People have a right to protest, provided they do it in a peaceful way and get the prior clearances. Why should anyone be outraged?
Let me say two points why I am, 1) Govt. of India and State govt. decided to sit on the fence here for one of their citizens simply because it appeases their vote base. BJP also would have done the same, maybe for hindu base. But yeah I am outraged. 2) I have seen atleast 2 mullahs on television, threatening a riot like situation if Rushdie comes to India, not to mention the assassination threats against him. Does that qualify as peaceful protest. I am outraged that they are gloating right now. Not to mention the Kangress.

'I have now been informed by intelligence sources in Maharashtra and Rajasthan that paid assassins from the Mumbai underworld may be on their way to Jaipur to "eliminate" me. While I have some doubts about the accuracy of this intelligence, it would be irresponsible of me to come to the Festival in such circumstances; irresponsible to my family, to the festival audience, and to my fellow writers. I will therefore not travel to Jaipur as planned.' Salman Rushdie

Ravish, absolutely agree with your points. Arrest those who threaten a riot like situation, by all means. That however, wasn't my question. My question to Texy was why should anyone be outraged if a group decides to protest. The article he posted doesn't mention anything about creating a riot like situation.

It is quite a blatant attack on Islam. At least that was my reading of it. I think Rushdie had it coming.
I'm noob about Salman rushdie issue .can you point me where to read about it ?

Its kind of amazing, isnt it? Isn't it weird that we worry about freedom of speech for Google and Facebook while we hound our own Rushdie and Hussains??
I support Hussains right to do what ever he wants but we should identify the hypocrisy of this guy and not do equal-equal whenevr we talk about Rushdie or someelse to sound liberal. Hussain did paint nude and offensive paintings of Indian Gods/Goddesses and wouldnt even dare to paint anything Islamic. Imagine these multi million dollar nude paintings hanging on the walls of some rich Paki or Arbi guy whose attitudes about us are nothing short of genocidal. I would have supported Hussain wholeheartedly if he had spoken against the barbaric mullaism and identified the secular, tolerant society of ours which inspite of being poor, illiterate has shown what civilization is to the rest of the world including the blessed GORAS.

And these Congressy games are as old as the country itself.. vote banks should understand that they are cherished, appeased, valued because Hindus dont do Vote Bank politics based on religion. Imagine a day when Hindus vote on a single plank, this same congressis will not think twice to do a 1984 riots or a Gujarat riots. All these psedo secular media, politicians will be as right wing as a Paki politician and do everything to make India a single religion state like Pakistan has become. Heck, even in the best country the world has ever seen, US of A, its a political suicide to be even associated with other religions as GOP candidate John Huntsmen found out.

Husain should only paint what he wants to. No reason to do things that he has no interest in. Oh and you would only support Hussain if he spoke out against mullaism and sang India's praises. Why add pointless caveats to your support of artistic freedom?

Right on. Perhaps the reason why Hussain walked around nange paon, without slippers was also so an Irani, or a Somali, could laugh at Hindus wearing khadaoon in ancient times. http://2.imimg.com/data2/QA/EW/MY-3057798/wooden-paduka-250x250.jpg

Shame on this Government..they will stoop to any level for minority votes. They have no principles. They will sell the country also if it means getting the minority votes Rushdie not coming to his home country is a victory for fundamentalists.. Sir pe bitha rakha hai unko congress ne. Very unforunate

One more thing. I am not following this closely but I hope prominent Muslims come out and support Rushdie.. Just like so many Hindus came to support Hussain artistic freedom. it was all over the news. People should at least stand up against fundamentalists.

I have no sympathy for those who think it's cool to go blasphemous on religions, be it Salman Rushdie or MF Hussain. Freedom of speech cannot be at the expense of freedom of religion. If not, you should be ok with atheists screaming at worshipers outside temples and mosques. Now regarding Rushdie coming home to speak at a function, that is a different matter. He decided not to come due to personal security issues, don't see the big deal.

It's a pretty sad day when we ban books, ban people etc, why don't we ban those Mullah's that spread hate? I thought we were a democracy, I guess when we bow down to these Muslim groups we are showing the world we aren't really a democratic nation. Why is it ok for the hate mongers to make the rest of the country bow down to them?

deathmonger, I agree with you, maybe the people in power should grow some balls and ban those mullah's from Saudi Arabia etc who are in India, preaching their hate, wonder why that does not happen, then we can say all things are equal.

Its like Bollywood heroines going for a premium in the middle-east and Pakistani actress taking on Hindu sounding names... if you know what I mean But again I would have been least bothered if only Hussain had cleared the air by telling India what his stand against artistic freedom was and what he thought of Danish Cartoons and the right of the cartoonist in some distant Scandinavian country.

If you are from where I think you are from, my friend, is there any point in talking about "artistic freedom" when that is the least of the problems of your country There is a context when I said Hussein should have spoken against Mullaism.
