Also people forget that McGrath could get steep bounce and could setup batsman consistently with his movement both the ways. So he was successful even on dead pitches. Munaf is certainly improved but he cannot drop his pace any more and has to also develop the knack of taking wickets on flat pitches (lik insubcontinent), only then he can be called a great bowler.

Jokes apart - agreed he has been a top performer and good supporting act for Zaheer!
Misu243 Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 Sure Munna's spinning phast bowling can be very effective but India needs to start looking for genuine pace to add that extra firepower missing in the bowling unit. I'm really hoping for a good series for Abhimanyu Mithun..with his young age and physique, he should be able to generate extra pace. Ishant Sharma has pace as well...but regularly bowls no balls and sprays them all over the pace. It's time to give young guys like Varun Aaron a chance!!

He doesn't turn it a long way but he turns enough to trouble the batsman.

He never dropped his pace below 130 and used bowl around 135 consistently. His Mcgrath's forte was to bring ball back and then take it away by pitching the exactly the same place which instilled doubts in batsmen's mind. This comparison is not fair at all.

Even M.Asif was in the same league of bowlers. However I agree, in terms of consistency they both are poles apart. Bowlers like McGrath dont just come up like that.

Mc grath used to bowl immaculate line n length and his pace used to vary from 135 K to 145k with a slow ball used as a surprise touching 115 to 125K where as Munaf bowls good ( not immaculate and as good as mc grath) line n length but between 120 to 133K and exceptional balls going upto 136K. there is no 125K baller in the world better than Praveen Kumar as he swings it both ways..and he is way ahead of MUNAF... i would love to play him ahead of Munaf for a test Match as he was a swing BOWLER from day 1 and not just a slow medium pace bowler. I have great hope that Praveen Kumar will always great a break through( 1 to 2 wickets) with the new ball and in a test match , a new ball bowler may get a new ball twice to thrice. To see off Praveen Kumar's first 6 overs without loosing wicket is like getting through ZAK's first 6 overs or even sreesanth's first 6 overs.. I mean PK is as deadly as an indian in his first 6 new ball overs. Munaf.. i feel any batsmen who is calm n cool and wanna save his wicket can handle MUNAF better than PK against the new ball. PK's bowling and his swing fades away after first 6 to 8 overs, thats when Munaf becomes a better bowler then him bcos of his Bounce.. i expect ISHANT to suceed.

Playing PK may work only upto a point of time. He would become more or less like a Matthew Hoggard who used to bowl only when the ball was new. After that he was more or less a liability with his low pace and lack of mastery on reverse swing. I remember Wasim Akram once saying that you judge a fast bowler by the way he bowls in the post tea session,more because by that time the pitch is not that helpful for the bowlers and generally the ball is not going to do too much.And that's where PK would not help matters. And yes if Ishant succeeds then its a rosy picture.
