Well... sure, cut a thin piece of the side and change the angles and you get different results. A case of fill in the blanks. I'd rather prove everyone else right :)

Next question (inspired by the OP): diagram in the test: South ----------------- North A -----------------> which direction is A heading towards? Student: South Answer explained: * the diagram in the paper doesn't specify clearly that it is done as per the reading from the compass * the student therefore took a compass and placed it on the diagram * the compass needle pointed that the south in the diagram was actually north * based on the reading from the compass, the student concluded that A was actually heading towards north south. the diagram on the paper is inaccurate Reading from student's compass: north ---------------- south A ------------------> Should the teacher give student a 'yeh' or 'nah', is this math/logic fail or an out of the box answer? Or is it that both the teacher and student are right? Discuss

More complications: Teacher infuriated by student's answer, takes him to his office and places his compass on the diagram: The needle this time showed that the north in the diagram is the true north! who is right? is someone's compass malfunctioning? one of the two has to be right To resolve this, they go to the dean's office. The dean being a fair man takes his own compass out and puts it on the diagram. But this time the needle, neither pointed towards south or the north but to a different direction :omg: So instead of the problem getting resolved, it got further complicated :doh: Summery: direction A was heading in diagram on the test: A ---------------------> Diagram on test: south ............................. north reading from student's compass from his examination desk: north .............................. south reading from teacher's compass from his office: south ................................ north reading from dean's compass from dean's office: dirs.gif (could nikred be right abt A going east?) Please help resolve this serious issue :nervous:

The obvious point here is that the base is zero and so the normal mathamateical behaviour does not apply. You can prove any and everything if you have zero as the base on one side of the equation.

How is this a serious issue? If the paper with the diagram is being moved all over the place, why would the directions remain constant? The student is wrong, when the directions are mentioned in the question paper, it is given (i.e, has to be assumed) that its to be taken as the compass direction. I know it was not a serious question

The question does not say that Marie is perfectly ambidextrous and does not say if she has equal power in both hands.. In absence of any specific information, we will have to assume that she is not ambidextrous like most of the world's population. Also, for the two hands theory to work, she has to have two saws of equal size, shape, strength and sharpness. It will work only if: 1. Marie is perfectly ambidextrous - meaning exactly equally skillful in both hands. 2. Marie has perfectly equal strength in both hands. 3. Marie has two saws. 4. Both saws are of equal size 5. Both saws are of equal strength. 6. Both saws have equal sharpness. Every single condition listed above is highly unlikely. Hence It's almost impossible for them all to be true.

In absence of any specific information' date=' we will have to assume that she is not ambidextrous like most of the world's population.[/quote']Given the OP asked for an Out of Box thinking kinda answer I dont see anything wrong with the answer Not necessary...the weaker arm can hold a sharper axe Not necessary as pointed above . . . . and so on.... the point is that we are looking at out of box answers and I'd rather appreciate the thinker's ability to break his psychological inertia than look for right or wrong answers given this question.
