As unbelievable as it sounds, at one point during day of that test, he did not score a single boundary in an entire session. This time though, we need a Chennai 2008 style blitzkrieg from the man himself if we are going to salvage this. In all probability, we will be chasing a total upwards of 300. Whoever 'they' is, they should probably realize that it is not merely short, it is pretty much non-existent. How you guys can possibly ask India's only batsmen in the last 8 years to not have gone through an extended period of lean form to retire from the game because he had one bad inning is beyond me abilities of comprehension. We would have not have had half the number of memorable wins we have had the past decade, but for VVS batting. We owe him a debt of gratitude that many here cannot even comprehend. And who do you want to bring in his place? The famously reliable Rohit Sharma? Or the renowned test technicians Yuvraj Singh or Suresh Raina? Or maybe it could be the rookie Pujara? Its sad that all it takes for Rohit sharma to be among row of test contenders is a couple of meaningful ODI innings here and there on the one hand, while on the other, VVS is always one innings failure away from his doubts about his test place.

Typically, after a first innings collapse, our batting almost always does well in the 2nd innings. We have seen that repeatedly play over and over in the recent past. However, this phenomenon occurs when the situation is utterly desperate (like if we’re facing a 1st innings deficit of 300+ or we are chasing 550 to win). Our record chasing totals in the last 5 years in test cricket is probably the best among all current test teams. We have chased more tricky 4th innings test totals than most other teams put together [Adelaide 2003, Delhi 2007, Chennai 2008, Lanka 2009, Mohali 2010, TWICE against West Indies this year (even though one was a tie, but to score in excess of 200 runs in the last 2 sessions of day 5 was a remarkable effort)]. So this batting line-up knows what it takes to chase totals on the 4th innings. But whether they can replicate that against this aussie line-up in this pitch is a huge doubt.
