ? He never tried to seek attention when he was coach of England . He always stayed away from controversy and was known to have great relation with players ? So again i am asking how all are saying he is egoistic and Chappel -II ? I bet most of u said Kristen is inexperienced and a poor choice and blamed BCCI when BCCI appointed him . I am sure BCCI knows more about coaching appointments more than some of our fickle fans

U are completely wrong. He wasnt obsessed with spinners needing to bat but that bowlers should contribute with bat something Kristen also always stressed . Swann was not selected because of his attitude problems which now he seems to have learned now.

Fletcher may not be egotistic but is headstrong and likes to impose his thinking on others. Just read his newspaper coulumns for the Guardian. At his age he won't change and there could be some difficult times ahead as often as with England it has been his way or the highway. Several Eng players were dropped in the past if they were not seen to be pulling their weight. He also likes multi-dimensional players so you have to be good in fielding as well as batting/bowling. The likes of Munaf Patel may see their international career's coming to an end. One good thing is that the lazy mentality (esp in terms of fielding) of some the Indian players will be in for a rude awakening as Fletcher does not take any prisoners, it will be shape up or ship out.
