Former captain Kapil Dev on Tuesday lashed out at the Indian players for lacking team spirit in the ongoing Test series against England and also criticised senior cricketers for not motivating the youngsters in the team. The former all-rounder, who led India to its maiden World Cup title in 1983, slammed DhoniÃÔ men for ÅÈoing through the motion more than their love for the game during the ongoing four-match series which England have already pocketed 3-0. Ūndian players did not play as a team. I am not trying to blame anybody but I think they played too much cricket. Within four days of winning the World Cup you play IPL. They then travel to West Indies for a tour and then from there to England. I think our players were going through the motion more than their love for the game? Kapil told PTI in an interview. Asked whether there were any other reason for the humiliating defeat against England which has dislodged India from the number one position, Kapil said the seniors have not played a role in guiding the youngsters during the tour. ůo cricketer walked up to young bowlers to advise them on what line to bowl. Dhoni could go up to Ishant and tell this. Media termed him as äaptain Cool He says everybody should know their job. Ūn Indian sports, we have not reached that level where all the players know what they should do. We still look up to captain and senior players. We need somebody with aggression. All the senior players have become so senior that they do not want to be aggressive? he said.

Kapil Dev slams Dhoni and seniors for not motivating youngsters Former captain Kapil Dev today lashed out at the Indian players for lacking team spirit in the ongoing Test series against England and also criticised senior cricketers, including captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar, for not motivating the youngsters in the team. The former all-rounder, who led India to its maiden World Cup title in 1983, slammed Dhoni's men for going through the motion more than their love for the game during the ongoing four-match series which England have already pocketed 3-0. “Indian players did not play as a team. Asked whether there were any other reason for the humiliating defeat against England which has dislodged India from the number one position, Kapil said the seniors have not played a role in guiding the youngsters during the tour. “No cricketer walked up to young bowlers to advise them on what line to bowl. Dhoni could go up to Ishant and tell this. Media termed him as 'Captain Cool'. He says everybody should know their job. In Indian sports, we have not reached that level where all the players know what they should do. We still look up to captain and senior players. We need somebody with aggression. All the senior players have become so senior that they do not want to be aggressive,” he said.

some question and answers

Q: What is your take on Dhoni and team spirit? Kapil: Everybody go ga ga about Sachin Tendulkar that 'I learn from him and so on'. If you ask Virender Sehwag who is your guru he will say Sachin. If you ask Yuvraj, he will say Sachin. But I have never seen Sehwag or Sachin or Laxman, with their bundle of experience in batting, walking up to the bowlers to advise them the correct line to bowl. I do not know whether I am making sense or not. But in my opinion, the new theory in Indian cricket is that bowlers have to work themselves and batsmen need to do everything by themselves. The required guidance is not there. May be I cannot see that what they talk about. I was not on the ground or in the dressing room. My observations are totally based on what I see on television.
Q: Are the Indian cricketers too tired now ? Kapil: No. Not tiredness. When you play well there is nothing like you are tired. When you don't play well then all those negative thinking sets in your mind. England played very good cricket, perhaps it is after 15 or 20 years that England looks like an English team in every sense. The difference between England and India is that England has great all-rounders, who can bat in between and bowl well. They have two or three such cricketers in their team. They are the trump cards in their team and they are the strength. From 80 for eight they were good enough to make 250 or 270. Unfortunately our team looked totally lost because we do not have a single all-rounder.
Q: Do you think the selectors should have given rest to some of the players by picking youngsters who had played for India earlier? Kapil: If players are injured, what can you do. All such questions are raised when we fail to perform. If youngsters are given chances and still we lose, you would ask why Sachin or Rahul are not played and why all youngsters to England. Such arguments will become endless. It is easy to talk all these things from outside. Easiest thing in this world is to do post-mortem.
Q: Do you think the conditions in England were to the disadvantage of India? Kapil: The bottomline for the series loss is that the English bowlers were attuned to their job and they bowled together and did not give up their goals. We have five cricketers who have on average played more than 15 Tests in English conditions and they have not delivered.
Q: Any other reason for India's poor performance? Kapil: The sad part throughout the series was that on the second day of a Test, Dhoni was bowling. I am not saying whether should he bowl or not. But, the situation when he bowled was different when you are having four bowlers. You are not playing in the sub-continent where after 70 or 80 overs you can say light is bad and match could be called off. We have to play 90 overs and all the main bowlers have to bowl minimum 20 overs each. Are they used to bowl 20-overs each? Unfortunately, they are not used to. If one bowler is injured then other main bowlers should bowl at least 25 overs each. Then the captain has to call the all-rounder to bowl for a brief period. In the past, Sehwag or Ganguly used to bowl when the pressure was less. Neither them nor Sachin could bowl 20 overs on the trot.
Q: Why India did not cash in on the chances they got? Kapil: We did get our chances. In the second Test also, we had a chance but we did not avail those chances. We were totally lost and England outplayed us in every department. Q: The blame game has started and who do you think is responsible for the debacle? Kapil: I do not want to get in to that. Only thing is that these boys are good enough and they are still doing well. As long as they can play, we should support them. I think that that call has to be taken by the Board and the selectors. Q: What is your advise to the players? Kapil: Ten years ago, I said to Sachin to enjoy his game. He has said to newspapers that he is enjoying his game. But according to me he is enjoying his game only during the last two years. I think Sachin played his best cricket during the last two years. His knocks were unparallelled in the manner in which he set new records. Had he not been enjoying his game, there would have been few runs but his approach to the game would have been different. Now I can see that he is enjoying. So, it is entirely up to him to decide as to what to do and achieve it too.
Q: What do you think is needed in order to reduce the number of matches played by India in a season? Kapil: The fixture of four years is already set. I had talked to Rajiv Shukla on this and he says that the players are at liberty to take rest whenever they require to. But, nobody would like to take rest because they are unsure of their place in the team if they opt out as the next player would seal his berth. It is for the Board to decide as to how much cricket that they want to give to players. Q: What is your view on setting norms for becoming Selection Panel members that he should have played for India? Kapil: I think it is not a bad idea to set some qualification norms for such posts. It always gives you better results. People who have played for the country also deserve to be in the other posts in the Board.

