Who should bat at 7?

That was T20 ' date='dont confuse the formats.Demands of ODI middle order are different from T20 as you yourself know.He definately deserves a try higher up.[/quote'] True but he did look fish out of order up the order. Maybe we can try him up the order but in the longer run he doesn't deserve a spot in the top order so for long term we will still have this dilemma.

Yuvi is a huge loss for us as he could bat at 4 and he could bowl competently as well. For us Yuvi's illness has mean the drop-off from Yuvi to Jadeja in the batting order. Pathan needs to be given a chance in a few games to see what he's capable of.
I would like IKP but guys on here think his batting has regressed. I cannot say as have not seen it in ages. But certainly on seaming decks I see no harm in trying instead of Jaddu. In his last spell in the team he was very capable of teeing off. Dhoni plainly does not rate him though.

1)Sehwag2)Sachin3)Gambhir4)Kohli5)Rohit/Raina6)Dhoni7)Irfan8)Jadeja9)Ashwin 10)Vinay11)Umesh. This would be the lineup against the lankans in the next match. We've to wait & see how Irfan goes in that match coz he can solve that problem. This lineup will give us great depth in the batting too.

In a batting lineup with Sehwag, Gauti, Kohli, Rohit, Raina and MSD in top 6, the situations where we need the number 7 to win us matches by chasing down 8-9 runs an over would be rare. Jadeja since his comeback has bowled brilliantly barring a match or two and has chipped in with useful contributions at number 7. Let him continue there for the time being, if possible let him bat higher in certain situations. he is still evolving as a player and needs to be given time. As of now he has the makings of a good enough all rounder for the ODI side.
Not really. In Aus you expect to lose a couple of wkts to the new ball. Plus Kohli and Gauti are mostly consolidators who build the innings. MSD also needs some time to get in before he starts blazing and ideally should bat at at 4 or 5. We do need power hitters lower down the order to take advantage of powerplay and slog overs or in case we need to chase a high score. Raina is the only power hitter down the order who can tee off from ball 1 and maybe Rohit can also do so. Batting at no. 7 that should be a pre-requisite coz more often than not you will be required to get quick runs either while chasing or setting up a total.

^^No it won't my friend...one of the top 3 must sit out. I don't know why you would want to drop either Rohit or Raina after both have just performed. If anyone should be dropped its Sehwag. Plus we can't afford to weaken our fielding, was a critical factor in our win today.

I would rest Dhoni as well. He looked unfit/sick today and seemed a bit under weather. We can't afford to lose Dhoni for long with Asia Cup round the corner. He should be given a couple of games to recover.

For all his hitting abilities, I can't remember one significant ODI knock that Pathan played to see us home in a run chase batting in the lower order. Most of the times he batted well when he was in the top 5, can't remember many good knocks from him batting 7 or below. The one which comes to mind is the t20 knock vs SL, nothing in the ODIs though. But in general, I do agree with the idea of Pathan being in the side in the CB series. If there is a rotation policy in the top 3, similar policy should be in place for Zak as well.

Plus Viru and Gauti open for Delhi and look good batting together. We need to give them a run together so they can settle down a bit which is not opening with SRT, Viru and Gauti being rotated every game. A team needs a settled top order to do well and we can't have a settled top order if we change our opening combination every game.

A fair enough point bro. I used to really like his batting but a fair few times that was as a pinchhitter in the top order.

In odis I recall his knock against Pak in 2003-04 in the series decider where he came in and clattered Akhtar and Sami around to get us to a good total. But most of the time he was sent up the order and did have a few innings where he scored at run a ball.

How many number 7s going around are power hitters? The only one who fits the bill is a joke of a batsman and bats well perhaps once in a bluemoon. Rest everyone from the likes of Bresnan, Mathews, Parnel, Duplesis, none of them qualifies as a power hitter as such. The ODI team is going well atm, if there is a problem its the inconsistency at the top of the order. The day that gets taken care of, we would not be needing 9-10 runs an over in a chase many times.

Aus have likes of Hussey and Christian who are pretty good SL have Angelo Matthews, Kupagadera and Perera who generally bat at 7 and hit the ball a long ways Pak have Afridi or Razzaq at 7 SA used to have Morkel (Albie) or Boucher and struggle in odis these days to score quicky at the death as they don't have a power hitter anymore NZ have Oram or a hitter at 7 depending on their lineup for the game. Sometimes even McCullum shows up at 7 B'desh/Zim/Eng/WI - Don't really consider them a good odi teams and we don't need to compare against the likes of these The point is we should always try to improve and not be sated. No. 7 spot is something we can improve on and we should rather than see whether other teams have competent no. 7s or not. You never know when you may need your no. 7 to get you out of trouble and that's something the team needs to look at, especially in these days of bowling and batting power-plays as these power-play overs can be the difference between a win or a loss.

Lol' date=' the Balaji smoking Shoaib match B->[/quote'] The same one  The expression on Akhtar's face was priceless :hysterical: IIRC Pathan was quite handy against Paki pacers in the series. If you can get quick runs against Akhtar and Sami at the death you should be able to take on most pacers and score quickly. This is one area Jaddu lags in.

Which is exactly what they are trying to by giving chances to Jadeja at 7 and he has responded well since his comeback. And tbh, more than anything, Jadeja in the side gives us a more than competent 5th bowling option. Given the number of matches we have lost due to our policy of playing only 4 regular bowlers., I am glad with Jaddu in side. We have 5 specialist bowlers thus covering the weaker part of our ODI lineup. His batting too will evolve with time. As I said, he has made some useful contributions already since his comeback and with time will only get better.

I still feel Jaddu is a better batsman than Raina before 35-40 overs. Raina is a T20 specialist , should at no. 6. MSD can bat at no. 7. Or we can Change 5-6-7 this according to situation.

MSD will be wasted at 7. MSD needs time to build his innings before going off against bowlers. It's no coincidence MSD's best innings have come when he came in up the order and I think he should bat at 5 most of the time and promote himself even further up in case we get a great start.
