f.b.m Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Ok before all of you sneer at my naivete, I'd like to present all my ideas in a 'just a thought' mode. Everything about 20/20 cricket suggests overkill: A World cup every year, 94 IPL matches a year, even the whining of the old-timers that T20 will take over test cricket is getting tiresome. Apparently the crowds and the interest in T20 in England and South Africa are dying, not that I know much about these tournaments. I'm not sure about the details of IPL ratings, but I don't remember seeing too many packed stadiums. There might be other reasons for the IPL's relative decline (10 teams, world cup hangover, etc) but there might just be a general trend here. Leaving aside the ratings and the interest, why exactly does 20/20 appeal to people in the first place? It is supposed to be a form of cricket for the kind of people who have the attention span of a beheaded cockroach. The IPL might have gone further than the other T20 tournaments by uniting the family into watching just one TV channel for a while. The dad can leave the test cricket or tennis (or whatever it is that cricketics watches), the mom can leave the silly soaps and the kids can leave the cartoons to watch a mixture of the three called the IPL (ps: stereotypes, where would I be without you?). But broadly the people I know who follow 20/20 cricket fall into two categories: People who see it as a novelty and long time cricket followers who will watch (and play) any form of cricket that's out there anyway. It seems inevitable that at some point, the novelty of 20/20 will wear off for the curious onlookers and the actual cricket followers will get sick of it (well I am anyway, nothing to do with 4-0). I speak with experience of going to nets with guys who are new to cricket. These aren't people from one particular country (Canadian, Dutch, Japanese, Czech, etc) but there's one common denominator: no one cares about 20/20. All of them got into cricket by watching ODIs and in a span of a year, enjoy test cricket too! Thats all the rambling for this thread. Let the coherent posts commence!

But more it has beep played, we have seen plenty of one sided contest. the interest has gone down. Even first IPL was big hit, because of novelty factor...ppl whwere wondering how can Ganguly and Ponting play for same team...How can Warne and Smith be part of same setup... Interest has certainly gone down. Now since india won the ODI world cup, ppl will start following that again....IPL has to cut down in number of matches and make it more competitive if it has to survive.
Pagalpanti Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 T20 is here to stay, if at all any format is in danger imo its ODI's as test is completely different. ODI is pretty much similar to T20. T20 will never lose its charm or viewership, even when IPL was played in SA it got more crowd than any test match in SA has seen.
Cricketics Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 It is is cricket definitely and one can curse it as much as they want, no one can deny that it has brought more fans than ever. Everything has some drawback, and the 2020 perhaps have more than just 1. I don't mind watching bit of 2020, but too much makes want to stay away from it. Though when the game is going on and am at work, I would still try to watch or atleast keep openign a cricbuzz/cricinfo app on my cellphone to check latest scores. It's that addictive sometimes. The game last just abo ut 3 hours 3 minutes. Half of what a regular ODI does. Hence people love it or appreciate it.

yoda Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 20/20 is popular for one simple reason - it ends in a sane amount of time, typical for most sporting events. Expecting people to waste away 5 days of their time to watch the game in the purest form is for lazy asses who have nothing better to do with their time. A busy pro would rather catch an evening game for 3 hours than fapping at a forward defensive stroke or a well left outside the off for 5 days. It also makes a good way for friends to gather for an evening of cricket or a company to throw an office party for execs, endless possibilities simply because it takes a SANE amount of time.

Are people in England and Australia completely jobless to turn up or be interested in test matches?

That is one thing i never understand. india has full of facebook addicts who spend hours and hours on facebook. It was lot harder those days.

Many people who watch cricket dont really care about a great spell or good technique of a batsmen. Its the fours, sixes, run outs, catches, close finishes they want and T20s delivers that in droves and in 3 hours as compared to 5 days in a test. Think of T20 like a mindless action blockbuster and a test match to a black and white classic and an ODI to an entertaining matinee. Each has its place.

A World Cup every year? And I guess it depends on how you want to watch it. If you want to watch it because you enjoy sixes, then yeah it's going to get boring after a while. But as a Pakistani fan, seeing the likes of Ajmal, Gul, and Afridi go up against batsmen who are hell bent on hitting them for 6 on every ball is exciting.