I don't agree with this part. Every time Sachin has fielded on midon, he has gone to the bowlers after every ball. For my liking, Sachin has overdone it.

This is quite true actually. I have seen Sachin field at mid-on and constantly egging on the bowlers working with them etc in the past but increasingly this is not happening. Holds true for other seniors as well. Not sure if it is tiredness, or age, or both.

Kapil worried about injury-prone Zaheer's longevity

Former Indian captain Kapil Dev does not foresee Zaheer Khan spearheading the team's attack for a very long time as he feels a fast bowler getting injured at the wrong side of age has to do something “extraordinary to come back”. “If a fast bowler starts getting injured at the wrong side of age, the recovery is very difficult. He would have to do something extraordinary to come back, otherwise he would play a few matches and get injured again,” said Kapil, who took 434 Test wickets from 131 Tests with his fast-medium swing bowling. Zaheer has served India in 79 Tests and taken 273 wickets yet he is hardly able to go through a Test series without an injury, the latest instance being the one during the first Test at Lord's in July. There are many who also see Sachin Tendulkar nearing the end of his one-day career -- he is sitting out of the ongoing one-day series because of a toe injury -- due to his advancing age and preference for Test cricket. Kapil, though, believes Tendulkar's case is different to Zaheer. “With a batsman, it's different. Sachin can make a comeback. He has already done everything, there's nothing left. The one century (remaining) would come anyway. “Sachin has to make up his mind what he wants to do. He knows his body and he alone can answer how good he feels. People like us who are sitting outside can't comment on it.” While on individuals, Kapil's concern also extended to Gautam Gambhir whom he regards as a brilliant batsman. Gambhir recently suffered a head injury during the Test series. “Gambhir's an exceptional batsman. But such kind of injury could have a defining effect on his career. Head injuries such as this can affect the balance and coordination (of limbs),” Kapil said. India's disastrous campaign in the Test series in England has brought the role of coach Duncan Fletcher into question. Kapil, in reply, poses a question of his own. “Tell me one thing, if Gary Kirsten was really that great with the Indian team, the team ought not to have done so badly within a few months of his departure. “He would have left the basics in place. So if Kirsten didn't play any role in India's rise, so Fletcher should also not be blamed for India's debacle.” India's bowling resources look more barren with a pacer like RP Singh being recalled to boost the bench strength after being in wilderness for over three years. Kapil found fault in the way the Indian fast bowlers have been training in the recent past. “We have produced so many fast bowlers in the last 15 years. But unfortunately, everyone has met with injuries. Being overworked is one thing. But they have also spent a lot of time in the gym rather than on the field. “They are not doing enough running, cross country, looking to make their legs stronger. Most of the fast bowlers I have seen have a much stronger upper than lower body, the feet and legs. “There's this new theory of not bowling enough in the nets. They are not bowling for longer hours at the nets. The more you bowl, the more you learn, the more your body get attuned to the task. I now see bowlers bowl on 4-5 overs in nets,” he said. Kapil reckoned that it was not possible to become a good cricketer simply by sitting in the dressing room or in front of a computer. “You don't become a cricketer, sitting in the dressing room or in front of computer, or watching footage on television. It's important to go to basics, do a lot of training and hard work. If you can do it, it would help you play for long periods. “Playing for India is not a big thing. But can you play for 10 years? That takes a lot of hard work.” The former cricketer was a model