goose Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 I'm learning to play the tabla! I do have some natural flair, but after my first lesson (learning hand movements) i feel this could take a long long time to get the hang of! Maybe i should try the bongos instead, or the dhol. Anyone tried to learn either of these? I'm really struggling with Ghe!

Ram Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 I used to play the triple bongo during college.. Nothing fancy, but at a very amateur level (inter-college music fests and the likes). It doesnt take much to play that, to be honest. You dont actually need anyone to teach you to play that, just a basic rhythm sense is enough.

I live in a studio where I can hear neighbors talking..but electric drums would be ok. :nice:

Shehezaada Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 way to go Goose! I learned tabla for about 6 years, stopped when I was 19. For the Gh, Gha, Ghe, picture your hand like a snake. The middle and ring fingers are like fangs, and then you strike the skin of the bada tabla and curl your fingers. For the first two weeks, it helps to tape your middle and ring fingers together on your left hand, and the thumb and index on your right (if that's the fundamental your guru has taught you, to keep them together)
