What about festivals like Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi where people spend millions bursting crackers, building idols and submerge them into water which will again lead to water pollution, noise pollution and air pollution. All the money and food could have been instead donated to poor, isnt it ? Now dont tell me its a festival and tradition and all. These festivals could instead be celebrated much more quietly and economically. But instead we choose to over spend and waste a lot of money just for our amusement and ego. But I also understand at the end of the day, its the choice of people and this is a free country. Same thing with this event, its up to people what they spend their money on and nobody has the rights to tell them otherwise unless they are breaking some kind of law. Don't tell me you can't see the difference between throwing tomatoes and bursting fire crackers.

Mariyam Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 This thread is not about whether the govt is doing enough to stop this, rather about the mad idea of throwing a vegetable at each other in the name of fun. Regarding Mariyam's point about wasting food in marriages, it is not exactly the same. Food does gets wasted all the time, but when you have an event whose entire theme is based on wasting food, it is something which can't be condoned. I'm not condoning the wastage. Lol. As for marriages, the quantity of food wasted day in day out is much more than what happens in a pseudo Tomatina festival once a year in one city. The intention may not be to waste, but wastage still occurs. Why should the government stop what a few people decide to do with tomatoes that they buy? This is not the Soviet Union. What next will you propagate? That the government fine you for wastage when you don't finish the food on your plate at home. :P

If 1000 odd kids in Bangalore think they want to pay 1,000 bucks each to play Tomatina, they must go ahead and do that. All this hysteria is funny. Also, a few months back, it was advised that the food in marriages must be limited and they should submit the list of number of guests that are attending a meal, so that the govt. (of Maharashtra, I guess) could keep a tab on the food wastage. Needless to say, everyone was up in arms against this and the govt. was forced to let it go. So how is wasting food in the name of marriage fine and not in the name of tomatina? Playing tomatina is a choice people have to make. Many of us wouldn't go to play it. But then, on what grounds are you going to stop people from doing what they please? Using this morality argument is a bit vague and shows lack of acceptance of the liberty that people have in making choices.

But since its our own festival, people do love celebrating it. On the other hand, the festival in question is one which is not ours and we are trying to copy the Western Culture, its absolutely fine if there is no wastage. The festival there is celebrated mainly to throw out the excess produce of tomatoes in the country, here we are talking about India, where many people die of hunger. And hence we are saying that it shouldn't be celebrated. It simply looks silly to be honest.

About 400 mio go to sleep hungry. This is one of those IPL V/S India issues ( relatively trivial of course ). One of Antilla V/S Poverty issues. One of those Rights V/S what is right issue. If few years down the line my children were to partake in something like this I would be totally :mad: But the wider point is: The people who buy those tomatoes have a right to use them as they so wish. As long as they are not a nuisance to others. And given an opportunity I will defend that right of theirs to use the tomatoes as they wish, even if what they do with the tomatoes is outright disgusting and callous. If you scroll to the first page of this thread, you can see what I had proposed about price slabs when you buy food items in bulk. I empathize with the poor hungry guy on the road who watches the Tomatina. I would never participate in it. But if some one doesn't empathize with that poor fellow, there is nothing you or me can do about it. Everyone is not as altruistic as you.
