zen Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 I have read not books but absolutely loved the Swedish flim trilogy with the dragon tatoo being one of my fav films of AT Now the english version of the first part (the dragon tatoo) is out .... so let's discuss. Is it as good as the Swedish version or better/worse? I might go and watch it today ......
Nova Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 I have seen the swedish one and it's good. Sometimes Hollywood tends to feck up remakes...but I am going to watch it regardless. Current IMDB rating is 7.4 and the movie is getting good reviews.

Se7en was such a gritty and dark thriller. Fincher definitely was the right choice as a director for the dragon tattoo. It will be interesting to see what magic he has done..

Its not like the film caters to Swedish sensibilities....as long as the remake sticks to the story,it shouldn't be bad. Having said that, I was disappointed with the "Da Vinci Code"..It was true to the book yet dragged
zen Posted December 22, 2011 Author Posted December 22, 2011 Just watched it. I was tired after work but still dragged myself to watch this one, my 3rd film in the last 4 days. The other two being Sherlock Holmes 2 and Mission Impossible 4, both of which I enjoyed. Being a Wednesday, good seats were easier to find. There were quite a few old couples in the audience. May be as you get older you like such films One of the reasons to watch this film was to see what the Hollywood take on this interesting story would be like. My expectations were of a sleeker and stylish version. The opening credit with that nice song told me that the film would be like I had expected. But the movie took some time to kick off, may be I felt it that way as I had already seen the Swedish version. After a while it tends to pick up nicely. The ending is a little different than the original one. Talking about performances, I think Mara did well and that's a big compliment considering how we associate Noomi Rapace with the Lizbeth character. Rapace is still the queen but Mara does a decent job too. I couldn't picture Daniel to fit into Mika's role as I feel Micheal Nyqvist really looked like a journalist. Daniel is just too stylish and macho to look vulnerable at times but he has his own style and screen presence which is like able. Fincher tries to add sleekness to it but the film is too similar to the Swedish version to the point you feel what's the point of making this one. At the end, I had mixed feelings. While I liked this version, it not a big leap from the original. The original had me glued. The evil shown in it horrified me with images flashing in my mind even after the film. The cold display of cruelty was chilling .... Since I have already gone through all 3 Swedish versions, Fincher still did well though to keep my attention so some credit to him. While this one has more style, the original had more substance.

Yoda-esque Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 OK- I just watched the trailor on Youtube..dont think it is as good as the original. - The language seems a little muddled.Neither here nor there..if you know what I mean - Noomi has that edgy look..not so much the one in the Hollywood version
