Gautam Gambhir seems to be a shadow of his previous self..

The reason it looks rectified is that in ODIs' date=' the line of attack would not be the same as it is in tests. You won't have 3 slips and a gully waiting. If you check his dismissal modes since the Oz series, it's similar to what it was today. Playing away from the body with the head falling over and not covering the movement.[/quote'] Exactly. He keeps playing one-day like shots in tests. Also in ODI's a bowler may not persist with same line. In tests they keep attacking a little wide of off stump and he is their bunny.

That has to be a good thing.

Gambhir basically has had 18 good months in test cricket (from the SL tour in 2008 till the BD tour in early 2010). Outside that his test record is quite ordinary. Early on he had the problem of playing across and getting LBW and now this issue of giving catching practice behind the slips. Not sure if he can survive another failure in this series. Maybe ask him to play a few Ranji matches in cricket when Eng series is on to work on the issues and comeback for the Aus series if he's in good batting form,

He did well against Steyn and Morkel in South Africa. Should start in England series even if he fails in these two Tests which Im sure he won't. Only if he continues failing Rahane should be given a run.

That series was played 20 months ago! Gambhir failed at home vs Aus, NZ, WI and again today. More than the failures, its the repeated mode of dismissals that is the issue which clearly points to a technical problem. His ODI form is keeping him in the side but not sure if that is helping his test batting at all.

I would let them see out the series before making any final conclusions. It was just the first innings. Pujara and Kohli will have given them a little confidence about the strength of their lineup and this will perhaps take some pressure off them and allow them to take their time rather than rushing to play shots.

1 score of <25 and suddenly the knives come out even though gambhir hasnt done well in last 2 test series, but still gambhir has avged 48.22 in the last 2 years in odis performing everywhere and in all conditions - http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/28763.html?class=2;filter=advanced;orderby=start;spanmin1=01+Jun+2010;spanval1=span;template=results;type=allround;view=innings and its only a matter of time before gambhir brings his odi form in tests. this was the 1st time he was batting without dravid & laxman in the xi so he was a bit confused as how to play. now with pujara & kohli giving confidence, gambhir should do well in the 2nd innings & the 2nd test
