And Kudos to Praveen Swami of The Hindu for exposing behind the scenes manipulation. In my view he is among the very few brilliant journalists left in India who are not sold out or still have sufficient freedom to be a serious journalist.

If you are from where I think you are from, my friend, is there any point in talking about "artistic freedom" when that is the least of the problems of your country There is a context when I said Hussein should have spoken against Mullaism.
Where I am from there is plenty of artistic freedom without any silly restrictions like the one you espouse. But lets not ruin the thread by letting your cluelessness get in the way.

Hussein escaped to a mullah country where he was well protected. Can a hindu painter even entertain the thought of drawing Muhamad and escape to India or Nepal? Not only will he be denied entry/visa plus he will be slaughtered within 48 hrs just like what happened to that Dutch director in broad daylight Update: Rushdie video link has been postponed. He was suppose to appear via video feed to discuss Midnight Children!! Kangress at its best :yay:

People have a right to protest, provided they do it in a peaceful way and get the prior clearances. Why should anyone be outraged?
I don't have a problem with them protesting. They have constitutional right to that but the way government has handled this situation using vote bank politics, preferential treatment and rogue tactics to keep him away is purely disgusting. The security situation was obviously orchestrated to keep Rushdie away and keep the vote bank happy. Artistic freedom should be equally upheld. You can't welcome Hussein with open arms and keep Rushdie and Taslima away. The controversial book was banned in India in the name of communal harmony to appease certain voters, Taslima's Lajja which was also banned in the name of communal harmony

'I have now been informed by intelligence sources in Maharashtra and Rajasthan that paid assassins from the Mumbai underworld may be on their way to Jaipur to "eliminate" me. While I have some doubts about the accuracy of this intelligence' date=' it would be irresponsible of me to come to the Festival in such circumstances; irresponsible to my family, to the festival audience, and to my fellow writers. I will therefore not travel to Jaipur as planned.' Salman Rushdie[/quote']Good at least he is not attempting suicide. Otherwise if the assassins fail then we have to try Rushdie for "attempting suicide"

I grew up reading The Hindu newspaper. Although this post of mine refers in no way to the said journalist, I think The Hindu has been corrupting itself a lot lately. Their liaisons with NDTV and their general pro-govt stance has been appalling of late. However they still come up with some gems of journalistic investigation every now and then. I still have faith in most of their columnists' relative neutrality

Most Indian media houses are anti-national with a price tag for everything. Some are subtle like the Hindu and some are out right like the TOI/NDTV/CNN IBN. But my main interest is Foreign Policy and I think Praveen Swami is sooper brilliant and well read in that respect. Here is the "linkages" email thats doing the rounds these days. Very informative and tells us the behind the scenes motivations of the people in the media and how Indian National Interest is being played around by powerful people influenced by foreign ideologies and monies. for more: Link

I had seen one of these email forwards some time back. They basically linked every media house in India as being under the aegis of the European Church. While some of the things maybe true - like Pranoy Roy being brother-in-law of Prakash Karat, etc, I am not too sure if I want to believe in the main conspiracy theory that all media houses in India are under the aegis of the Church. The thing is, these conspiracy theories seem to suggest that India is still being ruled by the Queen and that the nation of India is legally the property of the Queen of England (who herself has liaisons with the Church and they all belong to the Illuminati crap). I mean seriously? And what even if on paper due to some technicality India is still a property of Queen of England? Can they exercise their right in any way? Will we allow them to exercise her right in anyway? Lot of these conspiracies feed on the fear and cynicism of people to stay alive. N.Ram and many others in Hindu newspaper have been great journalists for donkeys years. They have always come across as well educated, good meaning, sound individuals. If suddenly the Church has invested in The Hindu it dun necessarily mean N Ram is sold out. We will know only when N Ram takes a position that is clearly against his own past positions but in favor of the Church. I have never trusted Times because they have always been a sensationalist media house and it is well known that they are a British group. Indian Express seemed to have good journalistic principles especially during the days of Babri Masjid, and preceding and succeeding those years. But now they are also sensationalist. I dunno much about other media houses though. When it comes to TV - CNN IBN is the worst of them. Times Now at least you expect them to be chethiyas but CNN IBN with Rajdeep Sardesai (he was such a star and had a great image when he started CNN IBN) is a total sell out

Back on to Salman Rushdie....just saw a program on NDTV. I really dunno what is happening but for once after a very very long time I kinda liked Barkha Dutt. She didn't back away from asking tough questions to the Mullah. I do understand that the media has to be neutral and must come across that way. However, in some cases I think the media must take an ethical stance and ask very hard questions of those who are against basic common sense as was the case today.

Shame on the Indian govt. for letting this to happen. They can hold multilateral cricket tournaments WC ’11 and IPL involving several hundreds of foreign players and staff without any problem, but cannot assure security for one individual? It’s a shameful cop-out by the Congress govt. It seems like the prospect of offending certain lunatic mullahs is too much for them, even if it means short-changing freedom of speech and free expression.

Salman Rushdie on CNN-IBN reported the reason for the refusal of his visit & his video link was UP elections and nothing else. This pathetic govt and its blatant vote bank appeasing at its best. Kangress party members can even sell their own mothers if it's required to appease certain voting sections.

The IPL was moved to South Africa in 2009 because most of the players did not want to come here and the Indian govt. said they cannot guarantee security since it was election season. Here, its completely different. Rushdie wanted to come. The central govt. could have stepped in and said they will guarantee Rushdie's safety as long as he was in Indian soil, but they didnt do that.

Its not like some Pope passes decrees that so and so should be printed in this newspaper this Sunday. Its the collective bent of ideology that these individuals profess. All these intellectual elites in high places inspite of being brought up as Hindus will call themselves atheists (I have no problem with this) and when they eat, sleep and drink with people from Abrahamic ideologies (which are inherently dominant) its the Hindu national interest that loses out 10 out of 10 times because our culture is inclusive and doesnt have predefined (how to) doctrines to resist/dominate other ideologies. For Eg: Time and again we hear some American Pastors saying that Yoga is satanic etc. And some people even went ahead and rewrote history (the same kind of self loathing leftist hindu+western religious nuts I quoted along with N Ram) and now Yoga is somehow Eastern Spiritual Tradition and nothing to do with India/Hinduism.They say it because it is their duty to resist even slight encroachment by foreign religions into their spiritual space. I will do the same thing if I were a Christian priest nothing wrong. I have nothing against any religion and I sometimes go to churches when someone invites me in US. My gripe is that with x% of this minority and y% of that minority we have so many problems in India. Problems magnify when some of them deny Hindu ancestry(while others are as patriotic as you & me) and every thing Hindu is to be hated for some reason and want themselves out of Indic sphere. This is a nice discussion topic for another thread for some other time. "Can an Inclusive Indic culture(patriotic moderates from all religions) stand up to dominant foreign ideologies and maintain ideological balance in society for a peaceful future"

I am not defending the Govt. But they are using a tactic that works. Its the people who give these Mullahs and Govt. the power. Certain comunities are vote banks because they select to be vote banks. The very fact that the Govt is using this to get votes tell me that it is a sentiment that will definately give them votes. And unfortunately, on many occasions, it has.
