So why didn't they send him as back up wk instead of Saha for the test series?
Zonal selection policy and trying to manage so many candidates from diferent zones..The selectors have to keep everybody happy..

Infact, he should have been selected for the test team as well in place of Saha. He had already played tests in England in 2002 tour and we needed a backup opener since Viru was not playing first 2 tests. He was in good nick in WI tour. Although he doesnt score huge runs, his 30-40 runs would have been vital. He could have opened in the second test.

His current batting form is better than that of Dhoni also and gives a shot at opening. He deserves it. That does not mean that Saha should not get an opportunity either.

He came back during the series against NZ and later went to SA and the WI. He hasn't done badly to be dropped. However, there is a question mark over his long-term value since he is useful only as an opener and even at that position he cannot convert starts. He keeping was terrible in the WI as well.

I am glad all the above posts were in favor of P.Patel.. Parthiv is actually a very underrated batsman and should be kept as our first choice backup opener if Sehwag/Gambhir r injured

Also, when most of our bats failed in South Africa. He along with Virat Kohli looked in superb touch. We lost the series. but do check out his knock. He played some great shots of steyn and looked at ease. Also he plays those so called "Short deliveries" pretty well. I remember him playing one of those hook shots to Steyn in Saf tour recently before world cup. Good to see him back. Might not get a game though but if we win the series in first 4 games, we can definately give him one game there.
