Why are we so trigger-happy when it comes to being offended? She probably meant it in a sarcastic way. But quite honestly, what a dumb thing to say in a public forum.

But quite honestly' date=' what a dumb thing to say in a public forum.[/quote'] 1) It is a dumb thing to say in public for sure. 2) How can any foreign bureacrat make such a statement in a host country? 3) How can a bureacrat make such a statement in a college reception in the host country? Maybe it was meant as a humor? But if so, was she exploiting the sentiments that happens to be prevalent in the region? I mean if she would have made the statement in Calcutta, say, people would have looked at each other with a WTF? Simply because they wouldnt know how most Tamilians look like. On the other hand I have heard that line spoken between Bangaloreans, and Kannadigas in general, that they are 'whiter" than Tamilians. If this university is somewhere in Karnataka, or even AP, there may be a reason why a comment was made at the cost of Tamil populace. Would be very surprised if this University is in Chennai say. I dont know, just saying. As always a foreigner will hide behind the cloak of "humor" and possibly survive by exploiting the divide that exists within India.

People makes gaffes, that is a FACT of life. Dont we all say stupid, inappropriate things at times? I cant imagine any foreign bureaucrat saying such a thing in public, intending for it to be a serious comment. She probably tried to be funny in front an audience, and ended up failing miserably.

The regrettable part was that she made the comments in an official capacity. A person in her position should have known better. The dirty part was more to describe the colour of the skin rather than the people themselves. Regarding the comments, I have heard far more worse comments uttered by our people as well.

She tried to be humorus and failed misreably. Any way, a black guy can call another blacy guy N-word but if a white guy uses it he'll probably get shot. Ya, Tamalians are colour crazy. The first thing they say when describe a new baby or a bride its how fair they are. As a diplomat she should have taken time and researched about the people's sentiment before making personal jokes. You can go to Alabama and make redneck jokes all day long and get away with it but people get touchy when someone makes black jokes.
