Cook ready for India challenge

"It has been a difficult two months for us as an England side but for me as a captain the best possible outcome has happened," Cook said. "We have got a world-class player back in our team. It has been a tough couple of months for Kevin but he seems very contrite. He is desperate to be back playing, doing what he does best - scoring runs for England. As a captain that is what all I want. I want him to come back into the side as he was to score match-winning runs like he did in Colombo, like he did at Headingley. I am sure he will be desperately keen to do that. As a captain I wanted our best players in the team because that is how we know we can get the best results." Cook was also not that concerned that the absence of any specialist spinner in the first warm-up game against India A was a smart trick by the Indians to protect their trump card. "What happened in UAE against Pakistan highlighted exactly where were at: we did struggle there. But I thought the improvements were made in Colombo and Galle. To draw a Test series out there was a really good achievement. It is important how we train against spin and how we start." England last won a series in India in 1985. The last time they won a Test match was when then-captain, Andrew Flintoff, played the role of DJ-cum-captain in Mumbai. Cook did not play that match. He will be desperate to play a leading role this time around; importantly he will need all hands on the deck. "We have a real, tough challenge ahead of us as a side," Cook said. "It has been almost 30 years since we won in India so that shows the challenge ahead but I am very confident in this squad that we can go out there and do something special."
Who will be Cook's deputy?
"We haven't made anything official yet," Cook said. "I would like to have a vice-captain because it is important everyone is very clear when the captain is not on the field who takes over. It was the case when I was made the vice-captain and I hoped to carry on the tradition." Cook said Stuart Broad, who is England's captain in the Twenty20 format, was a favourite but is among a bunch of senior players who could lay claim to the position. "We have got a good number of senior players as well," he said. "That is what is quite exciting about this squad is we seem to have a lot of senior players who have played 60, 70, 80 Test matches but then there are also a crop of players who have not played much at all. Having a balanced squad like that is a good place to start."
Who will open with Cook?
Cook said the position of his partner was "still up for grabs" and did not rule out any of the prospective names from the touring party, including the uncapped Joe Root and Nick Compton, or promoting Jonathan Trott to open. Six years ago Cook was plucked from the Caribbean and dashed to a baking hot pitch in Nagpur and he responded with a half-century followed by a century on debut in the second innings, so he is in the best position to advise the pair of Compton and Root. "All I will say is make sure enjoy the moment," Cook said. "Don't worry too much about the result. Concentrate on what you have done to get selected in the first place - it is the same red ball coming down at you. These two guys have earned their selection in two different ways. I am sure they are desperate to get out there."

India A v England XI warm up tie : Sorry Alastair, no favours When Sandeep Patil & Co declared the India ‘A’ squad to take on England in Mumbai (from October 30), they probably conveyed something. Selection will be merit based. More... Sorry Alastair, no favours Published: Thursday, Oct 25, 2012, 8:00 IST By DNA Correspondent | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA The first squad from a new selection panel is awaited with much anticipation. You are eager to know the committee’s roadmap. But having vision is one thing, showing intent is another. When Sandeep Patil & Co declared the India ‘A’ squad to take on England in Mumbai (from October 30), they probably conveyed something. Selection will be merit based. So Yuvraj Singh, Robin Bist, M Vijay and Ashok Dinda’s domestic form has been rewarded. Ashok Menaria and Ambati Rayudu’s (the latter was included after Shikhar Dhawan opted out on account of his wedding)consistency in the ‘A’ tour of New Zealand hasn’t gone unnoticed either. And Ajinkya Rahane and Manoj Tiwary have been compensated for their long wait at the wings. Rohit Sharma doesn’t feature on the list. For Sharma, the message is loud: how your skill sets are perceived does not matter. Score big and return. It has created another window of opportunity for Yuvraj to break into the Test team. Only last week, hestruck a double ton in Duleep Trophy to suggest that form and fitness might not elude him in the longer version. A big knock in Mumbai and he could pose a serious threat to the two contenders at No 6: Suresh Raina, who will lead the side, and S Badrinath. Badrinath, who was part of the Test squad in the home series against New Zealand, doesn’t find mention here. Perhaps, it is thought that Tamil Nadu’s Mr Consistency needn’t have to prove himself in a tour game anymore. It’s no surprise that the selectors haven’t included a single specialist spinner, although Yuvraj, Tiwary and Raina can serve as efficient part-time tweakers. The idea, obviously, is to deprive the Englishmen practice against quality spin. After all, how often have India groused that they seldom get genuine quicks at nets on overseas tours. It would be interesting to see how England react. Will they instruct James Anderson & Co to give a tempered performance? While tour games provide useful pointers, captains prefer keeping their cards close the chest. Over to the Englishmen. India ‘A squad: Suresh Raina (capt), Ambati Rayudu, M Vijay, Abhinav Mukund, Manoj Tiwary, Robin Bist, Ashok Menaria, Yuvraj Singh, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Irfan Pathan, Ashok Dinda, Vinay Kumar, Parvinder Awana Coach: Lalchand Rajput

Indian tactics not in spirit of the game: Michael Vaughan

New Delhi: Former England captain Michael Vaughan has lashed out at the Indian cricket teamÃÔ decision to not field a single specialist spinner in its squad for the practice game against the visiting side beginning from October 30 in Mumbai. The three-day practice match marks the beginning of a three-month long tour that will see England playing four Tests, five ODIs and tow T20I against India. Following the announcement of the India A squad Vaughan tweeted: Ūndia to play no spinners against England in the A team warm-up game if thatÃÔ what the game has come to???? Pathetic tactics. Vaughan went on to say that the tactic is not in the spirit of the game and will set a new precedence for the future. Ū donÃÕ think its (sic) in the Spirit of game. Prepare wickets which suit your team (spinning tracks) that should be enough Poor form!!! ŪndiaÃÔ tactics are terrible for the game ItÃÔ taking home advantage to a new level Other teams might follow, he wrote on Twitter. Former England cricketer David Llyod also criticised the decision joining his countryman to vent his ire on the micro blogging site. ůo spinner in India A team vs England....totally lacking in class and style decision, he tweeted. The squad, announced by the new selection panel headed by Sandeep Patil, features Irfan Pathan, Vinay Kumar, Parwinder Awana, Ashok Dinda all medium pacers. This means that the duties of a spinner will be borne by the part-timers.

Yeah county sides vs toruing teams in Eng are always 2nd string...Indian BP XI teams vs Touring teams are normally good. anyway not playing a spinner at all is taking it a whole new level. And I ont think we should overstate its importance, Eng did manage a draw in SL.

English have already started whining. Expect more about DRS' date=' BCCI, dust bowls, hot weather, Pietersen in the coming months. :hysterical:[/quote'] Agreed. And it's gonna affect performance. Rather than "they seem a bit worried by us" it's "they're not giving us proper warmup" :whine: Poor mental approach to mind games. Rather than it backfiring on India it will help India.

Yes. But, they are here a good 1 month before the 1st test. That's a hell of a lot of time needed for acclimatization.

Let me remind everyone what happened in July 2011 during India's tour of England before the first Test at Lord's. Monty Panesar bowled to Sachin Tendulkar in the nets and here is what Andy Flower had to say

“He did bowl to him in the nets before Lord’s and I think that it is quite a naïve thing to do,” Flower said on, following his team’s 196-run victory over India the previous evening. “I haven’t spoken to him yet but one would hope he understands that it won’t happen again.”
