1983-2011 Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 CHENNAI: Chief selector Kris Srikkanth on Saturday said the two consecutive Test defeats in Australia has a lot do with poor batting rather than Mahendra Singh Dhoni's captaincy which has come under sharp criticism. "Our batting didn't click as a unit. It is a bit surprising as we were confident of a good show in Australia. But we must admit that Australia have played better cricket than us. There is no point trying to find excuses and we need to move on," Srikkanth said. Asked about Dhoni's captaincy which has been criticised by former greats like Ian Chappell and Wasim Akram, Srikkanth said it would be unfair to single out his captaincy for the poor performance. "Look, when you lose you can cite any reason. But Dhoni has been honest enough in not giving any excuses. In fact he has rightly admitted that our batting has not clicked, it has clicked only in patches. "This is the best team we have at the moment. Also there are no injuries. I believe each and every member has accepted that Australia is playing better cricket," the former India captain said. When asked to pinpoint the exact problem area, he said the failure of the batsmen to get big scores has played a part in the defeats. "In South Africa, when we drew the Test series, atleast one of our batsmen went on to score a big hundred. Here our batsmen have got to half centuries but didn't get a big score. Test cricket provides you with few opportunities but one needs to grab them when they come your way." Srikkanth felt that India had their moments and should have won the Melbourne Test match. "We were 211 for two and we lost it from there. We had Sehwag, Dravid and Tendulkar playing well but then no one got a big score. When you lose the first Test, automatically, there is a lot of pressure on you. Now one should try and do well in the Perth Test. Sid Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 Please change the kaptaan :protest: We will start winning again once we change the kaptaan.What we need is someone aggrashive to lead us and once we appoint some aggrashive kaptaan,batsmen will automatically start scoring again and our bowlers will suddenly become world class. :regular_smile:
BeautifulGame Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 Well atleast he has the guts to speak the truth for once.Regardless of how everyone looking for excuse to make scapegoat of Dhoni , bowlers Coach and youngsters the real culprits has been the senior batsmen.They have been letting the team in every test for last 9 tests but but getting away from excuse since they are sacred Hope he also has the guilt conscience to resign taking moral responsibility.

However maybe they could have tried out youngsters (batting and bowling) alot more over the years, whereas they seem to be reactive as opposed to proactive e.g. propelling Yadav + Varon after the England fiasco, these guys should have had the foresight..easy to say in hindsight! Going forward, groom a new captain to take over in 12-18 months, at the moment Kohli isnt ready Gambhir if he finds form would be my number one choice. Possibly Sharma if he sets the world alight in 2yrs. Dhoni can concentrate on his batting+keeping, he is the BEST we have and will improve with the captaincy off his shoulders.

We are blaming selectors for not doing anything to enhance the bench strength or blood the youngsters when they had the chance. For example we had 6 Tests against WI and even at home we played "over the hill" batsmen rather than blood batsmen like Rahane and Rohit. Rohit has been in such good form of late but hasn't been given a break. I guess selectors are waiting for him to cool off before playing him :haha: If selection is all about playing the tried and tested anyone can do the job. Hell even a 12 year old can write down the team sheet with Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman, Sehwag, Gambhir, Dhoni, Zaheer etc. in the team. We don't need to pay selectors 25 lakhs for this sort of stuff. The selector's job is to build bench strength and to ensure the team doesn't get impacted a lot in case the seniors retire, i.e. working on transition plan. What has our selectors done? Nothing! And this is what we are pissed about. If selectors had built a decent pool of players when they had the chance we wouldn't be in such a spot we are in right now, i.e. when some of the players in the team are out of form or past their sell-by-date we don't know what to do as our selectors never prepared for that contingency and this blame falls squarely on the selectors headed by Srikkanth.

Tendulkar_Bhai Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 Bhajji can't get into the team. He is appalling. Ashwin and Ojha are proving to be better. Plus I don't think he understands how to be a successful test captain Are they proving to be better? We have seen them do well against a poor Windies batting line up IN INDIA and Ashwin looks ok but nothing special so far in Aus without much assistance from the pitch, but they still need time. If any bowler could be captain is Zak and even he isnt the best option as he will have to be rested in some forms of the game.
