Ranatunga also said the International Cricket Council (ICC) is a "toothless tiger" and that the world cricket body is currently under the thumb of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). "I fear for the future of Test cricket. Not too long ago we had individuals like Malcolm Speed, Ehsan Mani and Malcolm Grey who stood against India. But the current ICC is weak and they simply give in. The ICC is becoming a toothless tiger. I have seen this IPL and I must say from the first day I didn't like it. We have created a monster that will go on to destroy international cricket," Ranatunga was quoted as saying in 'The Island'. Sri Lanka's national cricket team, currently touring England, arrived in the UK in four different batches due to their IPL commitments. Some of the team's key players missed a warm-up game. The West Indies, meanwhile, had a weakened side for their Test series against Pakistan due to the IPL that was taking place simultaneously. The World Cup-winning captain said ICC's priorities should be to look after the well-being of the game rather than dancing to the tunes of BCCI. "The ICC's job is to protect the game. They don't have to favour anyone. The game has been nurtured by honourable men of the ICC for decades, but at present, ICC looks to be under the thumb of India," he said. Ranatunga supported former England captain Tony Greig's recent comments that if he had a say in world cricket, he would have prevented India from controlling the ICC. "Hats off to Tony. Everyone these days fear India and no one wants to antagonise the BCCI. Tony is spot on, except for the fact that he has stated Bangladesh and Zimbabwe boards do whatever the Indians want. He should have added Sri Lanka Cricket too. SLC is like a puppet on a string. The job of the ICC is to protect the game rather than any individual country," Ranatunga said. Several ex-cricketers have endorsed a window for the IPL so that there are no international commitments during that period. "It's absolutely ridiculous. If we are going into that, what about if other countries also ask for windows. If you take football, international matches aren't the priority except for the World Cup, which comes once in four years. In football, the glamour is in club tournaments. Are these people going to make cricket a club-based sport too. I feel very sorry and sad at the state of affairs and I hope and pray sanity will prevail," Ranatunga said. "One fault that I see with the ICC at the moment is that most of the directors haven't played the game and the main decisions are taken at the directors' meeting. If you take most of the CEOs of cricket boards, they are past cricketers, but when they come up with suggestions for the well-being of the game, the directors need to support those decisions rather than rejecting them," he said.

If it's the first one, then fine. But if it's the second one, may God bless them all because India has plenty in store for them in the future. Bottom line: LEARN TO LIVE WITH IT!!!!

If any of their fans or administrators want to blame IPL for their loss in the 1st Test, they are out of their minds. The same team in the first innings scored more than 400 runs. Even a team compiled with ICF posters wouldn't have managed to produce that once in a millennium chokejob that their team put up in the 2nd innings.

All cricket board needs to work together with BCCI to survive financially. Why dont Ranatunga goes back to SLC & find ways to make cricket more popular & financially attractive to SLans without India? If he & all other cricket board can do that...then they will stop their dependence on BCCI/IPL & probably make their own successfull T20 league based on IPL structure. I at times dont like BCCI attitude towards other boards. eg BCCI will not release players from Indian Domestic season (not Intl commitment mind you) to play in Aus big bash. Puzzling indeed. IMO...these domestic players can do & learn the Aus experience in that big bash tournament...rather then playing another pointless innings on dead Indian wickets

Guess when it benefitted Lankan, Ranatunga was all for BCCI power. But suddenly all that is forgotten. SOmeone should remind him how pathetic Lanka would have been without Murali had he been banned in early 2000s. Also amusing to see him name Malcolm Speed there, the same guy who as CA's president had comeout in support of that umpire who had barred Murali for chucking. Guess in his hate for BCCI, Ranatunga has forgotten all that happened in the past.

Its a fashion these days to say something about IPL every now and then. If IPL was played in his days, he would have been the first one to jump in the line to get a contract. What a loser.
