Ishant has ankle checked; team management says he's fine Amid growing concern over his fitness, India pacer Ishant Sharma is learnt to have got his troublesome ankle checked by a doctor in Canberra on Friday. The Indian camp, though, maintained that there is nothing serious with the pacer, who walked off the field after bowling just 5.3 overs on the opening day of the first practice match against CA Chairman's XI on Thursday, in the run-up to the first Test on December 26. "There is no worry on him. He had some discomfort while bowling and he has seen a doctor. Hopefully, he should be fit before the first Test," said batsman Rohit Sharma, who scored 56 in the drawn match at the Manuka Oval on Friday. So in 24 hours, we have moved from the story of strappings on his ankle had come out and he was to bowl only 6 overs to "he has some discomfort" and a meeting with a specialist. Wouldn't be a surprise if in a couple of days we find him returning home.

if ishant calls himself a finished product then its time to look beyond him. I am usually tolerant of the results Ishant brings cause I believe he is still young and can easily mature to become a better bowler. had a very good tour of the WI which gave me hope. But was poor in england.

Fair point. He is only 23, and that is the main defense for him - that he might improve with age. Otherwise, an average of almost 36 from 41 Tests is really mediocre for a specialist fast bowler - he doesn't add anything to the team with his batting or fielding. He was excellent in the WI (albeit on very helpful pitches) but averaged 48 in SA, 58 in England and 67 against WI at home.

Strike rate of 101 and average of 60 IN Australia. Strike rate of 94 and average of 58 IN England. Strike rate of 79.4 and average of 48 IN South Africa . Strike rate of 70.7 and average of 41 IN New zealand . I think Ishant is intent on terrorizing his own team .
1 tour each. Reminds me of a comment I read in cricinfo about the ashes. Some Oz fan was trash talking with the Poms and mentioning how Cook averages 25-26 in Oz. We all know what he did this time around.

true I think Ishant needs that "moment" in his life where he refines his bowling. For Zaheer Khan who had an average of 35 I believe, was when he had a tour of the English counties in 2007 and found himself. He reduced his average from 35 to 31 we see today over a 4 year period of good performance.

Ishant isn't quite good by global standards but going by what we have had so far, he isnt too bad. Zaheer, after 40 tests had 111 wickets@36, with a bowling avg of 40+ in Aus, India, Pakistan and England. Ishant, being younger, will have time to improve as a bowler. If he doesn't do well in Australia (if he isn't already injured), he will lose his spot for sure. A county stint or a season of domestic cricket with lots of overs bowled, ould then get him back on track . Even if that takes 1-2 year, he would be 25-26 and would have plenty of cricket ahead of him. Lots of IFs there, but we really have to pray he does well in Australia else our bowling will be further setback.

No question he is really good by Indian standards, and like I mentioned, the strongest thing in his favor is his age. Hopefully he does improve with time and as you say, even if that means a year or two in domestic cricket, he can still have a long career for India. But when you consider the promise he showed all those years ago, an average touching 36 is really disappointing.

And to top it all, those ODIs which he shouldn't have played so early in his career. Focusing on Tests alone for first 3-4 years of his career would have been the way to go, like they have done now.

^ Absolutely, these meaningless ODIs are a bane, especially for a bowler like Ishant who is just not suited to the format. Hopefully they learn the lesson with Yadav (who also looks a better Test than ODI bowler) but this being India, I expect them to keep repeating the same mistakes.

@ImIshant Just got my ankle surgery done. Feeling dizzy. Can't wait to get back on field to live the same life of speed again. So he was lying all along to keep a place in the team..moron!!

No..He was not lying. He had said that he can pull Aussie tour without surgery but will undergo surgery after the tour because surgery was inevitable to play long. He did recover from injury by doing strengthening exercises and therapy but it was a short term solution to last Aussie tour which he did. He did not have surgery at that time just for the team's sake, and now he is going to miss IPL. He could easily have had surgery before and play IPL but then people would have still been blaming him for running after IPL.

Before you mouth off, did you consider that he was bowling 145+ consistently in Australia and looked in absolutely no trouble at all, despite there being fears of him being ruled out of the series after the first practice game? Maybe the ankle wasn't troubling him due to the treatment he got done post the WI series. He played in a domestic game recently, felt the pain and decided to go for the surgery. Good decision.

Ishant undergoes ankle surgery, set to miss the IPL More... Ishant undergoes ankle surgery, set to miss the IPL Khurram Habib, Hindustan Times New Delhi, March 26, 2012 26/3/2012 India paceman Ishant Sharma looks set to miss this year's Indian Premier League. The Delhi bowler, who plays for Deccan Chargers, underwent surgery on his troublesome ankle in London a few days ago and will return to India early next month. "His stitches will be removed only on April 2 or 3. It is unlikely he'll turn up for the IPL," sources close to the bowler told HT. The 54-day IPL begins on April 4. Ishant was advised surgery during India's tour of England last year but since doctors advised him that he would require six months to return to action, he postponed the operation to be available for India's tour of Australia. Though he played in all four Tests, Ishant managed to take only five wickets before returning home ahead of the one-day tri-series. In the interim, he was treated by an alternate therapy expert, Jatin Chaudhary, who used laser to dissolve the extra bone growth in his ankle. If Ishant is sidelined for six months, he will not be ready to play until September. According to a tentative schedule, India's next fixture is a bilateral series in Sri Lanka in August, before they feature in the World Twenty20 tournament there in September.

Finally good sense prevailed. Should not have delayed the surgery and gone for it right after the England series. Wish him a speedy recovery and hopefully he will be fit before the domestic season starts.

but then people would have blamed him to miss tours and play in IPL as he might have been fit by the IPL.
