Neena Gupta, KK Raina etc. Almost a row was occupied by them and Neena Gupta was at the end sat across from my aisle. I had more fun watching them ooh and aah at Jack Nicholson & Helen Hunt. It was probably one of my first movies in a Mumbai theatre and was a sea change watching TV artists clapping at Jack Nicholson, while back home I would be out of my seat throwing chawani-athani at the parda. From whatever i could see Neena Gupta is fairly decent looking. Not awesome or anything but not an eyesore either.

maniac Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 I am kinda surprised and happy at the same time that not too many people mentioned Satyajit Ray's movies...Infact his movies are the reflection of what the 'intellectual 'brains in the west think about our country by getting their dose about poverty porn. I am sure he has made good movies as well that cater to indian audiences but I am just indicating what he is famous for. Please add Mira Nair,Deepa Mehta etc to this category,most over-rated filmakers ever.

Not too many people mention these two movies. All time classic and great? Ummm no. Very hard hitting and gripping movies, you bet. Loved Angaar. It is supposedly loosely based on a few folks from Mumbai Underworld, Jackie plays the role of Amar Naik, Kader Khan borrows from Karim Lal and Haaji mastaan. Kader Khan has a great role, this came at a time when he was doing 3rd class comedy with Shakti Kapur, so it was lovely to watch him speak chaste Urdu, and sometimes Pashto. Mazhar Khan has a good role too. Nana was his usual crazy self. Jackie carried the angry young man role nicely. Dimple was terrific as the bumbling short on confidence gal. Ending was a piece of whatever. But the movie was top class. I still watch it every now and then.

Probably the best gangster movie ever done (I rate it ahead of Parinda). Specially if you like realistic gangster movie with brooding music in backdrop. No faltoo ka nautanki where the hero romances the heroine bewda maar ke. Its fun to watch Satya. Even small timers have blink-and-you-miss shot. There is this shot where Jagga goes to a bar where Satya works and his boss tells Jagga. Notan kya chillar ke wande hain, saala poora dhanda ghus gaya hai, sawaan mein koich aata hi nahin. Didnt Anurag Kashyap and Saurabh Shukla write Satya? They did a marvellous job.
Mariyam Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 In no particular order: Naya Daur: I saw this movie a few years ago, when it was re-released in colour. It seems all the more relevant now. In a nut shell, its the story of how unplanned modernization and blind rush for profits does more harm than good. Dilip Kumar essays the role of a tangewalla in turmoil with his peers and the society brilliantly. OP Nayyar's music is also memorable: "Yeh desh hai veer jawanon ka" & "Saathi haath badhana"are my favourites. Khamoshi: The only time I actually liked a Nana Patekar movie. :P His rendition of a deaf and mute, but proud Goan is heart warming. Brings tears to your eyes every time you see the movie. The ending sequence is one of the 'sentiest' scenes in Bollywood. Andaz Apna Apna: Its the kind of movie that you can watch without any preamble or reason. You can watch it from the middle and yet have a good time. "Teja main hoon kyun ki mera naam bhi teja hai"" The Apu Triology: I consider this as a single movie.Pather Panchali, Aparajito and Apur Sansar. :hatsoff: Satyajit Ray. Haven't seen anyone else capture the helplessness and innocence of a commoner as he does. In fcat, early 1900 Bengal has produced some very great literary and cinematic geniuses. Tagore, Sarat Chandra Upadhyay, Madhusudan Dutt & Satyajit Ray are all products of a period of Benagli renaissance. DDLJ: Can't have an all time Indian movie list without mentioning the most romantic movie to ever come out of India. It set the trend for many such movies. Ushered in the age of innocent romance in Bollywood. Great music, dialogues and acting all around. Deewar, Mr. India, Jagte Raho, Yaadon ki Baarat & Chak de India to complete my top 10. Other worthwhile mentions: Dil se, Anand, Shwas, Taare Zameen Par, Black, Mughal-e-Azam, Guide

It has a good story, great acting, nice music and great lyrics. Guide touched many topics that seems so far ahead of its times. Waheed Rehman, for example, played a trophy wife whose hubby is far more interested in architecture than her. And when Waheeda Rehman finally opens up, it is a treat to hear the lyricist Shailendra capture her state of mind with a Kaanton se kheench ke ye aanchal, tod ke bandhan baandhe paayal... The song almost sieems to start in mid-way and for the reason that Waheeda Rehman is all ready to cut loose. Terrific. When people say language is a language they miss out on subtelities.

Nasser and Om puri, directed by Govind Nihalani when he was branching out to do quasi-commercial movies. I liked him better in the Ardh-Satya/Party mold tho. Oh yeah absolutely. So he went to noted playwright Vijay Tendulkar, the man who had penned the script and dialogues for the cult classic Ardh Satya. But Tendulkar was unwell, and hence Saurabh Shukla, who also got to play Kallu Mama in the film, got the job. Kashyap and Shukla went to Varma's farmhouse in Hyderabad where they spent the next few days writing what "looked and sounded like a script," before returning to Mumbai.[6] Now, RGV is sorrunded by talentless hacks of yes-men, he has lost it, sadly.

Sometimes if you look carefully at the credits his name pops up. For example, Musafir (Sanjay Dutt and Anil Kapoor) had his background music. Speaking of Musafir I liked that movie too, songs were mast. Thanks for the info on Anuragh Kashyap. He had a funny anecdote about grammar correction by Gulzar. You may like this. Goli maar song had a different version..it wentgham ke neeche bam laga ke gham uda de?.sung to the same tune..Gulzaar sahab wroteb goli Maar?.we all including Ramu and Vishal prefeered the GHAM version..but who would tell it to Gulzar sahab..i was known to be blunt, so they chose me to tell it to Gulzar sahab..next meeting with him ..they took me along ..and i said gum work nahin karta and he said,Gum nahin gham,Pehle bolna seekho and I was out of discussion..everyone agreed to Goli maar and thank god they did..what a song.. http://anuragkashyap.tumbhi.com/uncategorized/satya-the-true-story-part-2-239

Satya blew your mind yes, but I found Company more enjoyable on repeat viewing. Also the fact that it tried to romanticize gangsters did not help. Company didnt take sides and showed everything the way it is.

Dhanda hai par ganda hai ye...thats a lovely gangster number. Aside from that I wouldnt rate Company ahead of Satya. By the way Coffee saab Dhanda hai par ganda hai ye is Sandeep Chowtha.

Satya,Company,Rangeela,Kaun,Bhooth, D, Shiva and his telugu movies like Gaayam and kshanakshanam!!Freaking legend--commercialized parallel cinema. Pains to see people mock him now. Hopefully he is back!! Satya and Company should be in the best 10 movies made in a india... One of my all time favs...Such an under-rated movie....Sridevi was just brilliant and Paresh Rawal gave a new definition to the comedy villian,so funny and yet so menacing Kaun:I thought could have been brilliant but something was just missing... Company:Good movie but I guess a little over-rated Bhoot and Raatri(Raat in Hindi) were 2 of the best horror films to come out of India
