Lord Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 first' date=' you are underestimating the mental capacity of a kid. A kid is always willing to learn and will understand the difference between right and wrong once you explain it to him. But of course a parents should have the knack of making them understand and take lots of time and patience for that. But thats a parents job[/quote'] not all kids r the same.some dont hv the capacity to understand no matter what parents do.though I agree hitting 5 yr old is wrong, but if it prevents him doing something wrong, then nothing wrong with it.It really depends on the child,if they r able n ready to understand, good but if not than there is nothing wrong in stopping them by hitting them before its too late wen I said I wouldnt hv listened to them,I didnt mean I was headstrong,I just loved to that wrong thing that it wouldnt hv worked, they tried IIRC.the same intelligence of children works against them as they learn things from friends etc that are contradictory.parents cant follow them everywhere if a child steals if he thinks his parents wont find out, then he doesnt respect them n its a different thing altogether.children's mind is fickle.you might tell them stealing is wrong n he may learn it but if he sees his friends hv something attractive that he doesnt he is bound to be tempted to have it n may try stealing even if he knows its wrong unless he fears his parents scolding.sometimes instilling fear is necessary
PriyankaSR Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 No. Hitting the child will not make him/her change their attitude. It will just make them develop certain unwanted feelings. I believe that there always is a way to explain things without violence.(Please note that I am only referring to domestic violence , hitting the child etc.) In certain extreme situations a slap or two MAY be necessary but hitting the child with a belt or a shoe or some **** like that, is no solution whatsoever.
Texy Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 White parents are the WORST when it comes to disciplining their kids. My & my friend Brian would hang out after HS at his house...playing games, smoking ganja, checking out the playboy spread n what not (regular hs kid stuff) Brian's mom(from downstairs): BRIAN!!! you were suppose to unload the dishes from the dishwasher!! and put the chicken in the oven so it gets done by the time I come back from work!!! Brian: I don't careeeeeeeeeeee Moooaaam...leave me the f**k alone!!! (murmuring under breadth) jeez what a pain in the @.s.s. Brian's mom: Don't swear young man...I swear to God I will take you to Sunday school and Pastor Joseph will teach you some manners Brian: I don'tttt give a rat's @.s..s. that old man can kiss my @.s.s. Brian's mom: (deep sigh) what will I do with this child ...(walks away...does the chores herself) ME: holy sh1t dude..you talk to ur mom like that? Brian: YA...so? she's a pain in the butt If I did the same thing to my mom...she would the slap the taj mahal out of me
beetle Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 This brian chap needs his head put in the pot and flushed.
beetle Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Almost everyone of us were hit as chilldren by parents. How many of us think we were physically abused and carry the scars of the hitting now? I don't .I remember some of the times I was hit but don't remember them as hurts but more in amusement. Here I mean only the normal beating we got for doing something wrong and not the serious beating some children got which cannot be classified as normal. When did times change? I remember when I was in class6-7.Our sports teacher would makes us run around the ground as punishment or we could opt to be hit on the knuckles with a wooden duster. Most of us opted for the knukle busters...atleast I did. I am not justifying any of this ....just wondering when things changed. I would never accept any one hitting my baby in school ....ever. Our parents never thought it was out of place for our teachers to hit.

Crookbond Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 [1] I was hit and is wasn't mentally scarring [2] Hitting or not also depends on cultural aspects viz. if the kids friends in the society are also hit it makes the situation simpler [3] I personally don't advocate hitting [4] I think it's the fear of getting hit without actually hitting which matters
bihutoli Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Its baffling that people try and draw a cause effect relationship between hitting and discipline especially here in India. Generations of us have not been averse to applying the stick on children and yet we remain as corrupt, indisciplined, lacking work ethics etc as ever as a nation. Its probably boils down to a need to justify our parent's behavior.
Sachinism Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 I think one slap once, just to let them know it can happen if they **** about again. Don't have issues if its just a slap or something, but it shouldn't be any more than that. Then its the fear that should keep em at bay. But again it depends on the child, some don't learn. Main thing should be to help them differentiate between right and wrong, show them how their actions affect others. Promote Golden Rule.

Vijay.Sharma Posted May 26, 2012 Posted May 26, 2012 Still waiting for one good example where hitting a child solved the problem in the long term :aha:I am reminded of this story of Naseeruddin Hodja although it worked in the short term. Naseeruddin Hodja asks a boy to fetch some water and gives him a mud pot. Just as the boy was leaving, he gives him a tight slap and sez "Don't break the pot otherwise I'll hit you again". An onlooker notices the scene and asks Hodja why he hit the poor kid when he didn't do anything wrong. So Hodja replies, "it would be pointless to beat him if he has already broken the pot"
