zen Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Flying out of/to Toronto itself is a scary experience when you look at the cost. YYZ, if I am not wrong, is the most expensive airport. Airlines like Air India didn't even used to operate this route because of the landing fees charged by YYZ. If I have the facts correct, if a Boeing 767 were to land at say Atlanta, it would have to pay say a few 100 dollars (may be $500), now take the same plane and land it at YYZ and it would have to pay a few thousand dollars (probably $8000-$9000). And on top of that YYZ charges passengers too :P

Mariyam Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 This experience isn't mine, but of a friend who had gone to Indonesia on a vacation with his family. He absolutely hated the place, loved the people and said that those who think that Indian transportation is inefficient haven't seen Indonesia. the flight left such an indelible effect on his mind, that he never skips a chance to recount his (mal)experience. I must have heard it 6 times already. The family took the Garuda ( Indonesian national carrier). Apparently that was the only airline that does ( or did) a direct Mumbai-Jakarta. Everyone else goes via Singapore. Now, I don't know why someone would not want to visit Changi airport, but thats a different story. Their plane takes off from Mumbai, but they have to make an emergency landing back in Mumbai because of some supposed technical flaw in the airline. The emergency landing isn't smooth and lots of baggages fall from the over head lockers. These people are made to wait in the plane for 2 hours while the necessary maintenance checks/ repairs take place. All this while they aren't offered anything except toffies and water. The plane takes off after a 2 hour delay and everyone is pretty hungry by then. The captain announces that they don't have sufficient food for everyone as a lot of it was lost when the food storage trays fell down during the emergency landing. He never explains why his team couldn't procure more food during the 2 hours of halt. Mini fights break out over food and the air hostesses have a tough time controlling the people. In between, the in flight entertainment system conks off and doesn't come back on for the rest of the journey. Finally they reach Jakarta and have to pass through a cloud to land at the airport. The captain says that its raining very heavily and that they will have to hover around for a few minutes. The few minutes stretch to nearly an hour. The landing too is very bumpy and the passengers are asked to come out in the heavy rain and wait for a bus. Unfortunately for my friend and his family, the bus ferrying passengers is full and they have to wait in the rain for the next one. Needless to say that they were totally drenched. They reach their hotel finally, 5 hours behind schedule. The next morning in the newspaper, they come across a news article that says that their flight had to make an emergency landing in Jakarta as they were running out of fuel. The ATC has asked them to hover around, because a section of the airport wall had collapsed onto the runway because of the heavy rains. Planes weren't allowed to land while the debris was being cleared. But this flight had to land on a debris laden runway because they were running out of fuel. They immediately canceled their return reservations with Garuda.
zen Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I've had just one terrible experience. I was returning from NY to Mumbai via Frankfurt. It was a Lufthansa flight. It was in 2009 and I was with my mom. Everything was very uneventful and takeoff was pretty smooth. I was seated in the centre section, with my mom on one side and a German guy in his mid 30s on the other. How did I know he was a German? I heard him shpekhen dokh dokh with the stewardess. Generally, I like talking to these European types to listen to their accents. So that I can imitate them later when back in India. So I just started small talk with this guy. But he wasn't interested at all. He just answered very curtly in yes/no. I didn't understand. Here was a beautiful smart girl trying to talk to him and he was reading the in-flight entertainment magazine. Surely I can't be that boring. :whack: Or maybe he was gay. Or maybe he was just being German. After 1 hour, there was a slight disturbance. The flight shook violently for a few seconds. I thought that maybe it was a one off thing. After a gap of 30 seconds, the flight shook violently again. this time with more ferocity than before. I was watching some stupid movie on my laptop and didn't bother. But my mother who was asleep woke up. Then for the next 5 entire minutes the plane kept shaking violently. No one announced anything, neither did they put on the seat belt sign. All this while the German was reading his inflight magazine. Then the shaking got more violent, and we could feel the over head baggage being tossed around. It also felt as if the plane was losing altitude. The captain finally managed to come on the PA and said disturbance yadda yadda. As he was saying this the plane shook even more violently. This time even the captain was shocked, you could sense that in his voice. He put the seat belt indicator on. The plane was shaking now like it was nobody's business. Drinks were falling off the tray tables, the baggage was making noises above and it felt as if the plane was bouncing. My mom suddenly got out a prayer rosary, which I saw for the first time in my life and started praying. She also held tightly onto me and kissed me a couple of times on my forehead. I was very scared, but she was 10x as scared as me. Everyone was panicking.Now this German casually asked me a question: German : Why is she (my mother)worried? Me : (I didn't know what to say. Maybe dying in a plane crash, or being stuck in a submarine in the North Sea, or in a tank in France or under the snow in the Russian steppe might be normal things in an average German's life. But these things make us Indians worry. Of course I didn't say all this. Difficult to be a smart ass in those circumstances.) German: Its ok. The pilots are trained. This is normal. Me: What? German: A pilot has to go through a test in which his plane loses altitude and does a half tilt and he is asked to regain control of the plane. Only if he can do that 4-5 times does he get a commercial license. These Lufthansa pilots are trained for it. They are the best in the world. He said that Lufthansa bit very proudly. Me: ( obviously I was comforted by this knowledge) How do you know? German: I work in the aviation sector. He went back to reading the magazine. The disturbance/turbulence continued for the next 10 odd mins.But after hearing this both me and my mom felt so much better. And re-assured. We weren't that scared anymore. Furthermore, this guy besides us was reading that magazine as if he was on a hammock in Margoa and not in plane that was shaking violently. His calmness gave us confidence. This German read the same magazine in both English and German for the rest of the journey. At Frankfurt, he got off. Just before he got off, he smiled at me. I smiled back. He told me a joke on Lufthansa which was very unGerman (read:funny). He then said that he had bluffed and that worked in the hospitality sector and had no idea about aircrafts or pilots. The he walked away. The rest of the journey was uneventful. We reached Mumbai. I never saw those prayer beads again. And mom's kisses have been replaced by the usual quota of flying sandals and ladles. Finally found time to read this .... I liked how you portrayed the contrast b/w how your mom and the German reacted to the event (:P)!

The Vienna Airport is not that huge so it is easy to catch your connecting flight. wi-fi is free (at yyz it is not despite charging so much :angry_smile: ) If I were flying to Ind or Europe, it would be one of my choices. And Austrian is a member of star alliance so I can collect Aeroplan miles (Air Canada) too .... Next time, I can take a detour to Vienna, one of the cities I wish to photograph

WestieBuckeye Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Air Canada...never again! One of my first experiences traveling overseas alone was quite an event. I was traveling back to the US from India. All buckled and ready for the plane to start moving, the captain announced that there would be a delay of about 30-45 mins. No biggie... The captain continued saying another 30-45 mins which turned into 6-7 hrs and we still had not left the docking site. With no AC, babies crying, and no food, people were getting antsy. To top things off, after that 6-7 hrs had passed, they told us that the flight would not be taking off as the plane was having technical difficulties (as if we didn't know that already). So spent the entire night in the plane...I wonder why?! They made us get off the plane and the site was something I don't get to see too often unless it's a Hindi movie. Everyone just surrounded the Air Canada manager and started shouting and screaming. I too kinda joined the mob...not that any of this made a difference. Well, I got to have an extra day in Delhi. So, I wasn't too upset in the end!
