Agreed. SPB is a great talent of India but murdered most of his Hindi songs. He along with Mohammed Aziz and Shabbir Kumar in 80s and early 90s were big reason for demise of Hindi songs as we know it. On the other hand look at Yesudas and his grasp on Hindi and Urdu along with heavenly voice. :hatsoff:

I can understand how one who understands and values poetry would feel if the words are not pronounced accurately. Some singers pay great attention to pronunciation and diction and take special classes and put effort not to be wrong. Many singers demand the lyricist to be present in the recording so that he can point out any mistakes in the recording itself. And it's a misconception that one has to know the language very well to be able to pronounce the words perfectly. Good training in phonetics should make it better in almost any language. I am a huge fan Mana De and love Laga Chunri Mein Daag. But I still feel the pain when he goes "Jaake babul se najre milao kaise..." SP Balasubramaniam is a good singer for me, not great. He has a freshness to his voice, which can be very pleasant in light songs.

True . Music has no language. Asha Bhosle, Lata both have sun couple of songs in Tamil. Terrible pronunciation. One would have hated them. But Sadhana Sargam gets it mostly right in Tamil. Infact she was nominated for best singer award in Tamil once. Shrey Ghosal is also good despite not knowing Tamil. In the following song both singers don't know Tamil if i am right. Great post. There are always one-offs in a singer's career though DK. And I would perhaps give the benefit of the doubt to Manna Dey in Laga Chunri mein Daag. The other day I was listening to Dhoom Mache Dhoom aaj ki raina from Kaala Pathar, and if you listen subtly you will see how easily Mohd Rafi wafts into the gaaon-waala style of Hindi versus Lata. Lata Mangeshkar who is awesome in songs of any kind comes second best in that, purely based on lingo. Back to SPB and his accent, have a listen to the Tumko jo dekhte hi pyaar hua from Pathar ke Phool. The song list streets of Bombay and see how many names can you pick right in the first listening. PS: Trivia here, that song Tumko jo dekhte hi pyaar hua, was written by Dawood Ibrahim's gangster brother Noora.

There is another song of his in 100 Days where Jackie Shroff comes in a boat. I forget it now but that was a rage back then. SPB was not a total disaster but his accent was retarded yes.

SPB's so called butchering of the Hindi language is not even a patch on what Kumar Sany,Udit Narayan do to Telugu. Atleast SPB has an understanding of the language and tries to bring emotion in his vocals but listeming to Udit and Snu just sleep walk their way through south Indian songs is a bigger crime.

And yes this whole thread is about how Udit Narayan has butchered Souther songs? Dude this thread is about SPB songs, a few folks dont appreciate his accent of Hindi...which seems perfectly fair (to me). Looks like some of you are extra-sensitive about everything. Maybe I should reply with how Hemlata has butchered Bhojpuri songs now???? :giggle:

That's deliberate to give a rustic UP accent and touch. LOL at people getting touchy about SP's terrible accent and bringing in Sanu and Udit Narayan into the discussion. Not sure how the two things are related, but someone like Sanu should not have been allowed to sing even Hindi songs with his nasal rendition of a poor man's Kishore Kumar. And yes, Hariharan and ghazals in the same sentence is a joke. I am sorry if I consider the likes of Ghulam Ali and Mehdi Hassan as my benchmarks for ghazal singers.

^^ Hariharan has some good Hindi movie songs though Shwetabh. He was pretty good in Mere Dushman mere Bhai (Border). Kabhi Main Kahoon (Lamhe), Chor aaye hum wo galiyaan (Maachis) and a few other comes to mind immediately. Then there is Tu hi Tu hi re (Bombay). Love the song, although it is one of those rare songs that I prefer visuals than the lyrics. And by the visuals I mean Manisha Koirala running of course ;-)
