Her biological mother, who is in the women's general ward does not see her, or feed her. She remains un-named. She was born a healthy baby. Her shortcoming is that she is not a boy. When Poonam Kanwar delivered her child at Jodhpur's Umaid Hospital, mid-wives reportedly eager for a tip said, she had given birth to a son. They brought her a baby boy to hold in her arms, and collected their reward. Then the news was broken two hours later to Poonam and her family that the boy they had embraced was actually born to another woman in the same hospital. Now, Poonam says she wants a DNA test to confirm who the baby boy belongs to. That could take four weeks, say authorities. On the basis of a blood test, hospital authorities claim Poonam is the baby girl's mother. Poonam already has a son. Like Reshma Devi, the boy's biological mother, she comes from a rather modest family of farmers in Barmer district. Reshma Devi has already left the hospital with her son and is taking full care of him. "It's the fault of the hospital staff which has caused all this confusion," says Poonam Devi's husband, Chain Singh. Doctors say that they cannot allow the abandoned girl to be fed by Poonam Devi till she accepts this is her child - the family says they will not allow this till they get the results of the DNA test. Given the insensitivity and negligence of hospital staff, the Rajasthan Women's Commission has intervened. "This case smacks of a feudal mindset that discriminates against the girl child. Also it's the negligence of the hospital staff that has created this confusion and caused so much suffering to this little girl. So the mother is willing to nurse the girl also? In that case i will only blame the hospital

I mean it is common sense to do DNA test and confirm the actual parents , but for god's sake , handover the child for mother's care!
Needforspeed Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Irrespective of whose child the girl is, at least one of the women should breast feed her till the DNA test results come. This is inhuman. Regarding the girl child mentality, I think this is more prevalent in North India.In Kerala I have seen no discrimination against the girl child...In fact inspite of the high dowry levels, i have seem many malayalees prefer girls. I know at least 3 childless couples who adopted girls.

I fail to see a case of gender discrimination from the parents here. It's a pure confusion and they don't know which one is their child, thanks to the insensitive prank by the hospital staff. They were first shown one baby and were given another one later and considering 1. the frequent cases of child swapping in hospitals these days and 2. the high demand for a male child in that part of India, it's only natural that the parents are being cautious. I can't blame them if they believe that the first baby they were showed, which was a boy, was their real baby that was sold to some other couple that did not want a girl. If it's a government hospital, it's time to sue their sorry backside for a fortune regardless of which is their real baby.

There was a case of a woman who refused to accept a girl because she couldn't face her family. Man beats wife to force abortion A 30- year old housewife in the weaving town of Tenali in Guntur district is battling for life after she was brutally beaten up by her husband and in-laws in order to make her abort for the third consecutive time as she was carrying a girl child. Police circle inspector Shaikh Usman said that the husband and in-laws of the victim, Munni , a resident of Balajipeta in Tenali town believed that she was pregnant with a girl child as a local Baba had predicted that only the 7th child in her womb will be a male. Husband hence allegedly beat up his wife that lead to miscarriage. This was victim's sixth pregnancy and his husband and in-laws made her abort again and again because they didn't want the girl child. As no local doctor was willing to abort the child for the third time due to her health condition, the family decided to do it themselves. Husband Allabaksh, father-in-law Rahman and mother-in-law Fathima tied her to a pole and beat her on the stomach under the impression it would lead to abortion. The neighbours saw her bleeding profusely and took her to the government hospital. The incident came to light on Sunday after she was admitted to a private hospital at Mangalgiri following complications. Police said that based on the complaint of the victim, the three accused had been arrested. Later they were produced in the local court and sent to jail. Andhra Pradesh assembly speaker N. Manohar visited the hospital and asked the doctors to provide all necessary medicare to save her life. The district collector V N Vishnu has ordered a probe into the incident. DomainK Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 ^ Unfortunately, what you are saying is very true. The demand for a male child is tremendous. Even in parts of India where there is no serious discrimination between males and females, couples do hope for a male child than a female one. I think the couples who go to hospitals for delivery (which is actually advisable), should all go for DNA testing just to ensure that they were not cheated or a baby was not swapped by accident. It's so frequent these days, it's scary.

I had my daughter in a military hospital.It was a Cesarean operation and they had given me epidural so I was conscious though out.When they pulled her out ,the doctor and the staff kept delaying telling me the sex of the child. Finally when I kept insisting the doctor told me. Later on the doctor told me that they avoid telling the sex during the procedure because some women go into shock on hearing about a girl child.
Texy Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 ^^^ even more shocking that this mindset is quite common amongst the educated middle class...even at this day and age, a daughter is seen as a burden as oppose to a male child despite the fact that the daughters are taking care of the retired parents ever more than before

In Countries like India where govt could hardly provide you any old age security you don't have any other option apart from looking to children in old age so it is natural for people to see children as investment

I was like WTF... one thing i have noticed is these expectations are mostly from older generation.. After couple of generation i expect this bias to go away.

Human nature itself is very selfish.Infact selfishness itself is necessary for survival.Just think for a moment if the society take away responsibility of caring elders from children then how many people will want children? A very large percentage of population will keep saving their money for old age rather than having children.Just look at many developed countries where birth rate is extremely low.One of the main reason people say for not having children is they can't afford them ,so in countries like India with per capita income of 1500$ people can afford children but in countries like Germany where per capita income is 45000$ people can't afford them.
