phaedrus Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 Shikhar Dhawan clearly seems slightly lost and confused out there. How he went from near extinction to default selection in the national XI is anybody’s guess. But, for those who remember, the Shikhar Dhawan we saw during the 2008 IPL seemed to be the real deal. He was genuinely impressive during that edition of the tournament. He just seemed to have that particular mentality required to be a successful LoI batsmen. When I saw him play back then, I really thought we were looking at a definite India prospect. But sadly, something seemed to have happened between then and now and he looks a shadow of his previous self. He may still go on to have a reasonably successful series, but that still doesn’t change th fact that he’s lucky to be in the eleven. I think its fair to say that Murali Vijay should have been our back-up opener for ODIs and T20s, especially on flat pitches. But a combination of luck – The squad for the ODI series was rather bizarrely announced even while the IPL was going on. Vijay wasn’t among the runs during the initial part and exactly one day before the squad was announced Dhawan scored an impressive 90 odd to knock Punjab out. Vijay subsequently ran into a lot of form – and probably the fear in Srikkanth’s mind that if he picked Vijay ahead of anyone else, he will be branded as being partial towards players from his state meant that Dhawan snuck into the squad. +1 Played with great responsibility back then. He has to be given a chance, if he fails kick him out. There are many players in international cricket that arent very pleasing to the eye, our world cup winning captain is one of 'em.

I don't know how much he will score today, but the guy is good enough to be in Indian national side. Screw you guys who talk about technique or he doesn't look international class. You guys don't know how to actually bat I guess. ++

Dhawan is a good batter. And if technique were everything, why is Sehwag playing for India? Why is Dhoni playing for India? Why is Raina playing for India?

I guess because he's primarily an opener and Goddy, Sehwag and Gambhir have been the openers for a long time so there wasn't any spot.

Dhawan made a 124-ball 126, Dhoni crashed 102 off 96 balls, and it was Dhoni who got the India call-up. Both of us scored centuries in that Challenger match in Mumbai and I got a chance to play for India because I was a wicketkeeper-batsman. Silva Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 I kind of like Shikar Dhawan, he's got a strong offside game. Considering he's our 3-4th ODI back up opener his selection isn't outragous at all. Sharma on the other hand should not be getting picked when their are many other players with better list A records then him. Tiwary looks like a more solid Number 5 than Sharma.
