theguyinallblue Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 Dravid recommended for Khel Ratna Team India skipper Rahul Dravid , who lost the race for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna to cueist Pankaj Advani last year, has been recommended again for country's highest sports award. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also recommended middle order batsman Yuvraj Singh and former women's team captain Anjum Chopra for Arjuna awards. Incidentally, Yuvraj too was recommended for the same award last year. The Khel Ratna is given for the most spectacular and outstanding performance and it carries a cash award of Rs. five lakh. Arjuna Award, given for good performance consistently for previous three years, carries a cash award of Rs three lakh. Dravid (34) has been the Indian team's backbone for years now, averaging 57.46 with 9366 runs including 24 centuries in the Test arena. He also aggregates 10,189 runs in ODIs. Woman boxer Mary Kom and tennis Grand Slam winner Mahesh Bhupathi are the other athletes who have been recommended for the Khel Ratna this year. Sachin Tendulkar is the only cricketer who has been bestowed the honour so far. Dravid played a key role in India's historic Test win against Australia in Adelaide in 2003-04 and also shared a marathon partnership with VVS Laxman in the 2001 Kolkata Test against Australia. Yuvraj, 25, has emerged as a vital cog in the Indian line up since making a memorable debut against World Champions Australia in 2000. Anjum, a left-handed batter from Delhi, played in 12 Tests and scored 548 runs. She also featured in 105 ODIs scoring 2465 runs. Rahul Dravid deserves this award for being the Best Batsman in the indian team ..and for being the Most Valuable player in the team... he has scripted many a landmarks in the indian test cricket history.. he has never backed out from the challenges... be it..when the appointed captain deserted the team at the sight of green pitch..or be it the hostile and difficult pitches of australia in the enemy land...or taming the fast and furious bowlers of pakistan in pakistan... he has done it all.....so friends..lets pray that he wins it this time.

Rahul Dravid is a great player, to that there is no doubt. However what has he really done this year to achieve this glory? The chap has been playing for 10-12 years now and the last 2 years should probably be his worst, as also India's. So what exactly is he being given this award for this year? xxxx
King Posted June 2, 2007 Posted June 2, 2007 Hype Lurker, it's just the hype. The BCCI wants a piece of space in a daily hence this recommendation. BCCI should be the last sporting body to be recommending anyone for a national award. The results have been so bad this year it should be marked as a dark year in Indian cricket. BCCI recommends a cricket player for this award.. oh the irony

Dravid could become only the third cricketer to win the Khel Ratna after Sachin Tendulkar (1997-98) and MS Dhoni (2007-08). Dravid, who ended a 16-year international career earlier this year, has already won the Arjuna Award in the year 1998. adi B Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 T20 WC 2007 and ODI WC 2011 he won in 2008..dont know what was the basis of giving the award to him on basis of 07 t20 wc? then in that case yuvraj deserved it more..had he got after 011 wc win ,then it would have been still bearable., but if a t20 wc win is the criteria, then i think test cricket is not given much priority while choosing the candidate

These awards are subjective and a lot happens behind the scenes than we know of. Let it go.

Let it go. true enough, then the least i can hope is that dravid too would get the award...though he is much above such awards
