Rookie fast bowler Umesh Yadav has played a big part in India's dominant position in the ongoing second Test against West Indies at Eden Gardens. The strapping lad has match figures of four for 59 with India just seven wickets away from bowling out West Indies for the second time in the match. Former India pacers Subroto Banerjee and Javagal Srinath believe Yadav can only get quicker and will make the most of the conditions on India's upcoming tour Down Under Rookie fast bowler Umesh Yadav has played a big part in India's dominant position in the ongoing second Test against West Indies at Eden Gardens. The strapping lad has match figures of four for 59 with India just seven wickets away from bowling out West Indies for the second time in the match. Though Yadav is playing only his second Test, he was earmarked by bowling coach Eric Simons as a long-term investment when the previous team management headed by Gary Kirsten met at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) after India's early exit in the 2010 Twenty20 World Cup. Yadav travelled to Sri Lanka and South Africa last year as part of the Test squad. In fact, he was taken to Sri Lanka along with Jaidev Unadkat just for experience. He was tipped to make his Test debut at Centurion against South Africa last December when Zaheer Khan broke down. Unadkat, who got the final nod, failed to strike on debut. It was the fourth day of that Test and South Africa were well on their way to a comfortable win. Just as the hosts were preparing for the final rites, Simons (also bowling coach of Yadav's IPL side, Delhi Daredevils) was working diligently with Yadav at the Titans academy in SuperSport Park. Yadav repeatedly landed the ball on the spot prescribed by Simons. Both were oblivious to the fact that a Test was underway, their team getting battered by Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel. Simons, whose dedication has drawn praise, was silently sowing the seeds for the future. Yadav's mentor Subroto Banerjee, the former India swing bowler, felt the new management under coach Duncan Fletcher has an affinity for pace. "It is quite clear that he (Fletcher) is opting for pace (with Varun Aaron also in the Test squad). He has been trying to understand the system. He will interfere only if any major alternation is needed (in Yadav's bowling). Otherwise the management is letting him be ” a very good sign," Vidarbha Cricket Association's (VCA) bowling coach told MiD DAY. "Umesh is still very raw. If he goes to Australia, mark my words, he will clock in excess of 150 kmph and take plenty of wickets. I made my Test debut in Australia (in 1991-92) and played eight years of cricket there (club cricket and for New South Wales). I know the conditions there, and I'm very confident that they will suit Umesh. "He's going to make it very big. I am not exaggerating. He's a very special talent. He has the venom and extra pace. We just have to be very careful in handling him," added Banerjee. Former India fast bowler Javagal Srinath was excited, but not convinced, just yet. "I was very excited with what I saw (yesterday). It's too early though but he's definitely a very bright prospect. He uses his shoulders a lot, but I think the management has been very wise in using him. They must use him diligently," Srinath told MiD DAY. "But he's definitely got genuine pace. He can bowl even quicker," added Srinath. Banerjee said that Yadav would "avoid extra advice" and focus on his bowling. "He's only 23 but knows a lot about fast bowling. There's no problem in taking down crucial points (from coaches), but Yadav is the sort who will only grasp what's important. The one thing I know about him is his goal is to clock over 150 consistently. He won't change that or cut that down even if advised otherwise," Banerjee concluded. http://www.mid-day.com/sports/2011/nov/171111-sports-Umesh-Yadav-has-a-bright-future-say-former-pacers-Banerjee-Srinath.htm

Every expert has so far lauded the way Umesh has been handled by the team. But some ICFers feel MSD is jealous of him, not a fast bowler's captain and doesn't know how to handle pacers in his team.

MSD robbed him of a 5-fer in first innings. He had 3 out top wicket to fall at that time and as he had the opportunity to take a 5-fier only in his second, he was taken off. You cannot keep bowlers in cotton wool. Yes, they need to protect him, but there is nothing better site for a fast bowler than picking up wickets, a 5-fer, and that is the best thing to boost the confidence of a new young fast bowler.

Yaar it is not about trust. I Know they were conserving him but there was an opportunity for him to take some cheap wickets of tailenders, MSD replaced him. In the end wicket matters and 9 (5+4) wickets would look better than 7 (3+4). A bowler who has taken hard earned top order wickets certainly deserves his chance to make ti even better. Most bowlers take have a lot of tail end wickets in their 5-fers and that was a genuine opportunity. How much he had bowled hardly 7 overs.

since when is a captains job to make one of his bwoler look good ? you are conveniently forgetting that we where looking to enforce follow on at that point ..you dont want your pace bowlers drained out knowing the posibillity of them bowling on a trot for next 2 days ...mey be he picked 4 in the second innings cos he was still fresh ?

Whether he should be "protected" or not, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a "major" issue if he is allowed to have a go at the tailenders.. The joy of taking 5-ers is immense and very motivating..Since he bowls good yorkers, it wouldn't be bad if he gets chance to bowl at the tailenders, whenever possible. The innings could end quickly instead of toiling on the field and fielding. Even if you don't bowl, you have to field. It's not that if you are not bowling, you can have a bed rest on the field..

Yaar those were tailenders left, giving 2-3 overs was not a big deal at that time.

Most fast bowlers take tail end wickets to complete their 5-fers 2-3 extra overs do not make much difference or exhaust a bowler.

Yes I noticed this too, I wonder what Dhoni's agenda was or who he was protecting bad review...

Many a times, even Sunil Gavaskar and some foreign commentators find it hard to understand Dhoni's tactics. But, as far as we r winning, nobody criticize him that much

Umesh needs some advice from irfan pathan before going to australia or maybe even from balaji :giggle: On a more serious note, he has been very impressive in test matches for sure!! So let's keep him in the test 11 and allow him to get better and more consistent. As for dhoni's tactics, I would give him the benefit of doubt since he has not really had to manage such a prototype and in light of all the injuries to our bowlers in the recent past, i don't blame him for getting a bit conservative with the quicks.

Wow...his name is UdayKumar Tilak Yadav That tells it. No wonder, Ishant Sharma, RP are all gone. Who is in contention right now - PK, VK, ZK Does that ring the bell??

Umesh Yadav's family are originally from UP, looks like UP ,Bihar, Jharkhand will supply the fast bowlers for India in the future also a shame BCCI talent scouts development wing could'nt identify and nurture that, looks like there was always raw material in these places for us to have fast bowlers, but due to corrupt state associations most talents in these region is wasted, it took us soo long to even bring cricket and get talent from other parts of this country thanks to BCCI.Also with IPL youngsters have a hope that even if they are ignored or selections are not fair at domestic levels they can have some future looking at other unknown players come to the fore, there is so much quota system, nepotism in state associations I hope it gets better.
