But anyhows, since I have been following Test cricket, India's two overseas failure have been shrouded in controversy, the SA's appeals suspension saga, and we all know what happened in Aus 07/08. I would say even that loss in SL had tinge of controversy with UDRS introduction. Other than that they have always come away with decent results in both one day and tests since I have been following test cricket around 2005. Infact I think I always expect them to win, tbh the only team I worry when India plays is Sri Lanka!,

All this while just heard from oldies how India won the world cup in 83, how it changed the cricket scenario in our country. Hell it even made people lose interest in our national sport Hockey. I wanted to witness India win it badly. 2003 we were so close yet so far, In 2007 it was a painful heart break. But this time it was too good to be true, Sachin's last world cup and to beat Australia and Pakistan, Just sums up the perfect World cup dream for any Indian fan.

Dhoni has done a great job and taken India to a different level, but Ganguly was the one who fought against the system which allowed people like Dhoni to make a mark. Before Ganguly took over regional and quota selections were rampant. Ganguly was the captain who fought for players he believed in (Yuvi, Sehwag, Bhajji, Kaif, Zaheer etc.) when they weren't even from his region! He not only backed them to the hilt but fought for them against the selectors. Case in point backing Yuvi even though selectors wanted to drop him in mid 2000s or backing Harbhajan all the way when he was kicked out of the National cricket academy. Without Ganguly Bhajji's career would have been probably gotten over and we wouldn't have seen Sehwag as an opener or even Yuvi come to the party in the shorter formats of the game. The other aspect is the steel & resolve he instilled in Team India. Wins are not a result of talent alone but a function of self belief and attitude as well along with talent. The reason India under-performed in 90s was because of absence of the first two. Back in 90s I actually saw Srinath hit Ponting with a bouncer and then apologize to him! That was not all - Ponting then gave a nice long sounding off to Srinath telling him to go mind his own business and I still vividly remember Srinath walking back head down back to the bowling mark! I was so pissed off at Srinath at the moment, and still haven't forgotten him for that incident, that if I had been a selector I would never have selected him for India ever. When you represent India fans expect you to fight all the way. At least Ganguly gave us that bit. His team may have lost but never due to a lack of fight and you wouldn't see an opponent mouthing off at an Indian player and getting away with it. Can you imagine any Indian bowler, or batsman for that matter, now who will take that sort of abuse lying down? The credit for that change goes to Ganguly. It is very easy to forget the past when times are good but one needs to give credit to the people who made the present what it is now.
