NareshK Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 I did watch the game in the first session (even am late for work because of that) and I started this thread after watching it The guys who aren't agreeing are probably the ones who think: Sree ---> Bad T20 option----> he leaks runs Sree ----> Bad ODI option ----> he leaks runs Sree ----> Bad test option ----> he leaks runs Good captains would be even willing to give 100 runs in the first session in order to pick up 3-4 wkts. Playing a wildcard is a part of that risk if you have an attack like ours (mainly dependent on Zak). If economy is such a concern, get dartbhajan to throw darts or get someone to bowl way outside so the batsman doesn't play at those. The idea here is to get the batsman to play the shots to induce a catch, if a bowler goes for runs in that process its fine. This is test cricket. Containment should only come into play once a partnership gets going and the bowlers don't seem to be using the conditions well. And we have bowlers who can look to contain. What India lacks is someone who can win you a session in this conditions So far its all Zak who is doing all the work. We need bowlers who can pick up wkts too to support Zak Its not just economy. Its important to keep the pressure on batsmen so the other bowler like Zaheer can take wickets. Do you think Strauss would have played that shot if he got easy runs off Praveen or some other bowler ? He found the runs hard to come by and the pressure was building on him and that's when there is a chance to play a bad shot. Bowling wide of the wicket or having a defensive field is not the same as keeping the pressure on the batsman with a good, tight testing spell as Praveen has done. I'm not sure Sree could do that consistently. He may well have got carried away with the occasion today as he does so frequently and bowled poorly which could have costed India badly. Sree is not such a good bowler that you can take a chance with him having a bad day. He may have bowled well and taken wickets on some occasions but he has never proved he is consistent enough.

Ok, Zak got his wkt because of PK's bowling in the first session .... PK And Sree would have given 70 runs in 9 overs and Eng would have been 52 runs more. Can you name a more proven performer than Sreeshanth who is capable of replacing him. The three games he won for us was against top class opposition in SL and SA .Isn't that good enough? How many games has PK won in ODI's with his deadly bowling.Obviously he has had more cricket despite playing different formats than Sree in the last few years. Yes,as I said Sree is erratic but we have to take a gamble with the current crop of bowling talent we have and that includes seamers and spinners.

Is no malcom marshall and ishant is no garner,he averages 40 to be exact and that is due toflatbeds he has played on .fact is he is a match winner and light years better than kumar who should not be even in the team
Ultimate_Game Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 The problem with PK is that he may not be able to pick wkts against defensive players like Trott, Cook, Strauss etc., i.e. the sort of players who are happy to see off the good balls and capitalize on bad balls. You do need some pace to play on batsmana's mind. I am not saying you gotta be 90mph+ but surely as a pace bowler you gotta be around 80mph or thereabouts. PK is good in odis as batsmen have to take risks to score runs and that's where PK's line, length and swing gets him wkts.
