zen Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Bollywood has presented us with some great films over the years and it is not an easy task to pick one best from each decade but, never the less, I will make an attempt: 1940s: The first decade of the golden age of Bollywood. I don't recall much about films from the 40s. But I would say it is probably Kismat. Honarable mention would be Barsaat and Mahal, which I probably remember watching. Kismat 1950s: This decade had some excellent films to offer like Mother India, Awaara, Do Aankhen Barah Haath, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Madhumati, Sree 420, etc. Mother India, iirc, was nominated as one of the best foreign films at the Oscars. My pick would be Awaara. Awaara 1960s: The last decade of the golden age saw films like Mugal-e-Azam, Sangam, Teesri Manzil, Ganga Jamuna, Phool aur Pathar, Guide, Ram aur Shyam, Upkar and Waqt hit the screens. Mugal-e-Azam would top most people's list. Mugal-e-Azam 1970s: One of the landmark decades of Bollywood. Some great classics were churned out. Dev Anand came up with Jonny Mera Naam, RK hit with Bobby, Dilip Kumar had Gopi and there was Pakejaah. Manoj Kumar, Feroz Khan, Dharmendra, etc all had big hits. But the decade clearly belonged to Amitabh Bachaan and Sholay. Many of the AB's film of 70s could make it to top 20 films of Bollywood, for e.g. Deewar, Maquadar ka Sikander, Don, Amar, Akabar and Anthony, etc. Sholay 1980s: Some star sons made their debut with some big hits. Jeetendra was having fun with white pants-shoes and Aasha. The old stars had some big hits too. Some notable films: Kranti, Beetab, Love Story, Ek Dujhe Ke Liye, Qurbani, Hero, Vidhata, Tezaab, Maine Pyar Kiya, Ram teri Ganga Meli, Karma, Prem Rog, etc. AB continued to give big hits in Naseeb, Laawaris, Mard, Namak Halaal, Sharabi, etc. Kranti was probably the biggest hit of 80s but the film that made the biggest impact was Coolie. Amitabh got injured during the making of this film and kept the whole nation awake with his fight with death. When Coolie hit the screens, it was clear that no one else would play roles like these better: Orc3AZu2IL0 1-q-F8RqhV4 Coolie 1990s: Nothing much to write home in this decade. Probably the worst decade in Bollywood's history. There was Hum Aapke Hai Kaun, the Karan Johar dishes, Govida tricks, Raja Hindustani, etc. Hum Dil De chuke Sanam was pretty good but the decade was truly saved by DDLJ. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge 2000s: A slightly better decade than the 90s with films like 3 Idiots, Munnabhai series, Guru, Lagaan, Chak de India and Rang de Basanti coming out. The film that had me pumped up was Gadar. Who can forget Sunny Deol screaming at the top of his voice in Pakistan! Gadar was also the biggest hit of the decade. Greatest movies with music 1980s (in no order). a) Thodisi Bewafaii Jehaan se tum mod mud gaye the yeh mod ab bhi wahin pade hain... (Efff man...can a better song be written about a breakup?) 0zIMQhIXWeA b) Kudrat Loved every song from it, although for some reason Chodo Sanam Kahe ka ghum has always been my favorite. Will always remember how in a mehendi song a girl sang the following song, would late come to know she actually loved the groom to be *sigh. Truth is stranger than fiction. mDYscKFgg_o Watch this rare song around 4:30. Full marks if you could figure out the heroine(hint - Heer Ranjha) c) Dard Another Khayyam special. Na Jaane kya hua jo tune chu liya...Man kill me and send me back to 1982 :asleep: nxgYiyM6p4w d) Bazaar The only movie Sagar Sarhadi ever made. And what a movie it was too. Great literary works by Mir, Makdhoom and others. Parastish kiya tak ke aie but tujhe sabhon ke nazar mein khuda kar chale.... :hatsoff: zVsIxzMgwVY e) Sanam Teri Kasam The early 80s when RD Burman was fighting to stay relevant. And Kamal hassan was trying hard to get a foothold and the beautiful Reena Roy kept churning hits and never being considered in same breath as Rekha and Hema. E3HJIdZybEY f) Arth So what do you pick? Style or substance? Who does not like the perennial Tu tu hai wahi (Yeh Waada Reha) OR do you go with Arth?? I went with Arth. If only for the fact that any album that has the following needs to make on any list Tere khat aaj main Ganga mein baha aaya hoon Aag jalte huye paani mein laga aaya hoon... K-oUL81qe50 g) Arpan A sleeper, and most likely forgotten. But any guy who has ever had to leave his home for education, career and more...would pine for an ethereal Reena Roy singing Pardes jaake pardesia... hOPjscOcHmM h) Masoom One of the milestones of Hindi cinema in every way. Nothing more to be said, just watch Naseer and listen to Anup Ghosal. o5P6ITVO_SI i) Razia Sultan A classic in every sense. Khayyam special. Even the sultry Jalta hai class has class stamped all over it. The tour de force of course is Aie dil--e-nadaan, perhaps Lata's finest work. z5844VJDg3E j) Mashaal. The days when Yash Chopra still made decent movie. Had some great numbers in this one too, which he always does. This song alongside a few other on the road songs keeps me going on even today. Two things I observed as I compiled the list: a) There are few movies from Amitabh who was a star in those days. The last time I played this song in a group of Indians they were looking at me with a WTF! eyes...Good to see this song is still being appreciated by some. Lovely song of course. This is another in the lost, and now dead, genre of postman/daakiya. So many memorable songs with that theme. Another great lost genre would be the maaajhi/boatman.

(Efff man...can a better song be written about a breakup?) 0zIMQhIXWeA Oh nahi yaar... kia yaad dilaa diaa Luks paee!!! :(( Yaar mera ek dost (even close to be than my brother that time) thaa uski Girlfriend ko yeh gana kafi pasand thaa.. both used to sing the song quite often.They got married (w/o informing boys parents) One day while his wife was cooking her clothes caught fire and while saving her my friend received 60% burn and his wife 80% ... she passed away and my friend was saved ... he later on got into drugs and died of overdose... when he was alive he used to sing the above song in the night... The two lines were real heart breaking : "Jaha se tum moor mur gayee thea , vo moor abb bhi wahi padhee hai .. Hum apne pairoo mei jaane kitne bhawar lapete huee kharee hai ..." Yaar yeh gaana jaab bhi sunta hoon unn dono ke bhut yaad aati hai :((:(( He was a very good powerlifter in the gym and we used to workout together..
