Hell NO! Just coz a random site rates his movies higher, it don't mean he is THAT good. Btw, I rate Tarantino, Kiarostami, Haneke, Lynch, the Coen bros, Fincher and Spielberg higher than Nolan among contemporary directors. Or for that matter, Yoshikawa, Yasumitsu, Kawagachi, Honda, Toyota, Nissan

Others contemporaries...Ridley Scott, James Cameron, even Clint Eastwood, Greengrass, Del Toro (), Cronenberg are at least on par...Paul T Anderson maybe...? All of Hitch's movies were thrillers, does it make him an one dimensional director? Your answer to the question is my answer to QT being a stereotypical director. Two thumbs up for Guillermo Del Toro. The man is awesome.

Silva Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 He's a little over rated. Memento and Insomnia where good movies, but I heard the original Norwegian version was much better. Dark Night was good but watch the masterpiece Heat afterwords and you'll understand that Dark night was not as great a movie as people made it out to be. Nolan even admitted to have been inspired by Heat as well. Batman begins is boring as hell the 2nd time you watch it. I though the prestige and Inception where over rated as well. The last truly great movie he made was Memento. And even that had its flaws. He's in the same league as tarentino. Paul wes anderson and the cohen brothers are way better than him. He's the king of making blockbuster movies right now though. But I remember even M Night Shamalan was the king of making those movies for a brief period of time and look how his career ended up.

Stanley Kubrick made movies about abstruse subjects like 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange. He even wrote the screenplay of AI which Spielberg has destroyed by helming that project. But Kubrick's movies are for niche audience and he wasn't as universal in acclaim as nolan Steven Spielberg and James Cameron showed Hollywood how to make contemporary epic movies. Scorcese and Allen make movies for a niche set of audience... Tarantino rips off from vintage B-movies. there is nothing original about his storylines. He is very good in directing conversational and confrontation scenes - in fact he a master at that. There can never be a greatest director. D.W.Griffith who made the racist Birth of a nation is often credited to showing people how to construct scenes and make epic movies. Sure he did not make a movie like "Inception" because he had to work with whatever tools were available to him then. So its unfair to label nolan as the greatest. John Ford and John Houston are considered masters at scene construction and David Lean for shot making. Even Akira Kurosawa was influenced by John Ford's stagecoach before he made 7samurai. Sergio Leone was very much influenced by kurosawa and Tarantino adores Leone. They are all masters... no one is the greatest.
