This is a spin-off from the fitness post, but focuses on cardio fitness. One of my colleagues is pushing 70, and is in impeccable shape. He runs multiple miles a day, eats well but healthy, and leads a very active lifestyle (travel, hike, bike, swim ...). A few weeks ago, he started to experience some cardiac symptoms; after a battery of tests, he was diagnosed with a rare cardiac lymphoma. There was a tumor on his heart, and the tumor itself was the 3/4 the size of his heart. It had invaded his cardiac tissues and pushed one of his heart valves out of place. The doctors were (pleasantly) shocked that his heart was still functioning. He is now responding well to chemotherapy. All of his years of staying in keeping good cardiac health paid off. So, put your running shoes on and take care of that heart!

Cardio is Awesome! For the longest time I have hated it but boy it is freaking good. Great to hear about the gentlemen maintaining a nice health regime, looks like it paid off.

Even back in the day when I exercised, it was all weights. Cardio was only to warm up. But, it's been 6.5 years since I have regularly exercised ... I watch what I eat, but it's time to go (run) back.

Meh...elliptical or treadmill doesn't even close to compare to the feeling of running outdoors...especially if you have some 'nature' around where you live...anyways, its not about losing weight, more abt getting your heart a workout.

You simply cannot do that with running as it is a high impact exercise. If you are worried about knee pain elliptical rider is a great choice. I have knee issues hence i prefer elliptical rider.

That is the main reason why I always prefer elliptical over treadmill. And its relatively easier to switch speeds (& resistance), on treadmill it takes time for speeds (& inclination) to go up/down. Btw, you can still try this on treadmill - maximum inclination and fast paced walking - goes easy on knees and you can maintain high HR forever.

Good share. Also, from my experience - whenever I am regular on cardio, all the choti-moti inconveniences like - dandruff, allergies etc. go away magically. When I am not regular, I have allergy issues at least 2 times a week, and am left with no option but to resort to anti-histamines- to which I have slowly developed resistance too and now have to take more than 2-3 pills. Also one of my friend had low BP & sinus issues and once he become regular at exercising and lost good amount of weight, his BP returned to normalcy and sinus went away.

^^ Just to add on to something, I used to have a big cist in my head. Have had it for 4-5 years for now. After I started working, it got smaller and smaller, considerably. It's only a little bit left now. I'm still contemplating on whether to get surgery or not.

I think cardio has been given the wrong end of the stick by many weight training buffs. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love strength training and actually think it's far more fun than cardio, which can get a bit humdrum and monotonous at times.. but I'm pretty much a living example of what cardio can do for you, provided you do it alongside lifting weights. I used to go for my regular morning walks up until last year, when I suddenly lost interest and found myself finding it unable to wake up that early. It had a lot to do with my schedule and going through severe and manic depression. I'd just stopped giving a damn about life. I decided to turn things around again a few months ago, but I got contact dermatitis recently due to some f**king allergen. There isn't a park or a lovely open space here where I can enjoy walking or jogging, so I joined the gym, and it's worked wonders. The cardio not only elevated my mood, but also curbed the pathetic side effects of the steroids I was put on for my condition. I can safely say steroids are one of the worst medications even though they may be potent, because I ended up suffering from acid reflux, even worse depression, bronchitis, screwed up digestion... and just feeling like a hot air balloon due to water retention. I guess it depends on how much your body can cope with steroids though... mine didn't. The moment I started upping my cardio levels, all these problems waned, not to mention the facial pigmentation that was leftover due to my CD also faded significantly. Though I have to say weight training has also played a huge, huge part in making me feel more upbeat... exercise has been the best remedy for my depression. I've never had to depend on meds thanks to it.

The doctor did tell me though that it could get bigger and cause problems in the long run but it's pretty benign as of now. It doesn't hurt or cause any problems.

for those who hate cardio and boring running and cycling..playing some sports like soccer or tennis or swimming is much better..i like the competitive spirit that sport brings..allowing me to push myself. also sprinting is much better than jogging ..if u can manage it. and running outside is much better for ur body than in the gym. gym running is good for weight loss but nothing like burning the asphalt for cardiovascular fitness and building muscle and joint strength

Swimming is obviously THE BEST exercise that gives a complete work out. If you are afraid of chlorine try Jump rope. Jump rope is one of the toughest cardio work out. It moves every muscle.