of fitness and didn't miss a single Test during his long career due to injury. “God was kind to me. I did get injuries but I got them in off-season. Unfortunately, today's cricketers don't have off-season. Everybody is greedy to make that bit extra. I hope we learn, players learn, administrators learn for cricket is becoming relentless these days.” Kapil said he wants somebody to crack the whip on fast bowlers who were opting for softer options and not working hard enough. “As I said, you have to bowl enough. When they lose pace and don't apply themselves, the dressing room has to be ruthless. They have to be brought out of their comfort level.” Kapil gave credit to England for their stupendous win in the Test series. “England was fantastic. After so many years, they can claim to have a team at this stage. They can beat anybody. “As for Indian cricketers, they didn't get enough time to unwind themselves after the World Cup win. Within four days, they were playing in the IPL. If they had time, they could have done better. Everything wrong came together at the same time.” Kapil didn't begrudge players making money from the IPL but emphasised they also needed to look at the bigger picture. “Making money is an incentive. It's not a negative thing. If you can make so much money in a month, it's fine. But you need to realize you have to perform in other formats as well.” For India to recover their status, Kapil wanted a plan for a longer duration to be put in place. “They have to put their heads together. Long term planning is a must. Short term gains won't help. We should look at how we ought to be in 10 years' time.”

Srinath blamed KD for not giving him good advice when he started his career. WHatever Srinath developed was on his own effort even though KD had 15 years of bowling experience.
Very right indeed. That's why I am always a bit skeptical whenever KD speaks. He strecthed his career to get his 434th wicket and he advises others to retire and not go after records. There was another budding fast bowler then named subrito banerjee but he failed because of no guidance. Srinath could have been easily a 300+ bowler but fir the lack of guidance especially from KD.

Srinath missed out 2-3 years of International cricket just because a certain Kapil was hellbent upon breaking hadlee's record. And wasnt Kapil Dev the coach of India when India lost the series in Australia similarly , I think in 2000 ?

Dhoni ki khol ke rakh di. I think Virat Kohli would make a great Indian captain.

Couldnt agree more. Srinath and Kapil played 12 tests together. Srinath netting 33 wickets @ 36 and Kapil 39 @28.This included a series down under where Kapil took 25 in 5 tests. Kapil should have dropped himself and let Srinath play instead since the youngster was netting worse returns and going for runs handsomely. :hatsoff::hatsoff:

^^It was not about comparitive performance. Srinath claimed of not getting any advice/motivation/guidance from KD. Newbie ofcourse will not perform as much as 15+years experience bowler. I didnt claim that KD didn't deserve his place. Srinath is nippy and needs a new ball. In the first 2 years, the new ball was held by KD and Prabhakar. THe first time Srinath got the newball was after 11 tests in NZ where his figures were: J Srinath 31 8 60 4 1.93 N Kapil Dev 9 2 29 1 3.22

Its a tough world, get used to it. The first couple of Test matches that Kapil played in his career, he opened bowling with Mohinder Amarnath and Sunil Gavaskar. Atleast Srinath had Kapil and Prabhakar by his side. I am yet to ever see Kapil lament about lack of support and/or complain about how no seniors ever helped him out. If anything he complains how senior batsmen didnt allow him to cut loose (he bounced West Indies batsmen and the Indian bats were scared that this would start the bumper war). Heck this may be the reason why Kapil rarely used bouncer in his entire career. To have Srinath complain about lack of advise just shows him as a crybaby, which he frankly was to an extent. Great bowler, great pace but always seemed to lack heart. xxx
